This bleakness spilt into my heart in black 1979, in a wonderful uplifting way. The following year, more horrific than punk, yuppie wannabees Spandau Ballet announced that their music was created as an opposite to Metal Box, which they considered to be the most depressing album ever. To cut a long story short, I head from M Radcliffe the other night that the Ballets are to reperform. And thankfully, like me, Mr Radcliffe, the only true peer to John Peel, albeit he seems to be a duet, scorned.
I accidently had the volume low - I could hear the bass and everything and I'm, like, "Isn't there any words or something? I cna see his lips moving..." lol
I don't think Lydon gets enough (or at least the right kind) of credit. People are always trashing him and saying he's a poseur, sellout, what have you...But he really shaped the face of punk. He made punk, he has the vision, the words, the music just naturally.
PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED is really groundbreaking stuff, in some ways more complex and developed than Sex Pistols, and they lasted longer. They really deserve more credit I think...
Well, that's at least a 16-year-old's point of view...
I dont think it was lydon that bought this sound about, he is more often than not influenced by the band members around him. Listen to some later tracks to hear how his styles change for the worse in my opinion.
He should have tried to keep this setup with wobble and levene together. It worked!
They're exactly the same song.........just different titles. 'Death Disco' was the title used on the "Metal Box" version of the album, while 'Swan Lake' was the title used on the "Second Edition" version. BTW, the song was inspired by the death of John's mother, hence the (original) title.
Atmospheric vid...I love the lighting and shadows in the video....And at the end, Keith and Wobble pretending to be 'The Shadows'!..hahaha...I'll get me coat.
Just amazing!! One of the best songs I've ever heard...and John is incredible in the video...god I love him...I wish I could have been to a PiL or a Pistols' gig...!!
He was also quoted as to why he stared so much, becauase he couldn't see the audience properly and putting 2+2 together what he said on 7 ages of rock, needing to keep a eye open for flying bottles etc LOL
I know John Lydon will probably hate me for saying this but :- fucking hell i love him here - and it is a bit of a genuine shame that PiL didnt -in this form -continue a little bit longer in this form because they were so fucking good!

which album this song is from? so far i have seen only a EP containing it.

It's from "Metal Box", a/k/a "Second Edition" in the States. Title is "Swan Lake" instead of "Death Disco" on "Second Edition".

When PiL first started playing live, Wobble had to sit in a chair because he couldn't really play the bass standing up.

Oh, that stare! It's eerie, and I'm no quite sure why...
Great song. Nice mutilated guitar from Levene. Wobble's bass is scintillating. And Lydon... Self-explanitory. Decent video.

John got his stare from a bout of meningitis as a child. The quote below is from his website bio...
"The meningitis would almost completely ruin his memory (and also be the cause of his now infamous stare)."

He was also quoted as to why he stared so much, becauase he couldn't see the audience properly and putting 2+2 together what he said on 7 ages of rock, needing to keep a eye open for flying bottles etc LOL
