  • yeah... phil had it set up for his kids.... on another note how many people were freaking the fuck out because they thought they were hallucinating this?

  • In Phil's book he said that he was playing behind the stack and Jerry did not know where the sound was coming from. Jerry was very surprised according to Phil's book. 1993 was the start of Jerry starting to look bad and aging rapidly. He also just keeps his head down looking at his guitar most of the time and doesn't have the usual enthusiasm for Iko Iko.

  • Stolen boognishes are no joke.

  • the Dead got a letter from the Barney people telling them not to do that any more - what dicks...

  • I was there in the seats behind the stage and i could see Phil behind the speakers jammin' and laughin' his face off !

  • i had so many arguments about who was in the barney suit. I had binoculars and could tell right away it wasn't Phil, but trying to get others to realize it was an effort in futility.

  • saw the full albany shows before this nassau run......great times!!!!

  • Yea, this is me in the costume, not Phil. I was asked by an entertainment company in NJ to do this for John Scher, Metropolitan Productions. I had a friend drive me out to Nassau Coliseum on the back of an old motorcycle from NJ with the dinosaur costume in a black glad bag. I complained when I took the dinosaur costume out of the bag because I thought “Barney” was Fred Flintstone’s side kick, not a dinosaur.

  • @FloodlightStudio was phil playing of stage? i can hear bass and im sure it wasnt you. barney!

  • @TheClassicMusicMan Yes, Phil was playing a small platform before the stairs....

  • @FloodlightStudio If you had the Privalage to hold his bass, What was he playing!

  • @TheClassicMusicMan -All white bass with wireless connection....

  • @FloodlightStudio Why were you Playing Slap Bass" on It? Phil would never Play Slap, Its how i knew it wasnt him

  • @TheClassicMusicMan I only had a thumb to work with......

  • Anyway, I had strict instructions not to go on stage because the dinosaur costume was not an officially licensed product. I was only supposed to entertain Phil’s kids backstage. When Phil asked me to go on stage in his place I immediately said yes. I pretended I was adjusting the bass stack during the performance, but it was Bobby’s stuff. I was able to meet the band and crew. I discarded all my rock and roll memorabilia when I later received a scholarship for Bible College. I’m 42 now.

  • I was at this show, very cool. The night before I met Jerry, Bob and Billy in NYC. I went to see Tommy on Broadway and while at the bar Bob walks in then 5 minutes later here comes Jerry 5 feet away from me, I got to buy Bob and Jerry a drink, one of the highlights of my years following the band.

  • What do you mean "costume"? That's the real Barney!

  • How many people did this freak out!?!?......Awesome!!

  • My 40th birthday!

  • lol takes jer a while to relize barney is on stage lol

  • awwww i love how phills kids were on stage at this show

  • Phil was behind the amps with his kid payin his bass

  • I was there too!!! Yeah!

  • @jjquentin me too

  • i was at this show!!the kids dancing was awsome!

  • Yes... good times indeed. Actually I just found some old negatives that I shot that night and it really brought a smile to my face. I remember the buzz that night was whether it was Phil in the suit or someone else. I believe that Phil was playing behind his stack and it was someone else in the costume. Anyone know who it was???

  • This was awesome. Good times. 93 is one of my favorite years.

  • The hilarious thing is that this was really my first introduction to the Dead. I was 3 when they did this, and a bigger fan of the Barney there was not lol. Little did i realize i would go from woirshiping a green and purple dinosaur to green and purple bears :P

  • I was there, too. The same age. It is weird seeing this again as I still remember it!

  • i love you, you love me, we love smoking lots of trees

  • I was at this show!

  • PHIL IS NUTZ

  • hahaha yes, this is seriously awesome

  • Talking about April foolss....a few years before this ...when the Dead started playing the first song.. Jet....low and behold....they were all playing different instruments....

  • As long as Mickey wasn't on guitar. I've seen and heard that and it was painful.

Purple f**king dinosaur. Phil is loopy.

  • OMG! So it was real..... I was at this show, on the left hand of the stage...... I was was.....well....you know...... thought i was seeing things....

I remember those group of kids flipping out that Barney was there.....

  • this is the day before i was born and i loved barney and i love the dead

  • I was at this show,,,well kinnda,,drove from URI Got stuck in Trafic 2 friends had tickets 3 didnt and we were so late no miracles for the 3 of us. After show we heard about Barney .

  • Phil was behind the speakers playing for real. A complete suprise to Jerry and Co. according to what I read.

  • why doesn't barney play like this on his show?

  • Read this entire thread it is not Phil!

  • @jcouncil317 do you really think this sounds like rolling thunder?? you are a shameful dead head

  • @jcouncil31 barney plays good. but no one has the massive philzone inducing bombs that only phil can do

  • Isn't that phil in the suit? haha I cant see him on stage and Barney is playing a bass

  • nah barney is miming along and phil is hiding behind the amps playing

its in the book searching for the sound

also barney's owner sent them a ease and desist letter

  • Anyone else notice certain similarities between jerry and barney?

  • Purpule walrus with tusks

  • lighten up brother

  • that dudes a fag he can suck a dick!long live the dead!

  • how dare you desecrate the memory of Jerry! Good riddance...glad you are no longer "with" the Dead!

  • Jerry had nothing but love in his heart. It's because of people like you, people with hate in their hearts, that this world has gone to hell. Also, people who use the "f" word use it only because they are ignorant of the english language.

  • So Jerry Garcia was ignorant of the English language????? I mean you are the most righteous person in this forum I'm sure seeing that your a bigger fan of Jerry than he was of himself, but are you actually dumb enough to believe Jerry didn't use the word FUCK????

  • o.k....I am not the only one that sees a purple dinosur on stage right?

  • ...Purple dinosaur?

  • That show was so cool. The barney really freaked me out. wasn't quite sure if it was real or not. Quite the trip those Nassau shows were right after the Albuny run

  • thanks for posting this! I was at this show...brought back a pile of great memories!thanx

  • it's not les claypool in phil's book he says who it is, i think it is just a barney impersonator with phil on bass behind the amp

  • i can almost bet it was les claypool i was at this one too

  • great show i was there

phil had his kid on stage w ballons

    rock on thanks

    joel

  • was at this show too and wasn't sure if i had too much "bart simpson"....but that was barney after all : )

(also went the next night when they played "rain" by the beatles as encore and came outside and it was pouring out!!!) grat shows

  • that rain jam: samba in the rain> beatle rain>LL Rain>Cold Rain(?) not sure of the correct order, but I was there it was @ 3 Rivers Stadium,PITTS.,PA.1995 GRATE SHOW, HUH?

It was my favorite ever because i'm from PA. and I love the Steelers & Pirates!

Hated that stadium, so glad to watch get blown up....most boring, vanilla place to see a game or show! New PNC Park @ Heinz Field bigtime upgrades. I luv em both.. Anybody passin through the 'burg should check the 2 places out...beautiful!

  • fabulous to see this again...i was at this show and just thought to search for it on a weird random thought out of the blue. lol thanks for posting, peace kozzz

  • Jerry probably thought he was having a flashback. lol

  • I know that may sound terrible, but Jerry was seriously into the self-pleasure evils of heroin... it was, unfortunately his undoing. Rest in Peace Jer.

  • its not that evil, just unhealthy. He really wasn't hurting anyone. With that logic you could say it was evil that he didnt excersize a whole lot or ate a lot of unhealthy food or got sleep apnea

  • Comment removed

  • When somebody is doing heroin, they are hurting everyone in contact with them. Jerry's music was the reason for so much happiness in my life, so I am thankful for that, but lets not fool ourselves about the evils of a self-absorbing drug like heroin.

  • I think its a personal choice he made. I really dont think he meant any "evil" by it the other members of the band loved him and Im pretty sure all the deadheads forgave him and so did everyone close to him

  • I think you are missing the point. Garcia certainly did not mean any evil - I am just pointing out that after heroin had a hold on him, he did not make the choices any more, the drug did, that is the evil part. Phil Lesh even said that towards the end Jerry chose the drug over his friends, the band and his family. As for the fans forgiving him, that is just conjecture. The fact is that we lost a beautifully talented person with keen insight to a terrible drug.

  • agreed. He brought me many yrs of happiness

  • not as terrible as this video sounds....

  • Brent fan; there's a great vid of Dead doing "Men Smart/Women Smarter" on here.. when Brent sings his line, he's so funny Jerry gets jazzed up ..

Never been another band like 'em .. the had their own community of people who didn't want to do the 9-5 .. u could sell shirts, and food, and of course other things .. And then just travel show to show.

    The were a workin'man's band.

  • I was at these shows at Long Island.

It was Great. As much as I miss Jerry. I missed Brent so much in the last shows I saw. Peace to both of them. My life will never be the same since I've encountered you guys.

  • This really brings back memories. One of my closest friends proposed to his fiancee at this concert, which also happens to be her birthday. (April Fool's Day) To top it off, I bought the last 3 tickets to the show,

  • no problem. Dead fans are used to seeing big purple dinosaurs!

  • Oh what Phil would do for Graham and Brian! Yeah he really loves to play to the younger crowd! ( Nyuk nyuk why I oughta..) Perhaps Levine can hook him up with Hannah Montana for a Phil and Friends tour....

  • Phil never looked or sang so well. Hardy har har! Too Fucking Funny! Jer,took a coulple of quixotic takes at the big purple dude.. and takes it all in with a gotcha grin! Remember Jer was am avid Prankster. Peace and Lightning

    LLL

  • i fucken hate barney........hes a gay fucken dino and bad for kids.....but @ a dead show....its ok

  • Hilarious. I Especially love how Jerry is clueless throughout most of the song that theres a big purple dinosaur playin bass

  • Love the trumpet! The MIDI was installed @ Jerry's Request, it was not forced on him. Phil was not dressed as Barney.

  • LOL how did i never hear about this ! bless them now I know how Barney got purple !

  • awesome wished my 4 yr grand girl hadda seen this live; she would have twirled to this Peace IJK

  • Haha. I just read about this in Phil's book. So of course I'm watching for Jerry's reaction.

  • jerry does his double take about 4 minutes into the video

  • Purple Fuckin Dinosaur!!!!!!!

  • phil's son was on the side of the stage and that is why phil dressed up as barney which is cool but those midi sounds coming out of garcia's guitar were horrible. bob bralove sucks for putting that shit in jerry's guitar.

  • I was at this one- pretty close too. Phil didnt dress up as Barney, Coyote. He was down behind his monitor setup, barely visible, playing the bass.

  • i stand corrected bro,the reason for barney was at the time it was his son's hero, but i still stand by my views on bralove that midi was sooooo lame.lightning keep up your good work,be cool

  • Yeah it was for the kids, PLUS the April Fools gig on ALL of us.

    Peace Coyote

  • I liked some of Jerry's MIDI stuff (like the trumpet lines in Ramble on Rose), but this Aiko was not a particularly good example of his MIDI stuff.

But I always love the quote (and I'm paraphrasing) that when Barlow heard one MIDI solo and said, "You could've been a great trumpet player," Jerry replied, "Bullshit, I AM a great trumpet player." Classic.

  • That's a great story -- WORD

  • Just to let you know, Phil got someone to dress up as Barney and he was just playin behind the amps. ;)

  • wow, if i was watching this live i would be seriously tripping...but i'm curious too, was barney phil or someone else?

  • Who was in the Barney costume?

  • Nice. Was at this show, and had no idea what was going on.
