I heard that Dorothy's shoes were actually silver in the original story - they were changed for the film to make them stand out. With it being only the second film to be made in Technicolor, some colours were easier to render than others - it took over a week to come up with a shade of yellow for the Yellow Brick Road that didn't look green on camera!

@manly427 Unfortunately it started even before the Wizard of Oz. Her mother was giving her amphetamines once she started working at MGM in 1936 and barbiturates to put her to sleep. The combination of the two plus the alcohol would stay with her until the day she died. In all fairness though, no one knew that they were the equivalent of what meth is today. If they knew, they most likely would've never given them to her.

Maybe graduation rates WERE higher, seeing as how many African Americans weren't able to attend school or even allowed.
