I know from watching the extra features on the DVD that that was the intent but it just didn't work for me. Personally, I loved this movie. In my opinion, it's like Nature's way of saying that if we don't quit polluting the Earth and doing all this crap to it, somehow it is going to wipe us all out so we don't cause more destruction. But unless we can just stop everything that we've been doing to the Earth, everything will be alright. And bees including. We have to stop using our cell phones and technology so much on a daily basis and more for important needs. But that's just my opinion.

I didn't think this movie was THAT bad. I mean, some of the reviews I've read, kind of read like "If you watch this movie, you'll get cancer and die." But it managed to keep my attention - although Zooey Deschanel's part was ... was ... just strange and kind of annoying - like she didn't know what she was doing (and don't get me wrong, I usually love her in her roles).

It just wasn't as bad as I had expected - I was in a mood to watch a BAD movie, dammit, and this wasn't it. Just IMAO.

The plants caused it. The plants sent out a chemical toxin in the air which blocked neuron transmitters in the brain which in then the plants would make the person kill themselves. It's at the end of the film.
