For all the idiots who think this is "actual" self-defense training, you are REALLY ignorant. This is just a flow drill, a way for escrimadors to exercise their dexterity and refllexes. If it were actually self-defense, then they could finish it in 1 or 2 moves, EASILY. So yeah, this is not realistic, but then again its a FLOW DRILL, a type of EXERCISE!
Excellent teacher too.. as he purposely offered the same attack 4 times so that the student could practice his counter (empty hand pressing down on this X-block) .. and then he switched it up the 5th time!
Pokerman is right! They are just playing games. No more. It is not possible to defend real and agressiv knife attacks in this way. Only good trained Drills, but for reality nothing worth. A bad concept.
@Gunner1992 you're right, but this is what happens when you have 2 FMA pratitioners in a sport-like environment. When it is in a self-defense scenario, the one who knows FMA can usually end it in a single counter. Its kinda like JJJ.
@AznInvazn69Theory O.K. I hope I understand you. But, all the time you can see knife drills in this close range. I understand this as a typical concept of Balintawak.
In my opinion, you don't need to train this situation much often, because there is no real chance for both. I would like to see the concept from a "normal" distance and your way to survive.
@Gunner1992 I'm glad you understand. But this type of flow drill is for for reflex and awareness training. There are other types of flow drills and training methods( like live sparring) to simulate actual self-defense scenarios. And this isn't normally the type of distancing when in an actual fight, obviously. It takes a while for a combatant to tell a person's rythm and reach to predict a safe distance. But then again, balintawak isn't my area of expertise. Personally, I take Doce Pares.
@AznInvazn69Theory doce pares sucks baby! i could take your sticks in just simple moves. so stop bragging! perhaps you don't know how to attack or defend yourself with a knife! thats the actual distance i you want to have an advantage for you to counter easily! stupid noobs with a big mouth!
hey dude, apparently u have no idea of training against knife attacks.
this is just one aspect of a real fight. here u train a kind of "handfight" that could happen. in another aspect u train big movements and and add punching. u might be a good puncher, but if someone comes with "little cuts" at you in places u cannot do big movements you have to fight like this. big movements in small places make no sense, due to tha lack of space and power. have no effect, due to the lack of power.
@MrPokerman5250 flow drills( most of them) aren;t supposed to be realistic. They are for training reflexes, awareness, and ambidexterity. If you can't see that, then I seriously look down on you.
How much knife training is included in the Atillo Balintawak curriculum? Is it a fully developed knife style within the curriculum, or more like a collection of "drills" that are included within the Atillo system?
This drill doesn't looks quite different from the drills I was taught by my instructor. This looks like one of the drills you can find in the PTK system and other similar Escrima styles. Did you guys incorporate these drills into your base escrima system? or is it included already in your teacher's curriculum?
Filipino Martial Arts where used since Spaniard and Japanese Invasion....too bad most of the Filipino martial arts where influenced by Japanese martial arts....so meaning.. what you have witnessed is not the genuine version of FMA...Genuine versions of F.M.A where kept hidden in the shadows and where passed down generations to generations......and sad to say....F.M.A is not really for showing and sporting....its for instantly disabling and killing an opponent, so what can you expect frm this eh?
i hate to criticize but i see a flaw. what if i didnt play nice and started slicing you forearms right off of your defense by turning my wrist. i mena to say that is what i would do. no offensei just want to know
you will get cut no doubt about it...but there is a flaw in any system of FMA knife work. as long as there are counters to counters you will always be playing catch up. the key may be sensitivity and recognition, timing and positioning. you won't get that all explained to you in a 2 1/2 minute clip. time to take a class.
this true in many cases and certain aspects of kung fu explain and train these attributes till one is blue in the face. yet, i have seen some old dudes on the utube practice these techniques straight off by grasping the forearm and simultaneously warding the guide hand. the purpose is without a doubt clear as you dont block a knife with your forearm.
do you mean block (or deflect) with the forearm palm up to pass the blade? you see that alot in the fma. maybe the guys in that clip would rather grab the forearm/wrist and parry with their other hand to monitor and maybe disarm right away...but then the opponent counters quickly and it continues. of course, this is just a drill and they haven't thrown in split focus shots (eye spears, punches, maybe even spitting, hehe). their grabbing and ward can be a gunting if there's a full follow through.
you cant block i believe but deflect is good yet to control the attacking arm i believe is best. the other arm as an means to implement simultanoeus attack and defense from both parties. drills are useful if they practice practicallity and effectiveness. its a tool that promotes free response without routine proceedure that limits and confines as it does not account for unknowns; its "real time". were on the same page.
it is a training regimen so one's reflex will be trained in many different scenario. in a real knife fight, your oppenent would not eb as cooperative as a training partner. it would be a one hit, one defense move. knife fighting is not that easy & being in martial art does not necessarily gives you a win over a fight, but atleast an edge.
thats pretty much what i have been saying. yet, when i train none of my training partners are cooperative. in fact we would be cheating each other if you just whent along for the ride. so this is not a problem in the system to which i train and teach.
I feel that once the basics are understood, then speed kills....
