  • Wait!!! Mormons read Margaret Barker's works? I am in shock. Any Mormons agree with her concept of a henotheistic Israel, a Josiah purge, and a Deuteronomy-reform of the concept of angels and the temple? I agree with a lot of her studies simply because the agree with the Qumran text.

  • Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but here is one Mormon who does believe, for the most part, in her thesis of a pre-exilic henotheisitc, or monolatrous, Israelite religion, Josian reforms, and ties with 1st Temple theology to pre-exilic and early Christian beliefs.

Many other LDS scholars likewise agree with Barker's conclusions.

  • Nope, not being sarcastic. They even covered the idea the Israelites were not fully monotheistic until sometime during the Babylonian exile in a PBS documentary THE BURIED SECRETS OF THE BIBLE.

  • Gotcha. It was kind of hard to tell. :^)

It is the scholarly consensus that the early Israelites weren't monotheists as we define the term. In fact, such a concept of monotheism as we understand it didn't exist in the minds of the early Hebrews. They were undoubtedly monolatrous or henotheistic in their views. So you are dead right in that regard.

  • It is rather interesting that the early Muslims understood the concept that Judaism was not the religion of Abraham. I might read her book soon on Temple Theology when I start to study Mormonism more in depth to see if I see a link between her understanding of temples and Joseph Smith's understanding of what a temple is.

  • Kevin Christensen has written some articles showing the pertinence of Barker's research when it comes to Mormonism. See his "Paradigms Regained: A Survey of Margaret Barker's Scholarship and its Significance for Mormon Studies" published by FARMS and available for free on the FARMS website.

  • I just found a few MP3s taken from the 2005 WORLDS OF JOSEPH SMITH. The second lecture, Margaret Barker gives the second speech. I am going to download that and listen to it. Also, another question... I am researching 7 churches and their theology and the LDS Church is one. Any great resources that would help introduce me into Mormon theology?

  • Shoot me a Personal Message and we'll talk about good books introduction LDS theology.

For now, I will say that the "Worlds of Joseph Smith" talks are fantastic! BYU has published a book version of these talks if you wish to have a copy in print.

  • Blake T. Ostler, "Of God and Gods" is an excellent LDS text on the "number" and of God, and interacts with Deut 32:7-9 (the DSS rendition), etc.

  • Ding Ding! Wow you won a prize! I also subscribe to the notion that the earliest jews and the prophets understood God differently than do Jews today.

  • I highly recommend their book "Solomon's Temple: Myth and History" published in 2006 by Thames and Hudson Books. Top notch!
