My mum said this place was deadly as she lived nearby as a child in the 40's and it was known even then as a place where disorientation took place and the relentless tide rushed in faster than a horse could gallop...due to the shifting sands....those poor Chinese people...they didn't really stand a chance.
I have fished the bay for nearly 40 years & can read the sands , but still treat her with respect ! even the experienced can get caught out as the sands change with every tide.a deep gulley can be filled with soft sand in 2 days being fatal to walk over. heavy rains flowing down the kent channel meeting the bore can make the tide rise twice as fast as normal. she is a beautiful bay , but please be wary & treat her with caution.
I live in this area, and I have a mate who live's in the south east.....He keeps asking me 'when are you going to come and live in Gods country' then one day I told him
' Why dont you know, this is where God takes his holidays' he's not asked me since.
It looks slow because he is up high and far away from it. Look at the road right next to you when you are driving and a something far away. One is slow one is fast but if you slam into a another car 70mph you will know the truth.
@crapdrummer You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. People work in that bay and get their livelihood from it, as well as it being one of the largest salt marshes in the world. Let me pay your train fare up here and you can come and meet some of the relatives of the cocklers who died out there last year and you can tell them how “boring” you found it all to the survivors' faces.
@crapdrummer All that coming from a clown like you with nothing better to do than post abusive comments on some old boy's video? Have some respect you clown. Your just an example of how bad this once great country of ours has become. At least people can be safe in the knowledge you are probably too poor to visit Cumbria, or at least wouldn't dare speak like that to someones face. You need to look at yourself and think, am i normal?
i remember when i was about 6 me and my mum were at the beach and seen a group of four people were heading into the wet sand by the time we left the group didnt come bck 0-o
i live there and i was out walking my dog today and i know the sands and the tides verry well and how to get out of a pincer movment.
and i saw these tourists from like japan or something about 3 miles out and as looked to heyshem i saw the tide and it was coming in so fast and i was about a quatere of a mile out and i knew these tourists were gonna drown so i had to ring morcombe RNLI and they had to call in a helicopter from black pool and the copter got them
I was just curios if any one has died in this bay or if it was just a nickname. I live in alaska not far from Cook inlet which also gets a bore tide and i have seen how nasty they can be.
Sadly a large number of people have died in Morecambe Bay over the years. I think there have been less deaths since the Chinese cockle pickers died because that tragedy was relayed worldwide, so more people are aware of the dangers. The Chinese were on the sand at night and weren't aware that the tide came in twice daily. Also, many of them ran away from the rescue teams because they were in the UK illegally, so they disappeared, not realising that they were surrounded by water.
Do people have to reply like morons? That shot is obviously taken from near the "Giants Seat" at Jack Scout near Silverdale. I film there regularly for my programmes. Suggest that perhaps you might to use a tripod or get in touch with Morecambe Bay Movie Makers.
silverdale full of chav's mate no not in this part of the woods. you should go carnforth, morecambe and lancaster to see the wanna be gangsters ha ha its a fact any way i used to jump of the rocks at jenny browns the isnt that bad, just don't be silly and walk miles out or you be the shit 6 feet under [water] remember play safe
This clip is of the bay from Jenny Brown's point at Silverdale it may be of Morecambe Bay but it is no where near Morecambe. If you got out of your car you could see it. By the language used I get the feeling that it comes from a body with a large posterior. At least a tiny brain.

The speed of any tidal bore varies all the time depending on what it's flowing over and all sorts of other factors. Severn Bore sometimes creeps along at 4 or 5 mph, yet at other times it can be going 3-4 times that speed. It can be late arriving at one spot, then early at the next.
Its not a high tide but has a large range over huge mud flats and comes in at a good rate of knots, (quicker than a person can make it anyhow). not as impressive as the severn tho is it..
Very dangourous place the video doesn't do it justice to how bad this is the tide changes in 20 mins or there abouts i do beleive and as said below has very dangouros quik sand that only one man knows hows walk across the bay saftley

Another tragedy happened two years ago when a father and his son went onto the bay to fish/cockle. They were cut off by the tide and although the lifeboat crews were altered by the father calling on his cell phone, they could not find them in the dark. The last messages from the father were recorded at the lifeboat HQ asking for help - he held his child on his shoulders - until the last. Nothing more was heard after that.
....and yes it changes every day by approx. an hour each day...it hinges on the moon phases. So you need a tide timetable for every day!! What is fine one day doesn't apply the next. Dangerous is the word.
refer to earlier response ie:It's not the size etc.
Average depth across the bay 2 -3 meteres. Depth in hidden channels up to 10 mtres . High tides 10 metres - low tides 6 metres. Wind increases these levels. A good swimmer may survive if he doesn't die of hypothermia ! Over the years many people have been cut off and perished. The latest was the deaths of over 23 illegal chinese cockle pickers working for gang masters. They left them to die when the tide came in
wow, that was amazing video of the tide, I have never seen anything like it, How deep do you think it is? If your a good swimmer, could you make it to a safe place?Does this wave come in at the same time everyday or does it change from day to day? thanks cool video
its the fastest tide i have ever seen in my life, very fast indeed. I can only imagine how much those chinese cockle pickers suffered. RIP to the 23 who died.
It's not the size of the waves that makes this place so dangerous - it's the size of the Bay, its flat sands, the hidden channels and the speed in which the tide - rising to 10 feet in a matter of minutes that's the problem. The 22 cocklers that died here were cut-off in a rising tide in mid winter. The Bay is over 180 square miles and once you are cut-off by rising waters, there's no hope.
I'm also from Morecambe and again have been taught not to wander on the sands. It always surprises me that people have not learnt the lesson despite the coverage that the cockle pickers got.
