I know at least a half dozen people who own these, and I have not heard one of them complain about reliability.. what research do you cite for this claim?
wow I'm getting wailed on my posts! i shot about 200 rounds through it and the trigger didn't seem to lighten with use. I think that the main problem is poor engineering on the trigger spring, it needs to be about half the weight that it is. I found, and do find, that the first shot tends to go wide because of the initial trigger pull, I just can't seem to get used to it. I do love the integrated laser and the gun is comfortable in the hand.
.380 isn't a powerful round, however my .357 is a lot less powerful sitting at home because I can't wear a coat to conceal it... Shoot a watermelon with .380 and then tell me it's worthless. The laser was difficult to activate however I YouTubed a way to beef up the button and now it is very easy!! Placed about 30-40 shots inside head of torso target (including first shot) at about 7 yds without a single miss. So there!
A .380 as a caliber does not have enough wound efficiency. Should you ever have to use it you need to have a caliber that will create enough trauma that the attacker can not continue the attack noir get off additional rds at you. No law enf agency carries a .380. Min should be a .38 caliber or 9mm which will create sufficient wound efficiency and also you have little recoil when using this caliber which is also very important for multiple shots on target ...
Charles-Paul 01/14/2011. Watched all video's/read most reviews. Handled gun, inspected internals. Pro's; good size and ergo's, decent sights/trigger workable, good mag/materials. Con's; cheap (gimmick) laser with poor activation, unneeded safety. Overall, having not fired one, I rate it at being very competitive given the change in the MSRP and correction of new model problems. Would buy if I could get past laser or if the BG was offered without one.
Okay, two last comments...The safety is very very hard to engage. Expect your first shot to go just about anywhere, you will miss what you're aiming at as sure as day. You might be able to compensate by shot two or three. A hard trigger pull is not a safety feature. I asked my local gunsmith if he could lower the spring a little, but he is afraid to do so since it is so new. He recommended the sig.
@GunWebsites Nope, you're wrong on all points. Been shooting archery since I was six, picked up my first gun at 12. That makes 29 years with a variety of firearms. Regularly shoot several times a week. I can shoot just about anything straight and into the target. This gun is just designed wrong, at least for my hands. I can get this one to shoot straight on #2 through 6. This shoot not be used as a back up or concealed carry as the first shot will miss. Watch the vids...all miss the first shot.
@rolpher All miss the first shot? I have seen many reviews on this weapon and i have put a few hundred rounds through mine. I have never heard this complaint from anyone else, nor do I have a problem on the first shot. The trigger is stiff and long (as with most DAO 380s) but I still do not understand why you would have a problem with the first round and not the other 6... Only explanation I can think of is user error. If the gun is not right for you, thats fine, just dont make up a BS excuse.
@rolpher have to agree 100% the sig has a true safety and also is single action, very nice gun.
Gunsmith told my father the same thing.
Gun looks cool but is only a belly buster at best. The trigger needs to be pulled back so far it feels very unnatural, the loss of accuracy is not equal to the safety being gained
.
Selling a slightly used Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 only 12 rounds through it.
rolpher- 2 things. The 380 is double action only not single. And secondly, U should have known this gun would have a long heavy trigger pull before you bought it. Do your research.
@JoeDaddy40 it is impossible (or nearly impossible) to shoot this one straight. Double handed in a firm grasp with a slow trigger squeeze still sends the muzzle this way or that. It is not advisable to carry this one when the first shot may be the only one you get. I have since moved to the sig sauer p238. a little heavier, but nice smooth trigger pull. Apologize on the single/double action mix up. IF the first out was double, then single I would almost let it go. HArd trigger pull is very bad!
@rolpher No i agree with you on almost everything.. My wife is a perfect example, we went to the range this past weekend and she continuously shot center mass from the draw all day. Head shots she pulled a few, she averaged 4 out of 6 five times in a row. I agree that Sig is much better and i also agree that i don' t like the hard pull on the Bodyguard. But it is her only weapon and she has learned the the pull on it. It's just training and lots of dry firing. I my self will stick with my 229.
I really like the 38. Especially the ambi-cylinder release (I'm a lefty) and the classic-style slim grip profile, which you don't see really often these days. The reason I don't like the LCR is because of that monstrous grip they stick on it. I'll be 21 in about a year, and I plan on ordering one of the Bodyguard 38s for my carry piece.
@jugglingembalmer - just to answer your question, I like the Rugers. I like lasers on my carry guns. I'm okay with Crimson Trace as a laser and want an integral laser. I hate hate hate Crimson Trace as grips. Hard, cheap plastic, with no give and poor friction. I've been saying for years that the first company to make a quality compact revolver with an integral laser and grips that don't suck will get my money, and S&W won.
@misterjosephrock That makes sense. My only experience is my LCP with a Crimson Trace. I will agree that the button is awkward as my middle finger often slips off the power button as I pull the trigger making the laser dot disappear. My biggest concern would be reliability (priority 1), which the LCP has proven itself wonderfully. We're talking about Smith & Wesson, so reliability shouldn't be an issue. Which one did you buy? How is it so far?
I do not like Smith and Wesson,I rather like the Glock model 22,40 cal the hell of a reliable gun,I also like the Glock 19,9mm very good as well, there is not much in a glock, safety located on the trigger, squeeze the trigger disengaging the safety and bang!the Smith and Wesson has safeties, and safeties equates error, and injuries,if any of you like them, more power to you.
Don't get hangups on guns features, cosmetics & every bells and whistles.
Being technical is immaterial, It all comes down to the individual's degree of practice which leads to one common denominator: how you will manage a crisis, when the shit hits the fan.
Watch YT videos of cops handle various shooting scenarios they are involved with--and you will appreciate the above rationale.
Anaknangtupa have a point--these kinds of attitude (emphasis on features) gives you false confidence. Having the most modern 'toy' in your hip is dandy--but if you can't react effectively and effectuate shot accurately under stress, then say hello to the coroner.
@marck0938 There great guns for new shooters man!! I agree i don't like safeties on my pistols either but i would also say that if a person has never owned a pistol then the last thing they should start with is a glock.. They are for experienced shooters and professionals!! And some people just prefer a external safety. My wife is like that, me I'll take my 229 over either one of them...
I just commented on this girls visit to the Taurus booth. Another guy commented THAT video noticing the same stuff I did. Look at THAT video & the Taurus rep. THEN look at THIS video & the Smith & Wesson rep.
Looking forward to seeing this at a show. I have a keltec I carry with ct laser everyday perfect CCW. I have alot of respect for S&W we have some that I love to shoot so this is might be tempting!
IMHO I cant imagine anyone using a subcompact .380 for home defense. Realistically 40 or 45 is perfect, but to each there own. Anyone have price and specs for these two guns?
i rather have a head shot with a 32 than miss with a 44 mag, but thats just me, I hate the snap up of 40's , love the 45 but too expensive for home defense 45, for CCW 380 JHP's its all about connecting to save your life, my kimber ultra gets less and less carry time these days, my lcp is in pocket every day, God bless
@JackSureshot might be talking out my ass right now...but do you actually think your going to get a head shot, when its dark, your hands are shaking and your adrenalin is pumping, especially with a 32?? come on man.
LOL, touche . no matter what caliber you use bother, we gun owners are like a family, we might fight like cats and dogs with each other but faced with criminals and repressive regimes, we unite. happy hunting and Easter as well
of all the other things they could have made ambidextrous, they make the most worthless one. and i like having the option to put a laser on it, instead they decide for me and make me pay more? no thanks s&w
I'd be more apt to buy from the Sig guy (see SIG SAUER Answers a CCW question at SHOT Show 2010) as he says it doesn't matter male/female, caliber, etc. Only that it feels right in your hand. He goes so far as to say no matter what "brand". He answered her question in a much more professional manner than this guy. And the fact that hes there for the consumer rather than the manufacture.
This is outstanding. I am buying the .380 for my girlfriend as soon as I can get one. I like the revolver too. I think they have one up on the Ruger LCR with the strength of the new .38 bodyguard j frame. Plus with lasers already equipped you can save a little money not having to buy a separate laser attachment from another company. I know some guns already come equipped like my Kimber Pro Covert II, so don't send me any reply's saying this because I already know. Good idea Smith, you have my $
Plus the bodyguard 38 looks a lot cooler than the LCR. Normally, I like the looks of ruger revolvers more, but this S&W wins in my opinion. Not too hot about the cylinder release being on the top though.
I carry an LCP with a CT grip and if this one was around when I got that I'd of saved up for this one, I'm digging that 380 just the one bad thing with 380 is of course AMMO.
I'm a marketing teacher and lol I got mad because he never once addressed how this would be great for a woman...Your target market is right in front of you!!!
A great gun is a great gun, It doesn't matter whether the shooter is a male or female. I'm sure Jesse Abbate, Randi Rodgers and Julie Golob don't choose their guns based on their gender.
