  • FYI an EMT and Paramedic are 2 different things. Paramedics are more skilled than EMTs and go to school much longer.

  • Is there a way to make more money than 30k a year? Like what promotions are available?

  • EMT-B's make 25-40 grand. Paramedics make 45-75000 median in California. I know a Paramedic making 85000 in San Francisco after 4 years. It all depends by city and state.

  • Just curious, but can an Ex-Felon become an EMT in California?

  • probably not

  • another thing to keep in mind, those of you whom are an intermediate or plan to be, the department of transportation is doing some changes. There will no longer be an intermediate, only EMT-B or paramedic. Just something I thought I'd share.

  • @Michelena192 in all states

  • anyone know starting salary for a paramedic in the toronto area?also if u know how much they make after a few years of experience tha'll be much appreciated!

  • paramedic and an EMT are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination. there are EMT-B (basic level 6 week class) requires certification test. EmtI(intermediate. Paramedics have years of training. She shouldn't be offerring advice on what she does no know. A scounselor? How frightening!

  • wake up call the emt-b course at advocate christ is a 6 month course, and the paramedic is only 10 months.medic's in chicago start at 45,000 to start and 72,000 after 5 years.

  • Highly doubt it. Working 100hour per week after 5 years maybe.

  • I ment through the fire deptments here in northern illinois.Chicago fire dept emt-p's 45k to start and 75k and that is salary thank you.also only working three days a week.and now the fire dept are starting to faze out 24hr shifts for 12hr.Come to chicago apply for the chicago fire dept. and tell me if I should be doubted.

  • no thats ok haha. I'm not an emt anymore anyway. I have family who are professional firefighters and make about that with over time extra calls. probably around 60 if they only did there 2 24 hour shifts per week. I wasnt thinking ff/emtp, I was only thing emtp at a commercial company or hospital... National average is horribly low at 40k ish for 40 hours per week.

  • Emt-p in the chicago fired dept make the exact amount per year as the fire fighters.I think it should be different pay scale since emt -p Are always busy while the fire bugs sleep.emt's deserve more dinero

  • also there is no longer emt-I

  • Outside of the NHTSA framework, some states have instituted their own intermediate EMT levels using a variety of names (e.g. EMT-II (2) in California[10] or the levels of Advanced EMT-Intermediate and Advanced EMT-Critical Care in New York[11]).

  • The standard curriculum for EMT-I from 1998 is defined by the NHTSA, but each state may not have implemented or approved this program. Many states have stopped issuing new Intermediate licensure, instead focusing on maintaining the current lists of intermediates they have, and encouraging the Basic to Paramedic program philosophy.

  • EMT-Intermediates are the levels of training between basic (EMT-B) and paramedic (EMT-P). There are two intermediate levels that are tested for by the NREMT, the EMT-I/85 and the EMT-I/99, with the 1999 level being the more advanced of the two.

  • Some medications (for example, epinephrine for anaphylactic shock (severe allergic reaction) administered through an autoinjection device such as an EpiPen) can only be administered or "assisted" to a patient with a prior prescription. Training requirements and treatment protocols vary from area to area.[7][8]

  • EMTs tend to a spiral fracture at a roller derby bout.EMT-Basic is the entry level of EMS.[6] The procedures and skills allowed at this level are generally non-invasive such as bleeding control, positive pressure ventilation with a bag valve mask, supplemental oxygen administration, and splinting (including full spinal immobilization). Splinting a femur fracture may involve use of a traction splint, which will reduce the fracture

  • Some states also recognize the Advanced Practice or Critical Care Paramedic level as a state-specific licensure above that of the paramedic. In addition, paramedics can seek out specialty certifications such as Wilderness Paramedic, or Flight Paramedic.

The NHTSA recognizes four levels of EMTs[2]:

    EMT-B (Basic)

    EMT-I/85 (Intermediate)

    EMT-I/99 (Intermediate)

    EMT-P (Paramedic)

  • The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is a private organization[3] which provides certification exams written based on NHTSA education guidelines.[4] Currently, NREMT exams are used by 46 states as the sole basis for certification at one or more EMT certification levels.[5]

  • In the United States, EMTs are certified according to their level of training. Individual states set their own standards of certification (or licensure, in some cases) and all EMT training must meet the minimum requirements as set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) standards for curriculum
