So is it possible to do very long commutes on these in reasonable time? How far could you get in two hours on one of these?

I suppose a helmet always helps whatever you ride.
Recumbents position however makes the risk of head injury if you crash a lot lower than on normal bikes.

Ye as I said, helm always helps. :)
But its more important to drive safe and take care, just becuse you got a helmet on doesnt mean your invincible.
Or like this guy says, its more important to ride your bike instead of your car than to have a helm when riding your bike.
