  • arch + gnome doesnt go together lol

    get xfce with xmonad

  • Call me old school, Stuck in the past, old timer, Whatever. I just can't stand Gnome 3.xx I can navigate faster, and easier with the old Gnome. Which Is what I am using. I like the looks better too.

  • @sdperez79 There are frontends to the built-in kernel firewall Iptables. I haven't explored them yet.

  • I just posted my new Gnome 3 Arch Linux video. Check it out.

  • I like Arch but I hate gnome 3/shell.

  • @scorici Word up. I can't say i like Arch, i'm using Debian, but that Gnome 3 sucker really gets me. I hope i find some alternative before Gnome 2 dies completely.

  • @Gugamon29 Hehe, glad to see another customer pleased with gnome3. I'm not using Arch as my main OS, I'm using Mint, that's because I can't get my printer to work with Arch and because I'm still in the gnome2 land and don't want to leave it.I use Isadora, based on Ubuntu 10.04 and I don't like Ubuntu but I like Debian even though it has some rough edges. Debian CUT might be my next OS but I was to lazy too check how it's doing so far, Debian stable it's to old for me.

  • @scorici Debian stable is allegedly "frozen" which is why it might seem old to you, and yet another reason why many debian people jerk from stable to Sid and Testing trying to get satisfaction. Yes, stable is a bit outdated, although you can still update it using variaty of methods and its still quite reliable i must tell ya. But yeah, i really had hard times setting it up having just unbelieavable kind of issues.Still, it's the only OS so far i can use.Next to Debian is opensuse for me

  • Yes +1 for link to wallpaper please, I love it

  • I should put up a new video of my desktop. Arch's wiki got changed around, so some things are harder to change (i.e. the "no bluetooth" extension is gone). I wish there were a centralized repository for all current extensions. Ubuntu has webupd8's ppa, but that's about it. Even so, if you're using Arch, you should be used to tweaking.

  • wow what an original idia - iphone on desktops... gnome idiots.

  • can it launch the shell from clicks on the desktop, and any mouse corner? i recall the top-left activation always feeling very laborious whenever i tried it, but its probably a simple thing to fix..

  • @walter0bz There's an extension for the top-right hot corner. I'm not sure of any others, though.

  • @mujicama - well thats a step in the right direction. another small point, I think horizontal layout is more ergonomic... it's weird, switching vertically gave an odd feeling.weird because it really shouldn't matter. I'd also like the desktop thumbnails to be permanently visible instead of sliding on. less movement and see more in one go. I should just fork the source code really :)

  • Would you recommend this for an old(ish) machine? Ran Ubuntu 11.04 fine without many hiccups.

  • @ZacharyGretzinger Definitely. LXDE would run great.

  • wow that's amazing :O well done

    better than my linux

  • Personally im not a big fun of this gnome. Its just me. Dont like the topbar and curves at the corners. I like the older gnome better.

  • I really didn't like GNOME 3 and Unity when they were first released to the public, but the way they are now, I can't even decide on which one I want to use. Guess I'll go with GNOME 3 for increased flexibility and for ease of installation on ArchLinux :)

  • WOW

  • Gnome 3 is really stunning and beautiful. What's the pros and cons of having ArchLinux over Ubuntu? I hear it's twice as fast but quite difficult to use and install.. what exactly is different between these?

Can a Linux newbie like me manage this?

  • @PavedStones Pros: way more customizable, especially with what programs/packages you use. It runs faster and you don't have to worry about distro-specific stuff like Ubuntu's Unity. Cons: it's an absolute bear to set up the first time. The beginner's guide is long as heck. Also, there are some customizations that are going to be very difficult to pull off. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. Watch the Linux Action Show review for a better idea on what to expect.

  • @PavedStones You can run gnome 3 on Ubuntu with the latest version (11.10) omgubuntu have done a pretty detailed walkthrough on how to install it. It is easy to install, and I find it much nicer to look at and use than the current Gnome 2 they use (unity). If you do it as soon as you install Ubuntu, if you don't like it or find incompatible you can just install it afresh!

  • @PavedStones One major plus for Arch is the fact that the standard Arch repo has pretty much every package you could ever want and once you install yaourt you have everything else. Before I installed Arch I tried Mint, openSUSE, and Pinguy but none of them really gave me what I wanted. After I got sick of Ubuntu's unity I caved in and tried to install Arch, the first time took me about 9 hours to get everything the way I wanted it due to my lack of knowledge of terminal commands.

  • @PavedStones I will say this though, once you read the beginner guide a few times and practice using a terminal for more of your tasks and wing yourself off of GUIs you will find that Arch is one of (if not the) best distro out there. Arch is exactly what you make it, you build from the ground up with everything you could ever want, you just need to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXPLICITLY AND NOT SKIP STUFF LIKE ME. The install is not too bad, you just need to know ahead of time what drivers you need

  • Gnome 3 is godawful

  • @takoylhsopensource It seems your scared ass closed there account but why?

  • @takoylhsopensource I talked about something and a physco left a comment right? "You talk about something and always a psycho leaves a comment."

  • @takoylhsopensource Theres wine and alternitives to kompozer. THink before you type dipshit.

  • sucks

  • @takoylhsopensource The whole point of linux is that it's open. If it doesn't do something that you want, you're 100% free to change it to do that.

The only reason large apps like adobe suite etc. aren't made for linux/gnu is that there's a tiny market share because most users can't be bothered to look further than what comes pre-installed with their computer (either Windows or OSX)

Btw you can run most windows programs (including photoshop, office etc.) perfectly fine through wine.

  • @takoylhsopensource: If by "serious application" you mean the kind of software you have to pay for then you probably need to recheck your definition of "serious application." There are many different software choices out there and I'm sure you haven't exhausted the list. For a video editor try PiTiVi. For a web design app try looking at Amaya or any of the other huge amount of IDEs out there. Kompozer might not be for you but that's why you've got choices.

  • @takoylhsopensource Since Linux is so open, finding software that does everything you want it to can be a challenge. It has a kind of "jack of all trades, master of none" feel. With enough research though, I've been able to find solutions to most of my software needs. It's unfortunate that distros are so gimped by proprietary software and limited/slow/discontinued support. I think Linux is decent for standard home use, but it's a draw for people that enjoy tinkering and customization.

  • @mujicama I work with computers professionally and at first I thought similarly to you, but as time went on I found more and more open-source programs that beat or equal their professional counterparts. (except movie editing). It's just a matter of knowing what software is out there, which can be hard because it's not exactly advertised.

  • Looks like 4 more people are "moving to arch"!

  • gnome 3 has desktoprecord built-in. ctrl+shift+alt+r.

  • link for wallpaper plis!

  • @brenoferreiralima It's at willensky.blogspot.com/

  • I really love your desktop ArchLinux background (!) I'm an avid Ubuntu user with Gnome 2...Unity should really be left for note/netbooks...running terminal against the background was also very cool to see

  • @Riffronan Thanks. I can see why Ubuntu went in a separate direction from Gnome 3, but eventually they'll hammer out easier customization tools. I bet Ubuntu will make something like the Gnome Tweak Tool standard in a future update. Btw, Terminal in the background is Guake. I love it.
