17 year old reporting in: this what todays music should be, gets the heart going with the beat, body with the melody and the mood with the song itself.
2 years later the ventures were asked to come to Japan, but the promotor couldn't afford 4 of them so only Don and Bob came. But ever since they've been touring Japan twice a year. My first time actually seeing them was 1977 on a poolside.
@kundimankid12 why would you compare a modern day pop star to the most revolutionary band of the 20th century..? Even arguing about it is just pathetic
Back then, many performers were a little scared of the camera, and what with a more rigid conforming society, people weren't so unbuttoned like they are today, and appeared too stiff. The beatles changed so many social attitudes, including adopting a take us or leave us atitude which cought on like wildfire. Like it or not, we now have a situation where ANYTHING goes on TV---perhaps too far ?
@Phantoma3 Listen to the tune and think about it. It's not really a tune, it's more of a guitar run that gets repeated several times. I think even Ira Gershwin would have had a hard time setting this tune to music. In any case, this was from a time when people liked instrumental pop music. I like it too. I know the guitar parts to nearly every song I've ever heard, but I don't know the words because I don't listen to them. I prefer how a song sounds to what the lyrics are about.
@ 1:04 is he doing a one handed break down?? WTF? or is this simply the single sync'ed to a studio TV take? ..oh I saw the end..the clip repeats...so a small bit remixed. Ok. haha.. sweet. Ventures rule. So is this before Mosrite?
ITS FUNNY how so many cynical comments like the one offered by Zblex appear here.,SOOO people arent allowed to have opinions, and does it matter how they express them, as long as they are sincere and WHO are you? the cliche police or something. Got this vinyl from my father, tresure rare to find, I was always get amazed with music "Ventures" could create without all the technology that we have now.
Fantastic group but a real shame about Howie Johnson, whose spinal injury forced his retirement from the band. The power and control that Howie, and later Mel Taylor, managed to achieve from those simple drum kit setups always amazed me. The later 1962 line-up with Nokie Edwards on lead guitar never lost any of the Ventures drive either. Wonderful to listen to and watch, The Ventures! Thanks so much for posting.
@tabooapl In your profile is says you're 30, not 15... I am three weeks old but I'm no fool (oh, and I also think the actual pop-trash is very much out of my style unlike the good old 60's R&B and early Motown)
@tabooapl I like them too, but most people at the time thought that this was pop trash. The tune happens to be by a very, very good jazz guitarist called Johnny Smith, but basically these guys were pop stars. They were not a serious band whose work people thought would last beyond the next hit record - nobody thought that then. Same as anyone you can think of right now. It goes to show that just Being Old has a big effect on how we listen to music. Even if this is pop trash, it's still great.

it is funny how the 2 best rated comments are meant to be cool but are now so "cliché" that they are boring
1st cliché : diss the 1 or 2 people who didn't like the song, by using the title of the song. (well i have to admit it is sometimes funny)
2nd cliché : i am young but listen to "good music, not pop trash"... ok so what ? you are like the 5000000000 people to say so, that's wonderful.
