  • Great video. Ridden the South Shore many times. Love its history and the fact that it is still going strong. A nice alternative when going to Chicago for the day.

  • Great video. Thanks.

  • Indiana Transportation Museum has a south shore car that still has "the little train that could"

  • I live in South Bend and mom and dad and I would take the South Shore to Michigan City on a hot Saturday and walk from the downtown station to the beach. Ride her home at the end of the day. Took her to Chicago a lot too. Oh those were the days! If you want some good reading and pictures, find a book called "The Spirit of the South Shore." Takes you through the entire history of the line.

  • love the little joes

  • love the little joes

  • runs from Chicago to the Airport in South Bend,In. now......used to go downtown through the streets like Michigan city........I rode it back in the 60`s to the Auto show at McCormick place.

  • great video . I use to live in hammond/ hegewisch area ,,now I live in orlando,, and I make the trip up north just to ride this train,,,enjoy this very much,, I miss the old car's.. An era gone but never forgot

  • The old South Shore cars remind me a lot of the old Reading "Blue" MU cars built about the same year. Both types had arch roofs, the same pans, same horns (WABCO AA-2), and the Blues were about the same length as the "stretches" @ 72 ft. Plus 5 "Blue" former combines also had picture windows and air conditioning like South Shore's modernized cars while 5 others got air conditioning but kept their original windows. The remaining 28 "Blues" never received air conditioning nor picture windows.

  • I forgot to mention that the prices are very easy on your budget Steve

  • I have lots of greenfrog videos I love them all especially the vintage stuff I am glad all those photographers were there to get this great footage or it would have been lost to time. Thanks Steve

  • Any of you out there live in the Chicagoland area?Want to try to start some sort of local club and get together once or twice a year to ride NICTD? Just asking.

  • 近鉄のモ2200を彷彿させますね。

  • @zyma01 なるほど、言われて見れば。日本の電車技術の殆どはアメリカが源流なんで、そこら辺を参考にしたんではないでしょか。

  • Very, very cool. Thank you Greenfrog!

  • The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) now operates the South Shore passenger service, still running from South Bend to Chicago and busier than ever these days. Search "NICTD" for fare and schedule information.

  • Who owns this line today? Still a commuter line?

  • to cjb761. I do not live in Chicago any more, but only about 30 miles north, lake county,Ill. I plan to drive down some Sat or Sun, park my car and take a double deck train to and from Michigan city just for fun. I used to vacation and know my way around till the return trip to Randolph St. I can"t wait to ride one.

  • Get ready, double decker cars are on the test track. Highliners just like on the Metra. I can't wait to ride one on the South Shore.

  • I just saw one for the first time pulling out of Millennium Station fully loaded. I had no idea that they had double decker cars. They looked good.

  • Great video, From gosshore.

  • i wrote a report on american interurban railways development for college history classroom. Much impressive was this southshore line.

  • What a fantastic video. I used to see the South Shore trains when I traveled on Amtrak's now-defunct International (Toronto-Chicago) which paralelled the South Shore between Michigan City and Hammond.

I've only actually ridden on the South Shore once: in 1990 from Chicago to that vacation paradise, Hammond. The one thing that sticks in my mind was when the doors were opened, there was a continuous door-bell chime: ding dong ding dong ding dong.

  • Vacation paradise ? what the fuck are you talking about?

  • I believe that comment was supposed to be ironic

  • At 4:06. Moron almost gets done in.

  • Thanks for putting this video on YouTube. It brings back some memories for me. I grew up on the south side of Chicago and sometimes we had to ride the South Shore trains to travel because we either couldn't afford a car or they hadn't finished building all of the Interstate highways yet.

  • Grew up in the 50's on the CSS&SB RR. Spent my summers in the dunes. Will never forget Tremont Station. Snacks and news papers everyday for riders. Ahead of its time...park & ride is all over the country now. My favorite, the cars with the wide picture windows. 70 MPH in air conditioned comfort.

  • I used to vacation near Michigan City. I also liked the air conditioned cars better than the older push up windows cars. Those were really bad and falling apart worse than the rebuilt ones.

  • We need more railroads like this one.

  • pretty cool. just learned about these.
