My biggest problem with organic just isn't its lower yields or lack of nutritional benefits, but that it's nothing but dogma, a rigid code based an the appeal to nature fallacy. Does it raise good points? Absolutely, like how we should promote biodiversity and further develop biological ag techniques, like intercroping and mating disruption, but to automatically reject things like GE crops or synthetically produced inputs simply because they're viewed as 'unnatural' is completely ridiculous.
Genetic modification is the next step up from the eugenics farmers have practised for centuries. My late Grandmother used to breed her own unique species of plants all the time through cross polination, and selecting for desired traits over many generations. Brocolli itself cited in your example is actually a eugenically grown offshoot of wild mustard. Along with cauliflower, collard greens, cabbage, kale, savoy and Brussels sprouts.
I like Your arguments, and your willingness to explain your points despite the point others will occasionally make of being willfully ignorant. Keep it up I find it entertaining probably mostly because I've watched like eight of your casts and each is like watching someone talk about shit I've thought for years, but got tired of explaining. I just have to say your fucking awesome and keep pissing excellence.

continued. . If you have a fish allergy you should not eat GM tomatoes. They use a fish protein to make the tomatoes more resistant to cold weather. In the 1990s there was a severe allergic reaction to a GM type of corn. The crop needed to be destroyed, by the time this was discovered the crop had already spread contaminating other crops. The total lost was nearly 1 billion dollars.
I definitely agree that Monsanto is something that needs to be discussed. They have way too much power. I did have some issues with your opinion on GMO and conventional crops. I'm all for the use of technology. Organic does not have to be inferior to conventional methods, in terms of yield and nutritional content. Technologies like hydroponics allow an even larger yield and these crops can be grow organically. Also GMOs have been linked to food allergies.
Based on this statement, I'm not sure you know what organic actually means. If my understanding is correct, hydroponic gardening and organic gardening are mutually exclusive concepts.
GMOs have been linked to food allergies, sure. All that means is that some isolated uses of GMOs as a tool have had less than positive outcomes, but it doesn't damn genetic modification as a tool to be used.
@TheWALOS Organic means using environmentally sound methods that do not involve inputs such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers do not contain genetically modified organisms. Hydroponics use a nutrient solution that is not synthetic. There is a debate as to what exactly qualifies as organic but there are certified organic hydroponic systems. I'm definitely not damning GMO, I just don't want it to be the only option.
I've taken Nutritional Science, and I can tell you that shell-fish allergies are the result of an allergy to specific protein that can only really by found in shell-fish and some other arthropods, generally wherever hymolymph is present if I'm not mistaken. All this means is that the scientists modifying the foods need to use different proteins. That's it. Also, what in the hell is "chemical fertilizer"? I find that term ironic seeing as though all food is simply chemicals.
"You're wearing fucking pants" that made me laugh. I figured you'd mention medicine, which is probably the biggest way you can tamper with evolution, but is clearly not a bad thing. Unless natural selection is more important to you than man's well being.
I actually did mention medicine to him at the talk, but I didn't mention that example in the video. I guess I just forgot. Good call, though. I'm thumbing this comment because it's an extremely good point.
The hipsters are crazy. They never bother to research any of your points or really any point at all. Its all a social status thing and I'm glad none of these moronic people I have discussed this topic with are in office.
I'm a student of molecular biology & biotechnology, and nothing irks me more than the grossly ignorant attitude the public has nowadays towards progress in this field. I've been in your position many times at discussions, just horrified at how vacuous the arguments were (there were even arguments) of these smug, pampered bronze age hipsters.
It's just that the truth is that nature actually makes pretty shitty food. A lot of totally natural foods are nutritionally vacuous, like the cassava. Scientists want to genetically engineer cassava to be nutritionally dense so that people in south africa could grow crops to feed themselves (because apparently cassava grows like fucking wildfire down there). But sign-toting hippies are keeping people from doing the research and development required to feed those people.

"Organic means using environmentally sound methods that do not involve inputs such as pesticides "
Uh, except that organic foods use pesticides, too. This is a good example of how the organic movement trumps propaganda over scientific fact.

I don't see why we shouldn't fuck with evolution.
