For me... among all the short stories in 15Malaysia...Late Yasmin's is the simplest one...yet meaningfull..coz it is how Malaysian actually are...love it...
I have, and always will be, rebellious against selective comments made by my parents which I consider racist. They are my parents, yes, filial piety should be encouraged, yes. But that doesn't mean I should allow the cancer of racism to fester.
In my humble opinion, some of the comments here are not so right....I think the director is not showing us how 5 cents is making a distance for a possible friendship. On the contrary, this 5 cents shows the distance that is ALREADY there in Malaysia. The moving part of the movie is that despite the distance already there, there is still possible friendship and love between people from different background, as shown by the boy and the girl's innocence.
i believe its also telling us that we may have the option of pursuing dreams overseas but malaysia is our real home... chocolate being a blend of cocoa and milk, having different races uniting we get something sweet.
Having said that, I do believe that the younger generations nowadays are so much more accepting and open when it comes to the people they mingle with. And it's true, without belittling the issues we're facing, that the racism in Malaysia is nowhere near the racism that's going on in some other countries these days. Another brilliant, but sadly the last eye-opener by the late Yasmin Ahmad. Rest in peace.
Sad as it is to admit, this is very typical among some of the older generations of Malays, Chinese & Indians. They implant these kind of thoughts to their kids, who will grow up either: a) Unfortunately as narrow-minded as they are, or b) Fortunately open-minded if they choose/given the positive kind of influences. I'm grateful my parents have always been kind to all races (it'd be very hypocrite/ignorant of them to not to, considering their mixed bloods) and my friends are.. peace-loving.
Ive been overseas for years, and let me tell you nothing is as good as in Malaysia. Though you may have the opportunity to make money overseas, people are going to treat you as fourth class citizens , the word "immigrant" will be a brand stamped on your forehead. Social and moral values are nowhere to be picked up, or learned. This is not a place to raise your child, to live in harmony, to learn to give and take respect...as how we all learned during our childhood in Malaysia. Live 1Malaysia!
The elders influence our thoughts and behaviour.....the world would hv been a better place if we are open-minded like the late yasmin ahmad....sadly there's not many like her....
after watching this filem, actually the boy was try to make the malay girl laugh, for putting the basket at the head & also taking a baby bottle out, i think the boy mean about fren here is the malay chick , cos her sis is shouting so he hav no time to talk with the gal.... after juz like the chocolate.... he left is mean by love....
The chocolate could have been an opportunity to befriend this pretty girl. He was obviously smitten by her. Had he not been affected by the nagging of his mom, he could have shown kindness and generosity by giving the chocolate for free or gave it at 15 cents instead of 20 cents. What's 5 cents difference for a chance to a wonderful friendship? But, he blew it. The girl politely left.. and he showed his regret. The chocolate.. symbol of what could have been a bridge for friendship.. sadly lost.
The guy obviously was smitten by the pretty face of the girl and absentmindedly snatched something that was not what the girl asked for. That's my opinion.
The ending was what me and my literature buddies discussed about a lot. We came to a conclusion that he was being pushed by his mother to follow her then he started treating the girl a bit rudely. After that he felt guilty..the last line his mother asked him was 'So r u coming or not?" that line has double meanings.. 1. is he coming to her, after being yelled to come over... 2. is he going to follow his mother overseas
@Imanlee so he goes to his mother bringin the chocolate...n then he comes back putting the chocolate back on the counter...as if a symbol that he wants to stay..
Heres another thing that my friends and i noticed, he doesnt hv a shirt on rite? perhaps, he went back to get a shirt and go out to give the girl the chocolate. ...well, opinions and interpretations only... but i strongly believe that is what the ending is all about..
Yasmin Ahamad is a great director. I like this short film. At the beginng show young boy was font of the girl, when they meet he see no color but her beauity. however, his attitude was somehow shifted or influenced by his mom. I think in the end of he regretted he leave the money and the chocolate on the counter... .
fellas, Look at the whole story.... Yasmin Ahmad is a great director and definitely not a racist. In my opinion, the story tries to bring about how sometimes we are influenced by others and this is passed down (the hatred towards others of different creeds , religion, beliefs) to the younger ones. I am still trying to understand the final scene where she shows the chocalate.... unfortunately she is no more here in the mortal world to give us the answer
this is soooo darn true. This is what is currently happening in Malaysia. I'm not saying all Chinese are like this but most of them. If they hate the government, just hate them. Why do they have to hate all Malays?
I mean, I'm a Malay and I dont know you, and you dont know me. But you hate me just because I'm a Malay. That is just not right...man....think about it.
@EmoGomushin yeah man... they dont have to hate us like that... although we are bumiputra, we also dont have it easy.. and sometimes we disagree with the government too..
@ZH700 why are you being so hostile... I show my disagreement by my votes... but it seems like the majority still loves the government..not just the malays.. but i'll think i'll just keep my action to my voting rights.. I'm a peaceful man, I support equality and solidarity but I dont like those messy rallies and stuff.. If everybody knows the power of they votes, we would have a better Malaysia long ago...

First i don't understand the meaning of this film at all (i'm not Malaysian). However, after reading all of your comments i realize this film is quite touching. It makes me wanna watch another Yasmin's films. I do love this film. RIP
well my take on this is that there divide between the many different races (here showing mainly the malays and chinese) BUT we're taking cautiously taking steps to bridge the devide
the new generation is here..i guess a lot hapnd in histry... n theres a lot of racial tension btween the old folks..but the youngs ones are getin closer to each other.... "our frnds are here" not our race....
At the start the mother berates the boy for not leaving Malaysia bcos she believes the country is 'run' by Malays who will not gives the Chinese any chances. Yet this same Chinese boy, who apparently like the Malay girl, was rude & unforgiving once he was 'caught' being nice to the Malay girl. Here, Malaysia, sometimes over 5 cents a small local shop would just overlook it & let you have the chocolate.
k-hoe, left with the money, uncertain to what to do with it, decided to just leave behind the choc. cuz he cant actually go after her becuz of his mother (parental influence)..
I think the theme should be about UNDERSTANDING..
The chinese boy and the mlay girl understood it a sense. Why cant we?
Maybe he left the choc hoping that she would come back and take it right? So here's the thing, why??? Here's why i think why.
Do you guys realize that she left her coins??
I think it means that that malay girl, after k-hoe said xde duit xyah beli la, she realises that he chinese in particular) wants the money, probably cuz she understands the chinese dilemma potrayed in the story already. Thus, she decided to juz leave the coins behind (ni bukan sedekah ok, jgn slh faham)
Guys, its just a thought but... hear me out and please comment cuz i wanna know what you guys think.
I think that the story is trying to portray our youth today. That we(M'sian youth) are actually starting to see what matters in our homeland. Okay,
1) We know that k-hoe was behaving the way he is(shouting, kalau takde duit tak payah beli la) becuz of his mother right? His mom's clearly someone downright racist. He on the other hand doesnt look like one.
Initially the boy was attracted to the malay girl but was somehow clouded by prejudice planted by her sister.Yasmin once again shows how racial prejudice really sucks.
ia..aku pernah..ramai juga..jatuh cinta dgn gadis Melayu, lebih mendalam, lebih pedih rasanya, bukan kerna apa.. hanya kerna.. agama, akhirnya ramai terpisah, tulah halangan yg susah dilewati, sampai bila2 pun, sebab tulah aku faham perasaan Jasmin, mujur dia menemui suami yg sanggup berkorban utk dia, tak seperti aku, melukai org yg paling menyintai, akhirnya sendiri juga teruk dilukai, meninggalkan kenangan yg paling pahit dlm hidup, tulah message yg selalu cuba disampaikan dlm film Jasmin
those who were saying this is stupid,,perhaps didn't get the meaning...
i think this story is emphasizing the innocent of youngsters,,the racist is built by the stories, air and environment.if we continue on telling the bad things about other race,,the problem will not stop.pessimistic and prejudice will not help..they are devastating the peace that we chase for,,so stop spreading the air of racism
Very thought provoking. The boy is at a crossroad. The girl epitomizes the conflict that the boy is experiencing. He loves his country but hates it at the same time. Weren't we all the same when we were kids? It's the growing up which took away our innocence, and replaced it with prejudicial insecurities.
Brilliant! as stupid as I expected. Good job yasmin... err owh, your dead.. thank god.. Really big thanks to God for stopping her making any more of these stupid and idiotic movie..
What is the last scene tried to tell us? What lesson from behind. I not very understand the guys shout "Tak cukup tak payah belilah". Then he left the choc and money on the table. Is it mean let the gal pick by her own?
short yet meaningful. :) many underlying msgs.. depends on how u interpret it! yasmin approaches us in a very subtle way to convey this msg..but left a great impact in us. :)
racism would never be wiped out at all in any country...no matter what, it still lies deep down in everyone of us..it's just the matter of how we approach other races and the perceptions we're having against them, and perhaps, POLITICS does have lots of influence on this... sad to say..
the whole video is about meritocracy. the girl while doesnt have enuff money, still expect kahoe to be ok and sell the choc to her. sama la ngan polisi kerajaan yg bagi scholarship kat bumiputra eventhough kekadang mamat yg dpt tuh tak layak pon. and also calon2 yg result tak seberapa tapi still expect kerajaan owe them a scholaship just becoz of their ethnicity.
so amcam, clear beb? YA nyer vids kena halusi msg tersirat, byk makna yg orang kekdg terlepas pandang
yes, its true. myself as a bumitputra has benefited from these handouts. but instead of empowering the bumis, we are be stifled by the lower standard required of us. Perhaps it is time that orang2 melayu kita nih strive to have pride in not having to depend on the gov for scholarships. Spare the cane, spoil the child. Bangsa melayu telah terlampau dimanjakan. bangunlah bangsaku!!
image of the girl contradicts. She can wear nice clothes but don't have 5 cent? Perhaps should have been more money instead of just 5 cent. maybe 20 years ago this movie is spot on.
We complain about other races, but wats the difference of us when we put races on the sides of our mouth? Deep inside we know we do not want any fight or disagreements...but we stil kept repeating the same.
We all are just humans regardless how and standing on same mother earth.
It's so sad....why must the country make us in a love-hate relationship with our own country....
Why always the same story about..., Ofcourse, Yes, everybody know It' unique. Yasmin Ahmad style, but always the same unique style, sooner or later it'll get boring.
For me... among all the short stories in 15Malaysia...Late Yasmin's is the simplest one...yet meaningfull..coz it is how Malaysian actually are...love it...

HallowMeor 2 years ago

So here's the thing..

ia..aku pernah..ramai juga..jatuh cinta dgn gadis Melayu, lebih mendalam, lebih pedih rasanya, bukan kerna apa.. hanya kerna.. agama, akhirnya ramai terpisah, tulah halangan yg susah dilewati, sampai bila2 pun, sebab tulah aku faham perasaan Jasmin, mujur dia menemui suami yg sanggup berkorban utk dia, tak seperti aku, melukai org yg paling menyintai, akhirnya sendiri juga teruk dilukai, meninggalkan kenangan yg paling pahit dlm hidup, tulah message yg selalu cuba disampaikan dlm film Jasmin

those who were saying this is stupid,,perhaps didn't get the meaning...
i think this story is emphasizing the innocent of youngsters,,the racist is built by the stories, air and environment.if we continue on telling the bad things about other race,,the problem will not stop.pessimistic and prejudice will not help..they are devastating the peace that we chase for,,so stop spreading the air of racism
senichi15 2 years ago 6
Very thought provoking. The boy is at a crossroad. The girl epitomizes the conflict that the boy is experiencing. He loves his country but hates it at the same time. Weren't we all the same when we were kids? It's the growing up which took away our innocence, and replaced it with prejudicial insecurities.

AamyraA 1 year ago 8

Live 1Malaysia!

after watching this filem, actually the boy was try to make the malay girl laugh, for putting the basket at the head & also taking a baby bottle out, i think the boy mean about fren here is the malay chick , cos her sis is shouting so he hav no time to talk with the gal.... after juz like the chocolate.... he left is mean by love....
cheapkah 1 year ago
The chocolate could have been an opportunity to befriend this pretty girl. He was obviously smitten by her. Had he not been affected by the nagging of his mom, he could have shown kindness and generosity by giving the chocolate for free or gave it at 15 cents instead of 20 cents. What's 5 cents difference for a chance to a wonderful friendship? But, he blew it. The girl politely left.. and he showed his regret. The chocolate.. symbol of what could have been a bridge for friendship.. sadly lost.

Imanlee 2 years ago
@Imanlee so he goes to his mother bringin the chocolate...n then he comes back putting the chocolate back on the counter...as if a symbol that he wants to stay..
Heres another thing that my friends and i noticed, he doesnt hv a shirt on rite? perhaps, he went back to get a shirt and go out to give the girl the chocolate. ...well, opinions and interpretations only... but i strongly believe that is what the ending is all about..
Imanlee 2 years ago
Yasmin Ahamad is a great director. I like this short film. At the beginng show young boy was font of the girl, when they meet he see no color but her beauity. however, his attitude was somehow shifted or influenced by his mom. I think in the end of he regretted he leave the money and the chocolate on the counter... .
freenite1965 2 years ago
fellas, Look at the whole story....
