Back in 1983, they had to chose whether this song or Such a Shame to be released as a single. I doubt The Last Time would have had much success as Such a Shame, but It's still a great track.
Talk Talk is one of the most underrated bands of the 80s. They were more than the band that made "Its my Life", they had such creativity, heart and soul in their music and Mark Hollis is such a gifted songwriter. Talk Talk, along with Depeche Mode and New Order, are one of the best synth-pop bands ever.
Such a sad song.... Gripes me to the heart every time. The album It's My Life is definitely one of the ten albums I'd take with me on a desert island, unless it would be Colour of Spring...
Along with Simple Minds, Talk Talk made the best synth pop of the 80's. This album still haunts me, though not nearly as brooding as their later work. Colour of Spring is one of the best albums ever made.
I was 20 when this album was released. It really opened my eyes to just how much I could identify with a certain sound. TALK TALK is, in my opinion, is the epitome of this genre.
why do people always say things like "what an amazing album after all these years?" as if its gna get less better as time goes on..if anything itl only get better, just listen to all the shit we're subjected to today...todays music is not even rly music, its really a cheap form of entertainment catered to our obvious youth. Note to you kids today, this here is what you call talent, and a good band..the closest you'll ever get to that is the internet ..which is also why you suck.
I always wonder what inspired James Marsh to create these exceptional works of art?Unlike most album covers talk, talk were unique and creative.Every album cover showcase something different.
Fuck, just... fuck. The way he sings it: "These eyes are dreaming.... for the last time...." Still moves me to tears even after all this time... no-one and nothing affects me like his voice....
very few songs have an aura about them but this one does. when faced with dozens of TT songs on a play list furing me work day this one has the foot tapping on the floor uncontrollably especially at work with the headphones on
time its time has a melodramatic place in my heart but the last time has my heart pounding, my foot stomping and my co workers wondering WTF is going on!
Who said synth-pop can't be soulful? Such an exquisitely simple & straightforward sounding, yet superbly indistinct, melancholic line: Let the show begin... for the last time...
And that pervading sense of yearning and dissatisfaction... one by one, every courtesy is gone... writing like that is beyond compare. This man truly is a genius in every sense of the word. To think this was only on their second album!
You know, as I review my comments on the various Talk Talk songs on YouTube, I realize I've probably called at least a half dozen of them my "favorite" song - I hope people don't discount my words, and instead recognize that my enthusiasm is a testament to the incredible body of work Mark has left us.
Re stillinthe80s: Dont worry. I feel exactly the same way. I call them all my favourites because I cannot put them in order. I love this just as much as" Does Caroline Know","Such A Shame","Dum Dum Girl",Its My Life" etc etc...
Song 1A in my list of favorites (with Happiness is Easy as 1B). Someday, possibly, the world will realize these undiscovered jewels. If not, F*** them, and let's just thank Mark Hollis and the boys for their gifts to us.
Is it funny that I despise It's My Life yet love everything else by Talk Talk?

@pathogensmusick Couldn't agree more. I'm a HUGE Simple Minds fan but I think you also have to include New Order as well.
