I totally saw a Prat bass similar to this at Summer NAMM a few years ago. Can't remember if it was 10 or 11 string but it had an incredible appearance and tone. Being a guitarist I usually show more interest in guitars but man this bass was sick!
@brandon5pennies That is the Prat. He did another one. I was invited out there to Demo this bass for NAMM last year. I had never even seen a 12 string before that weekend =)
Not quite sure why the dislike bar is quite that high. I don't hear anything offensive in this it sounds great. People are purely judging this by how it looks, which is unusual of course. But in most cases music should be judged solely on it's sound? It's not like you're thrashing the lowest strings and simply having the high there for show, (7/8 string guitar players I'm looking at you) you're using it all. Anyway, keep up the good work buddy
@ainsleywalker I don't mind... Honestly, the fact that it's this high is really irrelevant to me. I actually forgot this video was n here. That bass is amazing. It sounded great there, even if the flipping Sound Fascists kept forcing me to turn everything down. I don't mind the way extended range guitar players play at all. So long as everyone is jamming and making music that isn't like the guy next to them I am always happy about the music d-_-b
@ShinigamiKusajika when you can play for the enjoyment of it & because it's something you like to do, regardless of how many people dislike... or like for that matter, it becomes a lot more fun to do! off subject, if you haven't seen Death Note (the animation) check it out.
@qddevine I play because I live and breathe for this instrument. The dislikes on this single video on my page doesn't even remotely affect me. Honestly, I attribute it to the sound more than anything.
Also, I have seen the anime, the live action, the movie, and the Manga of Death Note in both English and Japanese =)
@ainsleywalker Don't judge all of us 7/8 string guitarist like that, I bought my first 7 string to get more from it, Not to use the top half. Kind of a dick thing to say when you are talking about people judging then judge others in the process don't you think?
@AttitudeCastle It's funny that you mention that because this was the first time I had ever been, the first time I had ever been to California, and the first time I had ever played a 12 string.
@AttitudeCastle I was invited as a featured artist for Prat ( the bass I am playing. ) He had checked out one of my earlier 7 string videos and asked if I could play or had ever played something bigger to which I replied "of course" *cough cough*
@ShinigamiKusajika Dude, I think there is one in existence I believe and it's like the original version of "Highlander: There Can Be As Many As You Like". Not sure what it's called but it was for a buddy of mine's school project.
@delta9LouDog Thank you, homie. I hope that you get a chance to rock out to some of my other videos. They are a tad more indicative of what I do considering that this video is literally the first time I had ever even seen a 12 string bass, let alone attempt to play one.
@ShinigamiKusajika Yo man, I've been watching your videos and reading the comments and man, I really think you should make a video explaining your instrument or something. There seems to be a LOT of confusion and many people making ignorant assumptions about it, saying its basically a piano (wtf?) or a Chapman Stick, which is obviously false. I would also personally love to learn more about it as it seems so goddamn fascinating. Whenever you have free time man, no pressure :).
@SteveJawbs Dude, I like this plan. I will get on that for sure. I plan on doing a big description of my set up and get all of that in place for when my next bass is finished. I plan on explaining it all in the same way it was all explained to me when it was being built. Thank you for being one of the coolest cats on youtube and keeping it real with me. I appreciate all your support.
@anakin590 Nah, it's a bass. Chapman Sticks are designed to be played in an almost exclusive tapping sense. With an Extended Range Bass, it allows you to use all of the various techniques figured out for the instrument over the years since it's creation.
@LaGitania Not so simple as that. Remember, this is still a stringed bass. It can still be played as such or like a guitar or like a chapman stick or like a slap bass or like... (etc). Also, I cannot play piano to save my life. I've tried and failed horribly. Just doesn't make sense to me d-_-b
@CommitToFocus Not particularly accurate. It's meant to be played however you want it to play it, really. I use my 12 string for everything. Blues gigs, country gigs, jazz gigs, solo gigs, "guitar" gigs and I'm even going to start working on my piano like chops. The instruments are for you to have options =)
@abinopod I think you have hit the nail on the head there dude. Its not a bass, this is a stringed instrument with notes that are also on a bass guitar. Fair play to all the dudes who rock it (those sounds are like no other I have ever heard!), but it should not be called a bass guitar.
I never liked these kinds of basses because almost all the 8+ string basses seem to sound the same.. and bland sounding too.. like a cheap 1 jazz pickup ibanez tone-wise... nice idea great craftsmanship ... horrible tones.
@F3FisGoodforYou ,It's a shame really.. If you pick up any decentish ibanez bass like a normal low soundgear and play the bridge pickup ... thats pretty much the tone of almost every single 8+ string bass i have ever listened to. They dont have the same variety in sound as the normal 4,5's and 6's though even 6's are limited in what you can and cant get tonally .. 7's are few and far between tone wise but still some variation.. once you get upto 8 .. its all downhill for tonal variety.
@woodros Why wouldn't you be able to get your left to the lower strings? It's actually surprisingly easy if you play in good form. The only issue is that most speakers don't register the lowest notes.
@woodros apples and oranges, my friend. We're all just into fruit. There's nothing novelty about this instrument to me I do solo gigs, r&b gigs, jazz sets, and a couple country spots around town. I like having as many options as I can. I do still have a 4 string and I have U-Bass but the 12 from my other videos is my main bass, for sure. It's a tad different from this one in tuning and the fact that it has a headstock =)
I believe that this instrument is the standard Prat Tuning start at a low B and tuned in 4ths the whole way up.(B, E, A, D, G, C, F, A#, D#, G#, C#, F, if I'm not mistaken.
