  • Must get me bike out

  • Aan de like/dislike te zien kan 1 iemand niet fietsen...

Seen by the likes/dislikes i conclude that 1 person can't ride a bike...

  • Wonderful! I'm going to ride my bike a lot more!

  • Does anyone recognise which city/cities theses were filmed in?

  • 1:48 zo'n mandje zat ik ook in!

1:48 I was placed in a basket like that!

  • LOVE IT..No it is not like the movies,,many of us was and still is beautiful transportation...THANK YOU FOR VIDIO ...

  • It looks like in the movies

  • You had me at the clogs!

  • Hey, a french velocar at 1:41 ! It's a shame, ours stupid french politics promote almost only the cars here... *_*

  • @karlstade Indeed, the Netherlands got in Europe the least traffic deaths so i guess we're doing just fine :)

  • Wow, great video!

  • Is there old bicycle clubs which are sentimental towards the bikes of the past similar to the emotional attachment to older cars here in north america?

  • Zoals gezonde en levendige people. The wereld is veranderd en dus hebben we.

  • Those Dutch bikes can have people holding their handlebars as they're really stable. I rode around Amsterdam for the first time in many visits last year and it was great, even though I was well toasted and cycling slowly.

  • Here in Greece we are at least 60+ years behind this!

  • the 50s was a very sketchy time period, just sayin

  • Did you notice all of the fat overweight people riding those bicycles............?

    Yeah, me neither :)

    Great piece of film

    Domo!

  • I wish America was like this... More Bicycles...

here in Southern California, fixed gears are booming but we still lack bicycle lanes and bicycle friendly environment.

    This is great!

  • Another good video, I liked the "Ermi" icecream "bakfiets at the start of the film, one like that used to come round our street in Ridderkerk where I was born!

  • @ 4:39 i saw several scenes where riders hold the others handlebars? Any particular reason? Seems kinda crazy.

  • This video documents bike riders 50 years ago.

The Netherlands still has more bikes than people and fewer cars than families.

  • !Iride my bike 10km one way to work all year round, my coworkers who pay $150 a month for parking think I'm the crazy one???

  • So wonderfull to see, all the little wooden carts behind the bycicles for the children, and the most unconfortable shoes, the clogs. But couldn't they do wheelies in the 50's?

I am proud to cycle everyday and am happy not to have a helmet on. Most of the time you fall on your side or back, almost never on your head. Only if you ride a mountain bike, but you alsmost can't call that a bike.

  • @Alia749 no, you DO fall on your head, at least, when a car hits your side and makes you fall sideways into the road, you do. I was wearing a helmet, luckily. I was quite happy to be doing so, trust me!

  • It's interesting to think that millions of Dutch families emigrated to other English speaking countries in hope for a better life around the filming of this movie clip.......People like myself. The grass seems always greener on the other side of the big pond. Now I look back and admire life back then the way it was.

  • @tobagotb10 You know?, I'll bet my long gone Dutch mom would say the same. She left Baarn in the '50s to go to the middle of Kansas for several years. I'll bet that was an eye opener. I remember Baarn as well from the '60s, a lot of it still like this movie. Those memories of another time that will never come again.

  • Thiis is Fantastic

  • i wonder how many kids wer killed by cracking their skulls after falling off their parents bicycle durrin this time

  • @101andrewj no more than today. Every Dutch kid is still on their parents bicycle and we still don't wear useless plastic hats in this country.

  • @markenlei Thank you so much...plastic hat is useless.. In America, folks think they are "safe" because they wear them. It's monkey business :-0

  • @markenlei Glad to learn that helmets are useless, guess all the people I know who avoided traumatic brain injuries thanks to wearing helmets would have been fine without them as well. I'll be sure to tell them, along with all professional cyclists.

  • @markenlei Glad ya'll have really hard heads then. Helmet saved my life!

  • @stopglobalswarming It's got nothing to do with hard heads. It's a matter of biking with common sense in a place that has well-designed infrastructure. Sure helmets may have helped some cyclist in certain accidents, but at some point you just have to make a compromise between practicality/comfort or 'safety.' Life is risky. There would be less injuries if people wore helmets using stairs or walking on sidewalks as well. But at some point, you got to question how necessary that really is.

  • @101andrewj A Hell of a lot less than died in car crashes in the USA during the same period.

  • @101andrewj the deaths from cycling accidents there is a rounding error compared to kids killed by motorists. The city of NY has 220 pedestrian and cyclist deaths at the hands of motorists in any given year. the numbers of people killed in cycling accidents isn't bit enough to tabulate.

  • @101andrewj Wel if you are raised with a bike you won''t fall

  • @101andrewj - not many, that's auto industry spin creating the 'fear'. You have fallen for one of last centuries great lies.

  • @quzzy21 Bikes are still massively used in that country. I was there for a short period this year and there is a strong bicycling road infrastructure.

  • Mooie beelden hoor!

    Héle mooie auto's!

Ik zag een oud volkswagenbusje op 3:18 die ik in de toekomst gewoon moet hebben!

  • I noticed 2 things:

    1) more bikes then cars on the road

    2) twice as many people got where they were going and enjoyed it more then those in cars!

    3) any ?'s on what "rules the road"

  • wish the USA was like this

  • Yes this is how it was in de goeie ouwe tijd

  • Thanks for a really well produced video! Things must have been lots safer back then, no hemets were required.

  • Wow, that brought up some fine memory's from my early youth. (like the "olieman" with his yelling on the streets) Thanks for uploading!

  • wonderful life , good health and happy people i fell in a more natural world, may be poorer than today but richer in nature

  • !!!Maravilloso!!!

    Bike's Sangri-Lah

    ;))))

  • A perfect world indeed. And yet, all our parents were so happy once they could afford their first car and not get wet in the rain and not be a poor person on a bicycle anymore.

  • What a lovely film. I suspect many of the bicycles featured are still in use today - it is certainly a possibility.

  • The image of American women being beautiful is a joke... Wow Dutch women ARE beautiful! Add all the pollution killing brain cells, Dutch women are smarter, too.

  • I had to chuckle at the "petroleum truck" around 2:43. Imagine carrying fuel to cars by bicycle!

  • @WestLABoy Petroleum in Dutch means that this was used for cookers, heaters and lamps. We call petrol for cars 'benzine'.

  • That back carrier basket at 1:45 - 1:50 !

my mother biked around with me in one of those when i was a baby in the early seventies.

  • Does anyone else feel we've lost some of the wonder since then? Loverly film, shows cycling in an urban environment to be friendly, fun and convenient

  • heaven on earth,.

  • The perfect world!

  • heaven.

  • That was completely delightful!

    Thanks so much for sharing.

  • The really cool thing is that most of those bikes are still being used today!

  • Brilliant video! What fun!

  • paradise!

  • Er zit ook ouder materiaal tussen en oudere muziek.

Ach ja, toen Nederland nog leuk was.

  • WOW

  • 2:15 light rail/bus lanes in the middle, bicycles on the sides...beautiful. only ambulances, firetrucks, police/military, and elite figures are allowed to use the road, in which case cyclists should shift the side to make way. police would minimize their use of cars, they're likely to be the more abundant than all 3. deliveries/mail takes place overnight, night riders stick to the side. cheapest, cleanest, most efficient, most enjoyable, this is what urban city core transport should have been..

  • I <3 Holland.

  • Fabulous video, Mark.
