I had to laugh as I understand where Devin came from when trying to find himself through life experiences and talking to other people about them as it's so true. He stated pretty much the sum what he meant at 2:46 - 3:08. In Essence, you say to those older than you "my god, I just came to this profound conclusion about everything - it's all Nature!!"

He stated pretty much the sum what he meant at 2:46 - 3:08. In Essence, you say to those older than you "my god, I just came to this profound conclusion about the true nature of the universe!!"
I have a feeling he'll get pissed off again, and SYL could get back together. Just because he's calmed down doesn't mean he isn't ready to have something piss him off again. The first 4 SYL records were definitely fueled by inner tension, and that can always come back. But it's great that he doesn't HAVE to use them any more, he can do what he wants and still be loved by his fans.
I say support devin if you can. But if you LITERALLY can't support cuz of being broke constantly then atleast download his work. Devin's main concern is just that you hear it. Rememeber he gets paid for doing these interviews too as well as touring money. But Devin is just one of those true musicians that isnt greedy towards the industry, just has the passion and love for sounds of melody and harmony.
I agree with devin, on the downlaoding aspects. Downloading is good for checking, supporting shit records from a band isnt what should be supported... just the good ones :D
"If your not sure about whether or not this is something that you want, don't spend your money, download the record, but if you like it and you want to see them live, then buy a t-shirt or buy a record"
Addicted is one of the best albums I have heard in who knows how long. I'm going to buy this asap.
Don't know devin's work very well but he seems very interesting. I have the final Strapping Young Lad album, I'm also well into prog and probably ambient stuff but dont have much knowledge of that genre. Could anyone know recommend any albums to try next?
I have bought everything this guy has recorded. There's so much going on no matter what the project. I saw him first with Steve Vai. And every single time he's been in the area. Always interesting & exciting no matter what the project. His honesty is infectious.
Dev is the only person I've ever heard who shares the same belief with me on downloading. I don't buy albums because just because I want them, I buy them because at least a small amount of that is going towards paying for tours and studio time for the artist. However, when first listening to a band or single musician, I will always download a few of their songs first.
"Nature's awesome, and I don't understand anything. great. ok, let's make a record" :D He's so laid back.. and gave us all some really fucking great music.
My view on the whole thing about technical "wank" in prog thing is that Dream Theater does it and they do it well but, they still have songs. Like if you played a person that doesn't like prog a Dream Theater song, they would listen for songwriting and they would find it.
Where as when a band like Protest the Hero does it, there's no song left. Just tech nonsense.
Basically, i think prog has been narrowed to a closed thing that contradicts the original idea at an attempt to be popular.
I respect Protest The Hero far, far more than Dream Theater, even from a songwriting perspective. Not only are their lyrics vastly superior, and there is more technical development. Sure, Dream Theater has more "verse, chorus, verse" structure, but they're annoying, their wanky shit sounds lame and it's dull. PTH has a structure, it's just a progressing time structure. It's actually more difficult to write a PTH style song than a DT style song, because you need to adapt to the next parts. Dolt.
So you're calling DT wanky and saying that "verse, chorus, verse" is annoying when PTH's music is constantly stopping and starting. Part of songwriting is how well parts "flow" together, which PTH obviously has no skill at. Also, I don't seem to understand why you value storytelling over personal lyrics. All of that aside, DT started out when progressive music was NOT cool and PTH formed when "Tech Prog" was gaining popularity. In closing I will say that i"m not a dolt and i'm a fan of your vids
Well, if you listen with more of an open mind, the way PTH's songs flow is quite impressive. There isn't a bit that sounds out of place in any of their songs.
I like storytelling over personal lyrics probably because I myself enjoy writing out stories and reading literature, so I respect the aspects of such things being evident in songs. Especially when they put personal stuff in the story telling, like PTH did with Kezia.
What are you talking about, dude? PTH has no skill in songwriting? I call bullshit on that. Take out the lead parts, the wanking of Luke's guitar playing, and then observe how they construct their song. Minimal repetition, and written in a short span of time as compared to like Opeth who go places with there song but extend it to about 4 bars. That's the charm of PTH, not the wanking aspect. At least to me, it is.
More importantly though, there is a time and place for everything.
I used to listen to PTH a few years ago, but when my metal tastes started to grow, I lost interest. They really aren't that progressive at all. Like you said, their mostly wankery nonsense.
I'm glad he shares my view on progressive music. Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation I believe has a similar view as well. It disappoints me when bands like Dream Theater (even though I love them) that have been doing the same thing for over a decade now get labelled as progressive.
It's an appropriate tag for the "unconventional" time signatures etc that Prog Rock introduced and other bands, like DT, have continued and experimented with. I don't mind it, because it's music, right? If it moves you, if you connect with it then who cares what it's been labelled as?
I suppose so, yes. Certainly, there are pieces that push the norm to the extreme, especially in jazz. It depends whether you want the literal meaning of "progressive" or what it has come to represent. Neither bother me - it's the music, I care about.
P.s. On a sidenote,
"...if people want to see it."
We want to see it, Devin. We very much want to see it!
The video for 'Almost Again' is awesome. Gave that song a whole new depth to me, and I'd thought it was amazing already. He also did a great job on 'Bend it like Bender!". Seems like a great counterpart for Devin's music.
lol..i understand exactly the "nature´s the only thing that makes sense to me"..and relate even more with the fact that we don´t understand it..except that i´m still fighting with the idea of being a part of it and happily reproduce and all that shit...existing just because....i think is healthy and even necessary to curse and question creation at least once ..specialy when you have the feeling that you don´t understand anything, but "they/it" don´t either..
