Technically, that's a "Yellowbonnet." The "Bluebonnets" were passenger F-units that had the red Warbonnet painted over in blue and were used in freight service.
@metraF40PH163 I've contacted YouTube to find out what happened to the audio. This is the second video of mine that I know of that has lost all audio!!!!
I'm a BNSF conductor on Wy. And both and engineer and myself get out at the same time, and he takes the reverser out. And we've done the food run several times. What I was referring to is the General Code Pf Operating Rules ( which it was pointed out to me NS dosent use) Rule 1.28: Crews must operate trains and engines safely and efficiently, avoiding unnecessary delays. When possible, train crews wanting to stop the train to eat must ask the train dispatcher at least 1 hour 30 min before the d
@deme7061 train crews can stop and get food as long as the dispatcher gives them permission and they ask at least 10 min in advance. They take the reverser with them when they leave the cab, and yes the doors can lock to a certain extent, and if that's not enough, they can always apply had brakes.
@jaredkelly930 Not sure what line you're use to seeing that on , jaredkelly930, but here the crew does not have to ask permission to stop for food and, in fact, never do. If the train isn't running behind due to delays, and there is plenty of time to stop, then they can. As for "taking the reverser", they don't do that either. Most time the engineer will stay on the train while the conductor and/or fireman exit the train for the food, then, they'll swap up with the engineer.
@stagmie On our Railroad (TLE&W) if there is no crew member in the cab we take the reverser with us. If there is a crew member in the cab we don't. Neat video! Odd Railroad crossing.
@stagmie Do you work for NS, you sure don't sound like you do. Probably the only time a crew wouldn't ask to stop is if they were in TWC dark territory w/ or w/o DTC, because the DS can't see them and they are being sneaky. Now ABS, CTC, or whatever they're running over there, if you stop, you better tell the DS or they'll be calling up wondering why you haven't knocked down the next signal etc, then you're delayed w/in a block and restricted to RS until next block.
@est86leo You have NO IDEA what you're talking about.....so I'd suggest you don't speak at all. I've been watching this line my whole life (47 years). I KNOW what I'm talking about!
@stagmie So you don't work for NS, okay that answers that question. I work as a conductor for BNSF, and yes, I do know what I'm talking about. That other conductor, Jaredkelly930 knew what he was talking about too. I've worked on foreign lines on interchanges and shared track, and rules are rules, NS, BNSF, CN, CP etc. You've seemed to picked up on other crews bad habits and adopted them as what you think is right.
been a railfan for years but by no means an expert. can anyone "in the know" comment on how a crew can stop thousands of dollars worth of freight on a time table I'd assume and just get off their train? Do they lock the cab? I mean I know they got to eat, but just seems stange like a pilot and copilot pushing autopilot and going back to watch the inflight movie. maybe this is more common than I realize. the horn is definitely cool!!!! wish they had really poured the power to her @ startup
It's a through train, and, like my description of the video says, it was stopped so the crew could get supper at the Piggly Wiggly. Westbounds through here do that alot.
Was this a local or a road train? I'm wonder because I was confused as to why he was stopped on single track unless he was right behind something. Very cool horn also, that was a long crossing there.I'm surprised the city has put gates or even flashers there.
Stagemie, where do you live in AL? Just wondering. (Alex City, Goodwater, etc) Because of most of your videos were taken in AL, I decided to ask. I live in Hoover, AL (10 min drive from Birmingham).
Me too but I guess the traffic signals are linked with the crossing...but they still should have atleast lights there since it appears to have a lot of traffic...
Back when I was 17 working at McDonalds there was a SF (now BNSF) track next to the place and the switcher engineers would stop and get a bite to eat on almost a nightly basis.
100% agreement w/ what previous comment says! Good description also, nice to see an explanation of the movie! Neat, so they actually stop the train sometimes an have breakfast at a restaurant?
Oh yes, happens all the time. The Piggly Wiggly, a chain of small town grocery stores, has an excellent deli! All the NS train crews are aware of it and stop by almost on a daily basis. All West bounds though, no East bounders, as this would block the many crossings through town. East bound trains will stop in Goodwater and get food either from the In-And-Out C-Store or the BP Stations Deli's.

I didn't even know Norfolk and Southerns ran with Santa Fe locos in tandem like that. Pretty cool!
CarCrazy12804 5 years ago
Them NS SD70's have some nice sounding horns on them. Not unlike there C40-9W brethren. Nice vid, keep 'em comin'.
Jerzrailfan 5 years ago
I didn't know Norfolk Southerns (or any trains) left their ditch lights flashing like that even if they sat still
lotusbandicoot 5 years ago
They don't normally. The engineer had just hit the horn, which you probably know activates the ditch lights, just before I started the video.
stagmie 5 years ago
I guess I like horns a lot more since I left that comment. Awesome horn!
