What distinguishes V's musical genius over Jean michel Jarre who to me seemed a button pusher, is that the man can spend 5minutes building up a multidimensional wall of sound and then strip everything away to leave only a piano solo (as with the Long March to follow) without losing the majesty of the music.
Jarre is a show man, he has done some contributions but Vangelis IS a musician and a God. The music that Vangelis creates goes beyond time, it is always discovered every generation.
Just like Tomita and his performance in Austria (Live at Linz, 1984, Mind Of The Universe). Tomita "played" the music, from tape while he directed other aspects of the performance from a pyramid shaped control room hanging from a crane above the river. Nonetheless an awsome production.
I am a Vangelis fan pur sang...but this happening was a bit of a bore....I expected it to be as spectecular as a Jarre show but it was not......I taped the whole gig .....the fireworks were OK.....and besides.....99% was playback.......best part of the show? My zoom into the crowd leaving.....120000 people crossing the bridge...now THAT is spectecular.
I remember this piece was used in a Mercury Lynx commercial in 1980 when I was a kid. I loved that commercial because of this piece. It was so beautiful and haunting. Thanks for bringing back such wonderful childhood memories. :)
was this ever used in a bond movie or is that my imagination. got into this album just when i started doin oversized hash hotknives. go well hand in hand, fond memories.
When i use to do warm up DJ in London in the early 80s and at the start of Raves i use to play this i'd safely say i was the first to play it in a club in 81 with smoke and a Laser everyone thought i was mad but they asked for it everytime i turned up and then i starting playing Another one of VANGELIS's 'TO THE UNKNOWN MAN' the loved it too. . . haven't heard either in years....nice memories tho . .from what i can remeber :)
i think that today in the world besides pink floyd, vangelis is the man that has the most powerful material for a live concert, imagine a live versions of blade runner antarctica alpha conquest of paradise.... etc....but surely he don't need that kind of shows, he his well known for cuality and super beautiful melodies.....and he will be remenbered in that way....
HE IS playing live.Watch interviews here on you tube-his skill is AWESOME.He's using special layers on the keyboard and he is using pedals etc.but all is live.
Absolute rubbish. This is not live. Brass sound comes from Yamaha CS80 which is not present. Brass sound alone takes two hands to reproduce. Roland JD800 (top synth right hand) not switched on. Bass sound from Moog Modular which is not present. The biggest give away is the fact that the keyboard he's "playing" is not fucking switched on. Not surprising since it was soaking wet from all the Dutch rain and no doubt completely fucked or a shock hazzard. I could go on and on.
I completely have to agree with lochead1's sentiment. Think about it: it's raining; you really THINK they're gonna have a CS-80 AND a Moog Modulator onstage?? NO. They're gonna have 'em in their roadcases!!! Yes, Vangelis is a genius - both at cutting records, and playing - as well as protecting his equipment! A-B this video against the China studio version, and THEN tell me this is still live. Go on.
Hate to repeat myself, but it is well documented on various Vangelis websites that the majority of the music at this performance *was* pre-recorded, and he simply played along with it. The choir is live (obviously) as were Jon Anderson's vocals on a later song. But don't take my word for it. Look it up yourself.
"Live" my oversized left bollock. I'm glad nobody had to pay for this f*cking crap.
I dimmed the lights in my fat, bearded grandads back room, sat him in front of an ironing board, got him to flop his hands all over it, put the record on and got exactly the same effect. Bollocks.

Difficult to compare Jarre and Vangelis. I like both, but they have two different way of composing electronic music...
For me Vangelis is a classical composer using electronic instruments.
Jarre is an electronic composer. His music is based on electronic sounds since the beginning.
Both made great music (not the case nowadays, shame !)

Indeed. There is no way he or Tomita could have done all those layered tracks at once live anyway.
