"If you have a case of two men drawing their weapons against each other — or a situation in which someone is likely to be killed — that is the wrong kind of action. We can find our action in all sorts of arguments and dangers that don’t involve death."
--Gene Roddenberry (creator of the stun setting), during his 1991 interview with The Humanist
"We don't put civilians at risk or even potentially at risk to save ourselves. Sometimes, that means we lose the battle and sometimes our lives, but if you can't make that choice, then you can't wear that uniform."
--Captain Sisko
... when our real life armed forces adhere to such a heroic standard, the world will be a much better place and I'll finally be able to celebrate the Fourth of July ...
kailmek, suck my big black cock ... Knock out gas usage instead of bombarbment, asshole! As in, doN'T bomb a town with civilians! I NEVER said a damn thing about one plane against another.
"you can't regulate what the opponent would have"
No shit, but SO WHAT? If you want to be called a hero (as those in the armed forces do), then such status must first be EARNED and going up against tremendous odds will do the trick. Besides, if you knock someone out, it doesN'T matter WHAT they're armed with.
By the way, Vietnam and Iraq were both based on LIES (Gulf of Tonkin, Weapons of Mass Destruction), so having "a lot of your people dieing for absolutely nothing," as you put it, is NOTHING new. At least MY way they die with HONOR.
"Vast improvement," my black ass! A vast improvement would be limiting the armed forces to NON-lethal weaponry (Can we say stun setting?). Knock out gas instead of bombs during aerial combat, and so forth.
@TheGreenVoter The problem with such an idea is simple: you can't regulate what the opponent would have.
If your forces take to the field of battle with non-lethal weaponry when their opponents are packing lethal weapons will just result in a lot of your people dieing for absolutely nothing.
And that's ignoring your idiocy regarding knock-out gas usage in aerial combat. How are you going to get that into the opponent's cockpit, and then, how the fuck is he supposed to land when he's out cold?
@TheGreenVoter Officially, yes but collateral damage from US airstrikes alone in Iraq were in the thousands and even the surgical drone strikes have caused about 50 civilian fatalities although this is in comparison to about a thousand enemy combatant kills over 10 years, which is a vast improvement.
"gamesmaster35," get this through your thick skull ...
"We don't put civilians at risk or even potentially at risk to save ourselves. Sometimes, that means we lose the battle and sometimes our lives, but if you can't make that choice, then you can't wear that uniform."

... even if a civilian craft had a cloak, SO WHAT? Civilians are off limits, period. Starfleet adheres to a higher moral standard -- clearly a better one than YOU'RE used to ...
@TheGreenVoter Even Western militaries adhere to many of these rules and they still cause civilian casualties. The rule is if you pull the trigger, it becomes your fault not theirs.
Thank you for posting this. I think Sisko is at his best when he is trying to convery his beliefs to his crew in a scolding way like at 1:15 "You're damned right you should have checked!" He just comes across so intense it is so dramatic.
I couldn't believe he berated Worf for this. What business does a civilian craft have going through a warzone! Number two why would a civilian craft need a cloak? It didn't make any sense unless they wanted to be attacked.Maybe Sisko just ran out of Raktogeno(sp?)
Rashaed, thanks for posting this great scene. I wish I own all the DVDs too, especially TNG and DS9. My two favorite captains are Picard and Sisko, which says a lot about Avery Brooks as an actor because I didn't think anybody could even get close to Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard. And I agree with those who said that DS9 is underrated.
Most folks who sign up do it for the money, so if we could just remove that motive; create eco-friendly jobs; a Greenpeace version of FDR's New Deal ...
The question is how do we make ALL real life soldiers as ethical as Starfleet officers?

... and that's why Starfleet is morally superior to the military-industrial complex. Then again, even the American military is better than a bunch of cavemen -- and that's exactly what we today are to those in the 24th century ...

No kidding when we think of the responsibilities placed on Captains in Star Trek. Sisko is basically the Governor of the whole border with Cardassia and more besides.
well, remember the wartime context during which in the pale moonlight takes place. The contradiction actually makes the character more interesting, in my opinion
This Sisko is so different from the Sisko in the Pale Moonlight! He contradicts himself! You should post this in response to Sisko's best moment from the pale moonlight!

I call BULLSHIT ... IF they did, Amnesty International would have a LOT less to do.
"Many of these rules?" How about ALL of them?

Granted, but if your choices are ...
a) follow the direct orders of a knucklehead
or
b) get sent to the brig/stockade
... then what?

Worf can be kind of a dick at times.
