I have yet to ride Metra's new EMUs on the MEL side, but they are surely better then these. Just because something is shiney and 'newer' doesn't make it better. I'm not 'taken by shiney things' or one of those folk who need something new just for sake of it being new - thats moronic.
I got to ride on an M-7A last Thursday. The M2 I was on had a break issue which led to a small fire at Harlem-125th Street. Everyone had to evacuate the train and we climbed onto the M-7 that was across the platform. I took it into Grand Central. I thought it was nice, but there were also many things I didn't like about it.
Let me say this - you New Haven riders are lucky - the state of Connecticut under the guidence of Jodi Rell are refusing to tolerate the fuck ups built into the M7As and have used them only as a "starting point" for their M8s - many things have been addressed - although MN is insisting they go with the single panel doors which is really stupid.
What makes them shit boxes?
Atleast you are getting new equipment and cars though...
We have had the same equipment and cars since the death of CNW, Rock Island, and IC passenger services
we have newer cars but it's the same principal and the majority of our locomotives are F40PH's (diesel)
CHICAGO NEEDS THIRD RAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if they can do it in NY why not in Northeastern Illinois???

@nhlives There is a difference between old and outdated...
And the EMU's on the Metra Electric probably are better if you're so adamant about the poor quality of the M7a's
