  • Absolutely amazing layout. So much love and skill to be seen in it. I agree, never disassemble this layout! I'm sure it gave Carl and his family and friends lots of pleasure. You did Carl a real service putting this video together. Great job with the sound effects and showing the details of this wonderful layout.

  • Explain how the trolley bus operates.

  • Men like this are increasingly rare. A true artist working in traditional and mechanical mediums. Never dismantle this track, it serves as inspiration for many generations to come. {my 4 yr old found this video!}

  • what a super layout god bless you carl rest in peace iam sure your son is proud of you and you like wise please dont ever dismantle the layout i always pop back to get insperation i model oo gauge british diesel electrics around the 60 s to 70 s end of the steam era many thanks for sharing... chas

  • This was a nice vid although I am a prototype modeler this layout was just a lot of fun to see. Well Done!!! Steve

  • Great layout, and a fitting memorial to Carl.

Trains were running a bit too fast, though.

  • This is a very fine layout! May God Bless Carl! This is a lovely testament to his life! May his family and friends keep this marvelous layout! Thanks, NgaiO

  • I keep coming back to this model again and again, a creation of true beauty and complete dedication. Every time I see something different and am still totally amazed at what a private (but very talented) man can achieve.

  • I dont like it...................... I LOVE IT!

  • Liked this video alot. I am in the middle of creating my first model village and this was great inspiration. :)

  • Good video!!! 5*

  • Awesome. My son loved this. He said "Whoa!" about 30 times during this lol! THANK YOU! RIP Carl, your passion for trains was inspiring.

  • Posthumous thanks to Mr. Dorsch for the fantastic layout, and to you for the excellently done video!

  • Remarkable! Truly a work of love for the model train hobby. A work very well done and thought out. What a legacy to leave for others to enjoy. Bravo!

  • This has to be the epitome of dedication to the hobby. It was fairly obvious duting his opening presentation that Carl Dorsch was a sick man and his passing is sadly regretted BUT what a legacy to leave behind !! If there is a railway in, or to, Heaven he must be running it !

  • nice layout have not see a good one like this in sometime

  • THIS layout is one of the most FANTASTIC, CREATIVE and heartfelt I have seen. It should be in a MUSEUM for train enthusiasts to enjoy forever...it's TOO great to EVER be dismantled...the WORK, and detail that went into it is unbelieveable...and will be enjoyed by 1000's , I'm sure... GREATTTTTTTTTTTTT JOB!!!

    : ) Cheers from Scott W. ( S.F./Bay area, CA)

  • many cool details!

  • @SirRippie he means a little too much JUST for model trains

  • How wonderful, my three year old great grand son who is showing an interest in trains enjoyed watching this video. Thank you Carl for your display. What a great legacy

  • Awesome layout it was a lot of fun watching And awesome camera work

  • Wonderful layout. Great video! Hope the son carries on...and may Mr. Dorsch rest in God's peace!

  • I liked the layout but the trains were moving too fast for reality-just my oppinion. Sorry to hear he died in December. God rest his soul in Colin City heaven!

  • Like it, I loved it. I wish more kids would get interested in something like this. Carl will be missed by men like myself. I hope he knew that he brought joy to the hearts of people everywhere that were able to see his train layout. I hope someone will carry on with his hooy & keep it in good running order. From the guys @:The Ohio Veterans Home...

  • Very nice, I am about to start a HO Scale Model Train with my 3 year old son. He loves trains and since we have been taking him to Train expo's, it got my childhood interest to try and create my first layout with realistic looking landscape.

  • fun 2 watch- i especially like the amusement park

  • RIP Carl.....This video tells a story and took us to another world. I like the sound effects and how after sweeping over the landscape, you then zero in to an eye catching moment. From Santa and his sleigh to the roller coaster to the Ford sign on the Auto Body shop.....We Thank you both, Carl & SirRippie for a wonderful trip to a time gone by. (kuddos to you also, CJDarts)

  • very impressive layout, R.I.P. sir

  • amazing...i'm very sorry mrs. kilburg

  • The name came when I was a teenager. Like so many others I was fascinated by the NASA moon landing. As Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became famous for their moonwalk, Michael Collins was left to pilot the Apollo spacecraft orbiting the moon. I always felt bad for him, and decided to name our Christmas train layout to honor him.

We are grateful to SirRipple for making this awesome video that we will have to always remember what was one of dads passions and centerpieces of our family.

  • It was a labor of love for my dad, and an activity that we could share in together. There were lots of magical moments as we discovered or built new items to add; some serious, some whimsical, but never boring. The best features of the layout are not structures, trains, vehicles, plastic people or anything else that you see in the video; but the sharing of passions and bonding between a dad and his son.

  • It was never intended as a model railroad. They were just fun Christmas trains. Up until about 5 years ago, every year in February everything but the track was removed from the platforms and stored in boxes. The platforms were hung from the ceiling to be out of the way for normal family activities during the rest of the year. Then the following November, everything was set up again for the Christmas season. We used photographs to get things set in the right places.

  • I am the son of Carl Dorsch, who passed away on December 27, 2009. Thank you for all of the comments about the Collins City layout.

Just to give some history, the layout started as trains (actually the trolley bus) under the Christmas tree 56 years ago, before I was born. As I grew older, the layout grew and we were eventually thrown out of the living room by my mom to the basement. Once there, we about doubled the size again.

  • that wily cool

  • tehe he means nice layout but he thinks too many trains are running at once i think this layout is amazing well done! :)

  • That was good fun. My compliments.

  • the rollercoaster and the ferry are amazing and they built that from scrach simply amazing hope the one im building will be somwhat close to that hahaha

  • Absolultely increedible! Complete with roller coaster, working merry-go-round, and Santa and his reindeer in the sky!

A genuine treat to see this! Wow! Thank you. You have made my day for many reasons to see such a wonderful , well thought-out layout: this is a real labor of love.

Merry Christmas to you. Thank you for sharing this.

    Feliz Navidad!

  • @elsangrecaliente :( read the desription

  • COOL!!!

    What scale is this?

  • Bravo !!!

  • Too much going on. Minimalism is a concept model RR's need to learn.

  • Minimalism and prototypical are not for everyone... They have their place as do our tastes of lots of action... This is a wonderful layout and a joy to watch !!!

  • that was......AWSOME!!!!

  • Yeah its rteally cool but... little 2 much just trains

  • Haha, that's so awesome!

    Love it!

  • how douse the bus work

  • Awesome layout:-))

  • awsome very nice.. if you shuld see the real model train layout. then visit miniature wunderland. it is in germany in hamburg thanks...........

  • Fantastic detail ............ must have taken decades to build ! Superb !!!

  • what scale

  • HO scale.....

  • lots of fun to watch! where did you get the church with the gold onion dome? thanks for sharing your treasure with all of us...........

  • good job on the table and the video

  • I just bought a house and plan on putting trains in my basement... I love watching all these videos.. Nice Job Pop

  • Just amazing. My son got a train set for Christmas. If we can do half of what Carl has done here, I would be thrilled. This is great.

  • This isnt meant to be a MODEL railway....Its just the best train set in the world.....Kids of any age will love this.....

  • I'm totally in awe of Collins City. Amazing!

  • WOW,...I am hooked,..I love miniatures!

  • This layout is sweet!! It ranks right up there with Charlemagne's Kingdom in Helen, GA

  • What that "In the Stone" the band was playing? Is he a corps fan as well??? Cool!

  • Unbelievable..

  • If the man enjoys it that is all that matters.

  • It is this very pervasive, browbeating attitude that turns many away from this awesome hobby. This gentleman represents the MAJORITY of hobbyists, and it is HIS unique design. Why on God's Earth would you look down your nose at this? There are way too many nit-pickers in this world, and far too few dreamers, idealists and fun-seekers.

This video took me back to 1:45AM, Christmas morning, 1977. I loved it. Don't change A THING.

  • Nice Layout. Too bad MRR probably wouldn't publish this--Their loss. You represent a larger majority of modelers Than MRR publishes. Nice structures. Looks like you kept the Fun in model railroading which seems to be lost today with too much focus on realism.

  • Great stuff, love all the vintage Tyco, Mantua...looks like some Varney and Revell as well. Don't mind the "professional modelers", probably has a shrine to Tony Koester in his layout room. I appreciate the owner letting you film it, nice editing and sound track.

  • fantastic!!!!

  • slow the speed on some of the things down but over all THIS IS EFFING BRILIANT

  • Amazing.

  • I am starting my first train set and with any luck it will turn out like this

  • What a stunning layout, the level of detail is just incredible! Nice camera, editing and sound work as well!

I think it would look even better if things were slowed down a bit. The trains, bus, ferris wheel, steamboat - all are hurtling about at furious, impossible speeds. Everything else is so realistic, the manic speeds are jarring.

    Masterful work overall!

  • amazing town -- needs an adult book store and corner tavern, though

  • Nice sound effects but maybe you should consider some music (maybe some narration too). But good filming and editing.

That is a cool layout! all the buildings are built from scratch? even if they are not... Roller coaster? a steam boat? OMG thats too good!

  • The Carnival show was awesome! The strongest man and the Chick with a third leg. Nice touch. Very Cool!

  • These trains i swear!!! Once you start you can't and don't want to stop. Great layout, great video.

  • no effing way! There's a steamboat? haha!

  • hey! do you know where the little electric bus comes from? I've only seen two now.

  • great audio fills... loved it !!

  • that is amazing, i love the layout and detail put into it

  • Very nice layout. The coaster is fantastic!

  • Nice video.

  • very nice! i love the part when you show the band and play some band noise

  • Good job on the layout-job well done! I enjoyed wathcing the video and I'll watch it again. I'd never leave that room!

  • nice layout, very nice video and audio work.

    detailing is wonderful.well done !!!!

  • Slowing down your trains and vehicles will do wonders for the realism if your video.

  • I second that, especially in the end with the boat. That one should go very slowly.

    But great video, nice editing!

  • As good as the train layout is, your video presentation of it is even better! Very nice video presentation, young man!

  • It is the most Excellent Train Layout I have Ever Seen you should be very Proud!!....Cheers Adamp1100

  • awesome amazing harika otesi

  • WOW! thats one of the best layouts ive ever seen! that roller coaster was really cool!

  • Very nice layout...and this is the best quality video I've seen on You Tube, it's nice to see people who put in the kind of effort you did with this, thank you!

  • Very Very Cool but that street car seems to be in abit of a Hurry, LOL must be nearing his lunchbreak...

  • Great Job! Thx for sharing this!

  • Awesome. I love the scratch stuff you guys built.

  • I really loved the animation in the layout 5 stars without a dought

  • what can i say. awesome

  • Excellent...both the layout and the audio/video production. Well done. Excellent camera work. The audio composition is very well thought out. Just amazing to watch.

That was quite impressive, thanks a bunch for sharing.

  • Excellent...both the layout and the audio/video production. Well done.

  • Excellent camera work. The audio composition is very well thought out. Just amazing to watch.

    A masterpiece!

  • Wow! Reminds me of some actual places I've seen as kid growing up in Pittsburgh. Well done.

  • AWESOME LAYOUT, I REALLY LIKED IT!

  • my father would have said what a great layout thanks for keeping train gardens going i love mine just not as "big" yours is just fantastic

  • lol be funny if a gaint CAt was walking around on the layout people sounds screaming haha

  • Excellent layout!!!

  • Best carnival/amusement park display I've ever seen.

  • That was quite impressive, thanks a bunch for sharing.

  • You should put a camera on one of the cars and tape an entire journey through this model city, but this was just awsome!

  • Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its hypnotic!

  • how uch did all that cost?

  • what train scale is that??

  • Best off!!!

  • The Best Lay out I have ever seen. What a work of art.

  • The roller coaster is great it has made me want an amusement park scene on my own layout.

  • Great ! It is easy to tell that the builder had an awesome time putting it together. Thanks for sharing it.

  • How do you keep it free of dust?

  • that is awsme what else could it mean? i mean the roller coaster the complexity of it...

    ps

how much power does it require?

  • not much at all

  • am i seeing right?

  • Amazing. Love the luna park and the tram

  • nice rr dood

  • What scale. Nice layout...

  • I SWEAR THIS IS MY DREAM

  • geezus thats amazing

  • Cool I love the trolley bus

  • Merry Christmas!

  • excellent layout, though the trains ran a little too fast.

  • Love the Rollercoaster!

  • a lot of work went into this display

  • this is one of the most amazing rail roads in history.I say you'r a true rail roader I saloot you sir!.

  • very nice layout like the trains and scenery personally i like the country a little more thatn the city but thats me still very nice layout really like the parade and coal mine workers and train

  • Absolutely brilliant. The trains are great. The fountain and the rollercoaster were unexpected. Even the sounds like the horse neighing were briliant. Will be watching this 1 again

  • great layout, trains run smooth.

  • very nice to see an oldfashioned layout still in use:-) Does Brawa/Eheim produce this trolleybus?;-)

  • Excellent video. Love the subtle sound editing. Great job!

As for the railroad itself, it's not what I would build, but there's not a thing in the world wrong with it. Everything runs (which is more than I can say for may "realistic" layouts I've seen) and the guy is obviously enjoying it a great deal.

  • what company makes that yellow street trolley/ bus at 01:30 in the video?

  • I am not sure, but it looks like a Brawa (or beofre Eheim) trolleybus, the ususally come in two tone colors, but it doesn't mean they have produced yellow ones during all these years.

  • Dude, I LOVE the documentary style. I wish there was more of this in America!

  • u need some grass but otherwise AWSOME!!!!

  • Al Mayo ladies and gentlemen. Exhibiting the kind of behavior that got his ass banned from the Atlas Forum.

  • You did a great job on the video edit but the layout, I am not so much impressed. It is too busy and too cluttered wit track and buildings, very unrealistic in my opinion. All the track is unballasted.

  • Well monsterrailroad, it's this guys world not yours. Don't listen to pricks like this. Don't change anything on this layout!! It is really cool

  • The SET is a spaghetti bowl design. Its just too busy and the trains have no meaning. They just go round and round. Unrealistically over and under other track. Its like he just crammed as many buildings and track on the layout as he could. Dont get me wrong, I understand it is his world and he will do what he pleases, but I am just sayin g to my eyes, its kinda wack. I am being honest thats all

  • just for the record, I surprised the guy showing up with my camcorder wanting to videotape it. My family was just going over to look at it. I asked him to start everything up to make it look more interesting. No time was taken to get the "speeds" correct. And he does this purely for his own entertainment out of his basement. Not to prove anything to anyone. He never asked for a video. I just thought i might be nice to show people on here his hard work.

  • Just found this video now. Bowl of Spaghetti layouts were quite popular in the 1930 to 1950 era. These layouts had lots of trains, trolleys, etc. because they were a reflection of US and Europe before 1920 and before automobiles. Except for scale and geographic spread, this is not a bad snapshot of Chicago, Berlin, London, or Buffalo. Lots of trains in motion, almost everywhere you look. Personally, I prefer the more sedate 1960s & 70s when US railroads were retrenching--just taste!

  • Wonderful workmanship and attention to detail. Love the sound effects.

  • Thumbs up! Would love to live in a city like that! Troleybus with wires, amazing!

  • wow that is pretty darn cool, especially the amusement park!

  • No, it's fine, It's worth the wait anyway.

  • guys i have a question for you.. is this video taking too long to load? I can reupload it at a smaller bitrate if thats the case.

  • really nice

  • i have to tell, this layout is impressive, it's like small city, just beautifull.
