  • My eyes weld up when I hear the talent of yesterday and how mainstream music has become less of an artform and more of a sideshow to make a quick buck. Name one mainstream artist that can sing like this?! Remember, I said MAINSTREAM.

  • Billie Holiday is a girl??????

  • @ximnotDISTURBEDx ....yes.

  • @ximnotDISTURBEDx *facepalm*

  • 7 people have absolutley no taste whatsoever >:(

  • i want a time machine....

sit in a smoke filled bar, order a shot of whiskey and listen to this... damn you XXI century!

  • Fritz the mother fuckn cat.

  • @William6likes6Rock that's what brought me here lol

  • It's absolutely from god's world !

  • Wonderful -

  • How I wish Billie Holiday was alive, playing tonight down the street at the local concert hall and I had tickets..........

  • Bouleversant de beauté ! qui sait encore chanter lentement avec autant d' intensité ?

  • @SmokeAlexOut i say that every single day, but not just for Billie for Valeda Snow, Bessie Smith and so many other legends clumped in that era of jazz and swing

  • I wish i was born back in the swing era just so i could of heard her live.

  • @SmokeAlexOut I know - ain't it the truth. Seeing Billie live would have been AMAZING.

  • these 6 people who had problem with this song are not of earth.

  • why are there ads? This isn't your song!

  • @mabiniss2 Youtube puts ads on there. I don't have any control over it. The money goes to the owners of the song, as far as I know - I don't get anything. I'm just a fan who loves Billie.

  • I saw your swinging reunion with Mr. Lester Young on live television when I was a youngster, about 3 or 4, and I was impressed. I saw Elvis Presley, too, and he was cool, as was Buddy Holly, but I fell in love with you.rh

  • Fritz the cat

  • This is by far one of the best recordings of Billie that I have heard. Thank you for sharing. I have always loved the subtle way she moves through the music. :)

  • I WANT TO WEAR MY GOWN, AND GLOVES AND SEE BILLIE LIVE!!!!

  • Her beauty has been extremely ignored. It amazes me how people do not refer to her beauty as much as her thrilling singing. But, regardless, her talent is raw and real. People are too bewitched by her voice to notice her stunning face. Just seems a shame to overlook the whole package.

  • @MulattoSingsTheBlues - That's hilarious, considering the music industry has been so corrupted today into a VISUAL medium that all the media talk about is how someone looks and dresses. Funny...

  • The inibitable Miss Holiday! She knew the heartaches love can bring along with it.There'll NEVER be another Billie.Never. As an aside,I know exactly what "phaasch" means about the first time he/she heard this. I was in my senior year of high school when "Lady Sings the Blues" was released. I started the record player, listened for a minute or two and could not go to school. I was overcome, mesmerized and completely in love with that raspy, but sweet voice.Quite something for an 18yo white boy!

  • the ad on this video is tasteless and disrespectful to billie's song.

  • @veronicahayworth - I think a different ad pops up each time. Right now I'm looking at an ad for "Jazz Drumming Legends." You must have seen something else. I'm not sure what kind of algorithm Youtube uses to determine which ads pop up on which video. As the person who posted this video, I have no control over what ads Youtube/Google inserts.

  • @veronicahayworth

    Don't flatter yourself bubs

  • her voice is epic

  • First time I heard this was in a car one night a few years back, Had to pull over as I found I could no longer drive- felt like the breath had been knocked out of me. It still has the same effect, A raw, gut- wrenching cry from the heart

  • that voice god given forsure it say,s it all !!!

  • It's unbelievable..how her music was so together.....short lived...as she was high most of the time she was singing...I love watching her videos...

  • grande amore mio

  • billie, i love you.

  • Such a truely beautiful voice, Wont hear something like this anymore.

  • she is so good

  • I sometimes feel uncomfortable listening to the soulful voice of this troubled singer. But hearing her sing about 'Yesterdays' is so sad it's beautiful.

  • @laswilliam Yeah! I know what your saying. It seems sometimes Billie give vocals to tears.

  • "Yesterday, yesterdays, days I knew as happy sweet sequestered days/Olden days, golden days, days of mad romance and love/Then gay youth was mine, truth was mine/ Joyous free and flaming life then sooth (sic) was mine/Sad am I, glad am I/ For today I dreaming of, yesterdays." Note correct lyrics. Also, listen to the later recording on Verve with Oscar Peterson on the organ. Supreme!

  • Yesterdays Days are new as happy sweet Sequestered days Olden days Golden days Days of mad romance and love Them gay youth was mine Truth was mine Join us be in flame and live Then sooth was mine Sad and mired Glad and mired For today I'm dreamin' of Yesterdays
  • Wow.

  • "Days of bad romance and love"

haha, looks like Lady Gaga wasn't the first to sing it!

  • @debraandsusiehair Wot? Lady Gaga's the best thing over 100 years! &, say, did you recognize any Beatle's song? AH !

( Hey, who said " retard"?)

  • @debraandsusiehair "Days of mad romance and love..."

  • Billie's music has been copied so much that I didn't know the original version sounded like this! EXCELLENT!!!!!!!

  • yep, my very favorite of billie's as well, this version

i'd comment more, but others here have already said it better than i ever could. Thank you for posting this exquisite and timeless music, BFAS

  • How could she sing this song in different ways and always perfectly, in different moods, with different arrangements and musicians,a younger and then a mature voice, first like here, clear as crystal and then with a deep, strong, devastating much more than devastated voice, like in 52... she's the perfection still searched for, yet never to be found again, most likely. Live for ever in our ears, hearts and souls, Lady.

  • @sapfeiros

Billie Holiday once said that she tries to not sing a song the same way and this reveals another side of her musical talent and genius mind at structuring a song. She was a genius at what she did going into the heart of a song and pulling out things that no other sing has done, though the song has been sung lots of times. There will never be another Billie Holiday because she was unique in itself and contributed alot to jazz and to music as a whole.

  • great, i like her '52 version more though.

  • I love this song. And Billie Holiday's pretty.

  • thank goodness the guitar replaced the very irritating banjo "chunking"

  • gets under my skin

  • Fantastic. Subtle yet so, so powerful!

  • wow she didn't go up the scale as the score/melody originally called for

  • Five Stars!!

  • Billie when she was at her best, simple and soulful. The recording itself was poor and she didn't have ideal accompaniment, except for Sonny White on the piano, with an excellent interpretation of the Kern classic. Still, the rawness of the recording itself is charming. This is my favorite of all of her recordings, which is why I looked for it here.

  • wow esta cancion es hermosa :D

  • there will be no other talent that captures the soulful emotion of heartache as fine as the mesmerizing voice of the great Billie Holiday!

  • only 4,000 views

    sad

almost as sad as this song :( so beautiful

  • What year was this version recorded i wonder?

  • @SearchForTomorrow

    April, 1939.

  • We miss you, Miss Billy Holiday... Your music was a great inspiration for my love of Old Jazz!

    R.I.P.

  • Appreciation for your sharing this classic moment in time captured...

  • wow !! ... this is a real lament... beautiful, thanks !!

  • R.I.P Sister girl

  • Never insult Billie by comparing her to the Beatles. It takes someone with an emotional musical brain to appreciate Billie. It doesn't take much to enjoy some Beatles tunes.
