OK, didn't have a clue what this was, but I am a fan of Ichi the Killer. But, this... loooks.... awesome..... Vampire/Samurai/Mass-Murder/WTF? HELL YES!!!!
@Hugehugo912 Izo is not a vampire, just to let you know. If your not familiar with Miikes cinematic genius you should check out some more of his films. MPD Psycho, Gozu, Sukiyaki Western Django, Crows, Audition, and Imprint.
I'll summarize the film: He revolts against everything (e.g., the scholars, bureaucrats, the scene in which he cuts off their heads), but he ultimately cannot defeat "God".
Because Izo is no human, he is just a monster like any one of us, I think the idea of this film is about rage, and the fact that true rage doesn't have a good/evil perspective, it's all about force, the force to murder that is...
I think it's about rebellion. He realizes the "evil" aspect in all forms of tradition/systems. He realizes in families, education, and so forth hierarchy and orders of power exist, and as a result, he rebels. Remember the scene with the children in the classroom regurgitating pessimistic passages? Well, in some ways, this is how reality really is - it is depicting how there is an invisible stampede and the only way to escape to move out of the way like the movie Brazil by Gilliam.
There is the scene where Izo's master is then crucified for his part in all of this. Then one by one all of the archetypes regarding control in Japanese historical archetypes are all stalked then killed (samurai, WW2 military, businessman) He talks a lot about Gods and the questioning of their validity, existential crisis. Izo I see as the manifestation of culture, belief, control and ultimately the pain all of those bring upon us.
If you notice in the movie when the lady who follows him, says to the people (paraphrasing) "do no stand in his way, and you will not be hurt". The people all want answers that they will never have. The guitarist in the movie seems the only one to be one with his pain and by that understands life being painful and therefor already succumbs to it. The child tries to prevent Izo, ultimately leading to its death. This movie reflects alot about pain passed from person to person.
jesus, am i the only one who understood this movie...it is deeply philosophical and very symbolic but basically the killer izo represents revolution and evolution at the same time. i have watched this movie 8 or 9 times and every time i watch it i get a small piece of what this movie is really about...i fuckin love this movie...
Yes, I agree this movie rules on many levels, Very allegorical. Totally nihilistic and in many ways challenging the very aesthetic notions of even its own japanese culture of control, belief and various forms by which these are abused and evolve to create the Izo archetype. Awesome movie!
thanks modguy, i was able to understand alot, but still some parts elude me. when they call izo a grudge, i wondered if it ment the grudge of the people...like maybe people that have been screwed over buy the aristicrats represented in the movie. whats your take?
love miike´s style, ichi the killer and sukiyaki western django are great.
and now i want to see this movie.
can please someone tell me the name of the music in the background, it´s so sad and beautiful, i cant get it aut of my head need t know it, please please please!
I think the point of Izo was to be so senselessly violent and degrading to show us as humans that we tend to ignore the messages behind the violence, cause Izo has alot to say, especially if you understand the Japanese culture. This is one of my top 5 films, Miike, while I can't decipher to a T what he really wanted to convey with Izo, that is what I get from Izo when I watch it.
the most intelligent, deep and meaningful of all Miike's films. but the trailer is odd - they tried to make it look like a popular sword fighting movie, which it is not.
Miike finally did it! Izo is one of the decade masterpieces. Ichi is great but this one is pure geniality and it's the most personal among Miike's movies. Visitor Q and Gozu are very original and wild almost like Izo. But in Izo there's no limits to the fantasy of TAKASHI MIIKE. The great TAKESHI KITANO plays a small but cool character and the main actor Kazuya Nakayama is really good. Miike shoots 4/5 films a year with an extremely high standard quality. Just unbelievable
I have to say I don't enjoy this that much. I love 'Ichi the Killer' more than anything, but nothing that Miike has made seems to be as enjoyable. 'Like a Dragon' is pretty enjoyable too. C'mon Miike, made something like Ichi again!! ;-)
i saw this film on netflicks,.. and holy crap this was just mind-bending awesome!!! extremely gory-violent,more swordfights than ive ever seen in any film(at least 20 i counted) but it was also sad-and intelligent and had a deeper meaning than just swordfights like-revenge will kill youre spirit-big companies are evil and want your soul....
Haha Bob Sapp enter, thats fine, but he actually gets killed in the trailer aswell?

These are all good theories about the film, maybe it's both about rebellion and the divine rage that co-exists with it, probably.
