As I see from the DVD he didn't make mistake - if you see closely the fingers are moving but the guitar after changing the tone had some kind of power problems and didn't make any sound.
@purplefurball:, i don't think of it as boring, its such a delight to listen to this album and even better watching him at his performances, then you know that it is real. heh.... best regards
Ommadawn is probably my favourite Mike Oldfield album. I love how on the original album the chant just builds, becoming more and more powerful. If anybody is interested here is a translation of the chant. Daddys in bed, the cat is drinking milk. I'm an idiot and I'm laughing. They were written down at random in English by Clodagh Simmons who is the vocalist on the original album. They were translated into Gaelic by her mother. In fact the title Ommadawn is based on the Gaelic word for idiot.
@ControlableInsanity Not really a mistake....he did lost timing...but he recovered it right on track. Now as in this concert and Exposed one....you do have a lot of notes being being screwed. I think he honestly plays live (and generally) better now than he played in the 80s. Of course this music demanded more of him that his latest one...maybe i'll give a an exceptions to MOTS...nice classical tunes there
so what is CLASSICAL music then? Beethovis? Choppin? Straus?????
Mike's better. Cleverer. They have one or two memorable riffs in an opus. His work is so fuckin original. It's so many hooks, so many melodies, so many emotions.
The Mozart of our age strikes again. Mike's dexterity is nothing short of amazing. To watch his fingers fly, and each instrument, seemingly beg for mercy. I love this piece, too!
I listened to this album almost non-stop as a teen. It's one of the few albums that I have that I never get tiered of. It is a masterpiece. In college I loved painting to this music.
So did I and also TB and HR but this was my favourite!!! Im still painting but not to this these days but the memories flood back with this!!! Saw him live in 1980. CD
although he siad himself, that he used half-speed recording on the studio-album, which gives double-speed in playback, he was able to do it live then. wow. Ommadawn was may first CD.
kinder than kind..my wee heart loves Hergest Ridge too (his first) which was very celtically loverly and all too overshadowed by the wonderful TB und this
Pity 1 female vocalist is missing; see this track, live at Knebworth performance. The other girl (Wendy Roberts??) is far better & Oldfield does not stuff up his guitar solo.
Superb performance! What Mike does with guitars, skipping from one instrument to the next is simply awesome. Thank you whobearUK for sharing all 3 parts, specially this one!
"Ommadawn" is more than a musical masterpiece, it´s what you´d call an "spiritual" experience, something beyond physical senses.
I´d like to share a visual interpretation based on part 2 on the album (the continuation to this live performance here), you can find the video by typing "Ommadawn Visions".
The chant starts at 4:11. I could listen to it all day. I just wish Mike Oldfield wouldn't keep breaking the spell with his disturbing interludes. Any chance of a re-edit with the harsh bits taken out?
I would have to disagree about Maggie. The tone of her voice is beautiful and effortless, but she seems inexperienced vocally. She lacks a strong mental concept and that results in not being able to place pitches with good accuracy. If you see her in later years, her voice is immpecable
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I prefer the recorded version for a couple reasons. Wider variety of instruments. I really liked what the flute and classical string instruments do to the song. And the woman they chose to do the live vocals, in my opinion, is horrible.
Without the help of tons of other musicians, the live performances can never measure up to the studio albums. Still, it's great to actually see Mike play.
What?? Horrible?? Dude, that woman is Maggie Reilly herself. Live does sound different than the original but describing Maggie as horrible...I don't know.
Maybe Mike is not the greatest guitarist, though I would disagree. But I have yet to see any of the "better" guitarists play any other instruments. So I suppose Mike is the best musician!
So many performances get 'fixed' for DVDs, that I kinda like the honesty of this 'warts & all' release. And, really, the few mistakes are easily forgiven. It's a long set and Mike's constantly working - often complex pieces. I don't think many that watched the concert would deny the phenomenal level of playing.
I absolutely agree. Besides we can see on the DVD that Mike was sweating almost all the concert long, it must have been very warm on the stage and I would rather wonder how he managed not to make MORE mistakes ! :-)
I absolutely agree. Besides we can see on the DVD that Mike was sweating almost all the concert long, it must have been very warm on the stage and I would rather wonder how he managed not to make MORE mistakes ! :-)
To all those who criticise the "fail", I say: you do it! Me, I'll just travel back in my mind to the West Sands at St Andrews, where this great music always takes me.
I am going to buy that dvd right now, I did not realize how good was this performance. Ommadawn is the masterpiece from a imcomparable guitar player. Check out his performances in the early Kevin Ayers records, at age 17.
Maggie Reilly Who contributed to Ommadawn, QE2, Five Miles Out, Crisis and Discovery : then was discarded by Mike Oldfield and it was a great mistake because her voice and his music was the greatest alchemy you could find. After Discovery, Mike Oldfield dived into oblivion because his further albums were really mediocre.
Amarok is the best of his "post Maggie Reilly" Era (with Islands), but Earth Moving was really awful, Heaven's open was poor, Tubular Bells 2 or 3 are audible; Tres Lunas, the Millenium Bells, Light and Shade are too much "New age". I mean that I can listen to his 1970-1985 albums every day, many times a day (All but Hergest ridge) but I rarely listen to the others. His "Maggie Reilly" era, for me, provides us with the best of his art. (I'm an heavy Mike Oldfield fan since 1979 and still a fan)
Music of the Sphere is a great album but there's maybe too much of Carl Jenkins's touch in it. As a fan of Adiemus also, I should mingle while listening to Music of the Spheres between an Adiemus album and a Mike Oldfield Album. However, I find this really enjoyable and Music of the Spheres is a pleasant mix between Incantations and Adiemus.
The tunes are cool. But the keyboard guy looks like the kinda guy who locks himself in the bathroom with drunk broads at parties. Then proceeds to dig around in their gotch while they lay there, passed out.
I have all Mike Oldfields music, I dig it a bit but there is something boring in it. He can play guitar ok but not the best. sorry if you get pissed off.
Ommadawn is maybe his best, it makes me cry its so sad.
LOL!!! Watch the moment at 05:58 when the keyboard player takes off his mic headset thinking the singing is over, then instantly putting it back on when he realises he has to sing another line!!! Absolutely hilarious!!
The world's best guitarist doesn't fail like in 1:27, pal... He's over the average for rock standards, but making such an absolute statement is a bit too much, I think...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Of course, everybody can fail. But that run is a relatively easy one to mess it up like that, and being a good guitarrist doesn't mean being the best one (neither Oldfield nor Vai are). About his geniality: had he died in, let's say, a car crash after Incantations, he might have been a rock genius. But everything he has done since then -Amarok excluded- is falling lower and lower.
I have to be thankful though, because (despite finding nowadays the most of his stuff mere average) it was the beginning of a long way that would take to New Age, Minimal Music, and afterwards to Avantgarde, Jazz, some World and Ethnic Music, and back to classics. Without being an annoying hardcore Mike Oldfield for a couple of years in my teens it probably wouldn't have happened (that way, at least).
Ommadawn, Tubular Bells, some parts of Incantations, the end of Hergest Ridge Pt.1, The Platinum Side A, couple of cuts of QE2, Taurus I&II(not the whole II), some cuts from "The Wind Chimes", and 3/4s of Amarok ist all you need from Mike Oldfield. The rest is a complete waste of money.
Excellent.
Why does it seem that the drummer is the only one who looks happy (7:10)?

I have all Mike Oldfields music, I dig it a bit but there is something boring in it. He can play guitar ok but not the best. sorry if you get pissed off.
Ommadawn is maybe his best, it makes me cry its so sad.
But could be shorter, it is repeat after repeat

If it makes you cry... then it's done its job as a work of art. :)

whats wrong with repating something if its fantastic,it could repeat itself all day and i would never get bored with it.
the more repeats the better ..please!
Mike also said something like this in explaining his music.

The guitar solo shows Mike at his very best, and doing what he does best.........playing the guitar. Sheer genius at work.

LOL!!! Watch the moment at 05:58 when the keyboard player takes off his mic headset thinking the singing is over, then instantly putting it back on when he realises he has to sing another line!!! Absolutely hilarious!!

Mike Oldfield IS the worlds best guitarist!
RickardJohansson 5 years ago 2
The world's best guitarist doesn't fail like in 1:27, pal... He's over the average for rock standards, but making such an absolute statement is a bit too much, I think...

Steve Vai failed playing Tender Surrender in Brazil. And not only Vai others have failed too.
And this mistake doesn't erases the geniality of Oldfield's music

The rest is a complete waste of money.

and Amarok
