The Tonal Character of the Satchurator and Jemini is diff, instead of getting the same setting for all, you should have used your ears and heard for similar drive sounds, people who own the Satch put the tone low cause its by its nature, a sharper pedal cause thats the tone Satch uses
Excellent excellent comparison. You hit on all the points ppl need to know about. Ppl take note at the end, how he hits a chord and swings the tone knob around to find the sweet spot. That's dialing in tone with your ears. That is how you should be tweaking just about everything in your chain.
Personally, I think the Satchurator has that classic distortion sound that ALOT of people like, but the Jemini has more versatility. I think I just might have to put both pedals in my rig.
I like the vai pedal better....sounds like u can so more with it and it doesnt sound like daggers in ur ear, also it looks amazing really cool colors and hey, isnt that what its really all about, I mean you all know im a poser from way back lol
I personally think that the jemini is the best, but thats just my opinion. I think your right tone king, the tone knob on the satchurator is much more harsh. I like the jemini because steve vai's tone has always had a great thick quality to it. Not that the satchurator isn't good, i just think that the jemini gives you more tonal possibilities.
The thing is with this demo is that both these guys use a ton of different effects and although these accurately target those styles of distortion, it's nothing without their effects. Personally, the Vox Satchurator sounded better than the Ibanez Jemini but as I said, these are nothing without the wah, delay, reverb and tape echo these guys use all the time.
i have a thing for the jemini, but the vox sounds alot better in this video. i think you needed to cut the bass a little on the amp during the jemini. it is overwhelming
Don't know WHY newbies think that a trebly sound is always better than others... Different pedals, different sounds, i think no one is better than other, both are good pedals.
Here I think the Satch was best. But me have a feeling that when you have a crancked amp right beside you,the Vai will be the best.It sounds like it has more balls and will keep the guitars fundamental tone.
the Jemini wins by 1,000 miles...More natural tone...More bottom end...A more diverse pedal all around...The Vox is just too thin and fuzzy...A shit fuzzy.
@Rebellion0915 Have you ever stopped to consider the fact that the reason there is so much treble is because Satriani's tone is trebly? Not to mention the fact that this "Tone King" never EQ's his amps properly for pedal demos. The Satchurator is a solid pedal for what it was designed for.
Both of these pedals are shit, only reason people say the vox is good because its better than the jemini, they still both suck...lucky the guitarists themselves are 2 of the greatest!
The Satchurator sounds much more lively whereas the Jemini sounds almost like a toy than a real pedal and that on a demo made by the same brand of amp that Vai uses...I was fond of the idea of having an overdrive and a lead channel in one pedal but Jemini doesn't live up to its promise :(
They are both very nice pedals, satchurator sounds more "musical / versatile" to me, I do have a one myself, and I like it very much, and it still surprises me on how much you can shape the tone just by dialing around on the knobs.
The gemini sounds great more " in your face- flooring, knockout" , a little disappointing that you can't have both active at the same time, I don't know how useful that would be but would bug me to have a dual pedal that had to operate in single mode
You know, I bought the Satchurator, being a big Satch fan - (Vai too), and I really wanted to like it! But I just couldnt... I tried it in a variety of amps, including the beautiful Carvin x100B head, the V3 head, a 900 Marshall, and several small valve amps, and it just sounded far too "Buzzy" for my liking in every one of them... I honestly preferred my stock standard Boss DS-1 to this thing... I havent tried the Jemini, but I dont think I'll bothe, really... Thanks for the review, TTK...
@lmsjr I prefer brighter piercing tone, I dont know why. Maybe because when you get into melody it tends to stand out in the spot light. Both are great pedals man, but I have to go with the vox. How about you?
I like the Steve Vai Jemini pedal. It's much more smoother sounding. But if you have the two pedals set up the same way, then of course it's going to sound very similar. The pedal was meant to have two separate distortions. I like it better because it lets me cover a lot more with a lot less tweaking and change tones with out having to reach for another pedal.
The jemini needs the boost from the satch pedal and it will be perfect :)) btw i have the satchurator and with my settings tis pedal is perfect except with the tone range...from 12 o'clock and more...that's the only thing i don't like to much. And the satch is better for soloing. Cheers!
I have both. Like the jemini way better. sounds more tubish and real. The pedals have huge differnet characteristics, so by setting everything the same its not good
Your guitar/amp setup reacts differently to each pedal. Funny really. The best grain actually came from The Satchurators Channel one. It provided to hardest edged comb, where the More button just added more drive.
The Jemini just overdrove the guitar, I wasnt quite satisfied with its amt. of grain / "Comb" it just gave it more low end, more volume and that thick "Bob marley joint kind of a sound" That Vai mentioned in his demo. The green channel was just a crunch box.
Heya Toneking. The Jemini ARE two tubescreamers behind each other. So the Satchurator should be on 1 and the jemini on green. Then bothe pedals should be on MORE versus RED channel.....
Tone is in your mind, only you can find the tone in your head. Pedals may or may not push it in your direction, therefore ultimately your must experiment and try as many as mush as you can :)
@djoseph104 Agree. The Satchurator not as flabby and is far more focused.
It's an improperly conceived test, really. If he really wanted to do it right, he would have put an Ice 9 along with the Satchurator. It should have been a distortion-to-distortion test, with the Jemini OD half intentionally ignored. Bad test; he needs to buy an SPL meter to set the pedal outputs; that is the neutral way to set the outputs; the stupid way is to set the knobs "in the middle".
From this demo, I would say the Satchurator. However, just because both of them have the dials at 12 may not mean their equivalent in sound. I could be wrong, but I just think that maybe with some slight adjustments, the Jemini could sound like the Satchurator or vice versa.
I feel like in this video the vai sounds a little muddy but I feel like that is easily fixed with some tweaking. The vai has more useable tones in it I feel also, sure I love satch and have the ice 9 but the satchurator seems to get too much high end fizz and hair when pushed too far which sounds bad unless you have an amp that for some reason has no treble and needs it haha.
Personally I may get a jemini down the road to beef up my legacy. Atm I'll stick with my current gear.
The thing about these pedals is that they were based on existing pedals that both players use to compliment their signature amps. Standalone, they sound much different than what you hear on a recording. That said, I prefer the Jemini because of the beefy tone.
Vai's pedal got some balls!!! I figure this pedal is what he uses to get the liquid lead sound!! I actually might consider getting one of them babys!!!
i think, this is simply a matter of taste, because both are voiced to fit Vai and Satch needs according to their gear, maybe the Jemini sound different trough a Jem, and the Satchurator sound different in Joe´s guitar, and their amps etc. cause i can´t hear their tone on neither of the pedals...
I'm not terribly impressed with either pedal but if I had to pick one it would be the Steve Vai Jemini. It has more life to it. The Satchurator is too sterile for my taste.
The Satch only seems to sound good when the tone is at 10 o'clock, like you had it set at the last. God, I'm glad I didn't spend $160 on that pedal. The Jemini seems to have more body to the tone across the gauge, where the Satch just seems to be a really generic sounding tone. Maybe that's what Joe wanted...doesn't suit my colour palate.
Both are great guys and amazing guitarists. I perfer to listen to JS. And I like the Satch pedal over the Jem, both from your demo and played live in my own ears.
I'd go with the Satch pedal. I tend to prefer the heavier distortion. Once you tweaked the tone knob, the sound was comparable. On top of that, the "More" option leaves the Jemini in the dust.
The Jemini had so much more mid range punch and that is what counts if you want to cut through the mix! I say redo the video cause the Satch seem to low in volume to tell and make it fair.
But I say buy a good amp and you'll never need and OD or distortion pedal!
Satchurator by a mile! Maybe you could demo OD pedals to drive the dirty channel on the amps once in a while? Please??? Lots of metal players out here that do it that way! Thanks.
Satchurator sounds tighter, and the Jemini sounded punchier. Overall, I think I would go with the Jemini for the punchier sound and because it seems like it would also offer a broader tonal spectrum to play around with. On a side note, I hope to see you demo more Ibanez gear/guitars in the future.
I think the Vox sounds a lot like the Soldano SLO100, marshallish with gain and tone at 12 o' clock, and as you turn the gain up it sounds more punchy and compressed. The Steve Vai pedal sounded muddy and confused to me, and neither the fact that you can hear the clean guitar sound over the overdriven tone helped.
@TheThrashingDeath I'm hearing it the same way, just not clear seems very muffled to me. Truly I don't think I would buy either. My RC Boost into my amp sounds so much better then either.
i dont know if its a fair comparison, but the Vai pedal def sounded more beefier and made the Satch pedal sound weak.To be fair id prob have to hear Vais set up and Satch set up side by side to really hear the difference.
the vox sounds more clear but when you actually play one, the distortion is a very dirty distortion very much like satch's, but the pedal is waaaay more flexible you can really pull out some awesome tones from it and it cleans up real nice
hey guys ive got a question that just struck me and i thought id ask here, ive never played on a floyd guitar simply because im new to playing but would a floating trem have problems with bends, like would the bridge move and detune the other strings?
By the way i like the Steve Vai pedal more.. sounds more creamy and thick
@chidorikakashi cool thanx for your comment mate.. after a little research i read that putting more springs in would stop it so that its harder to move the trem
The Vox has clear, razor-like clarity. The Boss is fuller and much darker. Which is best? Only way to really determine that is what type of music your wanting to play. You can't say one is better than the other. I can think of two songs right off the top of my head that would require each pedal. Both are great. Both have their places and uses. I know TK, that's not really waht your looking for, but that's all I got.
@thejack1212 Hey Jack, that's one of the most asked questions when it comes to pedals. Overdrive pedals are supposed to give you that crunch that comes from a tube amp tuned way up to that point when they start to break up and give you an organic and natural distortion. OD pedals are very popular to push an already dirty tube amp to give it that extra little gain. A distortion pedal gives you way more gain and bottom end punch. Distortion pedals work great with clean sounding amps.
i prefer the gemini pedal, however like every pedal demo on the internet, you can only guage a little bit of the pedal this way, the real test is which fits in better with a full band playing. as i say, i prefer the gem but i think it has too much lows for a band situation and the satch would be better, especially if you have another rythm player in the band
I prefer the Satchurator since it's usable with the tone centered, allowing for adjustment for thick or thin sounding guitars. I do like the other pedal, but I don't believe that tone would ever cut through a mix.
there is a mod for the vai pedal so both can be on at same time ans all i can say is wow but even un modded both pedals are very cool i would say sat if you like razor edge stuff and vai for the rhythm
does anyone else think that in a way the pedals would be voiced to the players guitars? Vais is like a typical Ibanez RG, so the pedal needs that bit more thickness and beef, Satrianis is a bit of a different Ibanez, with the wood and shape, having played the Satriani it does have a bit more beef like a les paul. Opinions?
p.s. the Vox is my fave, but being played on a les paul style guitar you can see why.
Tone is such an individual thing. Personally I would go with the VOX satchurator as i could do more with it. The Gemini was a bit fuller/richer. to be honest i would not say no to either of them.
i liked the jemini slightly more. The satchurator sounded a little too much like a common distortion pedal. The jemini overdrive channel sounded awesome.
the whole idea of the jemini is to use the overdrive on an already driven amp for extra sustain, whereas the distortion is intended to be used with amps clean channel.
maybe the vox is intended to add dirt to an already beefy sounding amp
As guitarists I love Satch & Vai equally. Been listening to both of them for over 20 years. As far as the pedals, the Jemini has superior tone hands down. Thanks for the side by side TTK. I've been tossing around the idea of getting the Jemini for awhile now. :)
when considering these pedals, please remember you will need to cut through the rest of the band, so mids must get through.

Hey TTK! Can you share your opinion on the pedals' quiality and sound more often in your vids?

The Satch pedal is way too thin.I prefer the Vai

No contest here. Gemini sounds better. More low end and MIDS.
oysterlicker 1 year ago
@oysterlicker I agree. Vai has more of a rounder tone while Satch has more of a cut through the mix sound.
ibanezman007 1 year ago
Both are great guys and amazing guitarists. I perfer to listen to JS. And I like the Satch pedal over the Jem, both from your demo and played live in my own ears.
Great work Tone King, thanks again!!
wwit63 1 year ago
I'd go with the Satch pedal. I tend to prefer the heavier distortion. Once you tweaked the tone knob, the sound was comparable. On top of that, the "More" option leaves the Jemini in the dust.
briansteedman 1 year ago
The vai distortion seems warmer and thinker. The satch is more that peavey sound. probably because thats what he plays.
Hallman88 1 year ago
I heard people were having a lot of performance problems with the Satchurator.
BTW, I love the inlays on that Carvin!
DisasterBlaster500 1 year ago
The Jemini had so much more mid range punch and that is what counts if you want to cut through the mix! I say redo the video cause the Satch seem to low in volume to tell and make it fair.
But I say buy a good amp and you'll never need and OD or distortion pedal!

Very nice vid TTK ! i like more the satchurator !!!, cool very nice vid !!!!!!!!!!!!

Great show. Ibanez Jemini wins.

Satchurator by a mile! Maybe you could demo OD pedals to drive the dirty channel on the amps once in a while? Please??? Lots of metal players out here that do it that way! Thanks.
ldtriplesix 1 year ago
hey TTK did you ever see that video of Steve Vai where he demonstrates his pedal? that it is 2 Steve vais, iks pretty funny...
btw, i like Satch's pedal better

I like the Jemini a lot better. Sounded much fuller to me.

Vai is sooooooooooooo overrated...satch kicks his ass in every aspect..vai couldnt play a blues lick if his life depended on it.
Behemoth941 1 year ago
@Behemoth941 Disagree!
kesx 1 year ago
@Behemoth941 haha obviously, Satriani was the one who taught Vai how to play
therealrene 1 year ago
Satchurator sounds tighter, and the Jemini sounded punchier. Overall, I think I would go with the Jemini for the punchier sound and because it seems like it would also offer a broader tonal spectrum to play around with. On a side note, I hope to see you demo more Ibanez gear/guitars in the future.
anongrey 1 year ago
I think the Vox sounds a lot like the Soldano SLO100, marshallish with gain and tone at 12 o' clock, and as you turn the gain up it sounds more punchy and compressed. The Steve Vai pedal sounded muddy and confused to me, and neither the fact that you can hear the clean guitar sound over the overdriven tone helped.
TheThrashingDeath 1 year ago
@TheThrashingDeath I'm hearing it the same way, just not clear seems very muffled to me. Truly I don't think I would buy either. My RC Boost into my amp sounds so much better then either.
JohnBertotti 1 year ago
i dont know if its a fair comparison, but the Vai pedal def sounded more beefier and made the Satch pedal sound weak.To be fair id prob have to hear Vais set up and Satch set up side by side to really hear the difference.
imsuckingwind 1 year ago
the vai sounds like shit to me. too compressed and not enough sustain on the single notes. Satchurator is really nice sounding
maybe000itsme 1 year ago
the vox sounds more clear but when you actually play one, the distortion is a very dirty distortion very much like satch's, but the pedal is waaaay more flexible you can really pull out some awesome tones from it and it cleans up real nice

hey guys ive got a question that just struck me and i thought id ask here, ive never played on a floyd guitar simply because im new to playing but would a floating trem have problems with bends, like would the bridge move and detune the other strings?
By the way i like the Steve Vai pedal more.. sounds more creamy and thick
MusicToMyEars36 1 year ago
@MusicToMyEars36 The Khaler floating bridge has problems with bending strings and getting out of tune but the floyd rose doesnt have thos problems
chidorikakashi 1 year ago
@chidorikakashi cool thanx for your comment mate.. after a little research i read that putting more springs in would stop it so that its harder to move the trem
MusicToMyEars36 1 year ago
TK use the ENGL with a Bernie Rico Jr Gary Holt Please!
DrEviscerator666 1 year ago
The Vox has clear, razor-like clarity. The Boss is fuller and much darker. Which is best? Only way to really determine that is what type of music your wanting to play. You can't say one is better than the other. I can think of two songs right off the top of my head that would require each pedal. Both are great. Both have their places and uses. I know TK, that's not really waht your looking for, but that's all I got.

What's the difference between Overdrive and Distortion?
thejack1212 1 year ago
@thejack1212 Hey Jack, that's one of the most asked questions when it comes to pedals. Overdrive pedals are supposed to give you that crunch that comes from a tube amp tuned way up to that point when they start to break up and give you an organic and natural distortion. OD pedals are very popular to push an already dirty tube amp to give it that extra little gain. A distortion pedal gives you way more gain and bottom end punch. Distortion pedals work great with clean sounding amps.
TheOzzk 1 year ago
IMO you should've used a different guitar, like an Ibanez RG or something along those lines.
chainsawcarroll 1 year ago
i prefer the gemini pedal, however like every pedal demo on the internet, you can only guage a little bit of the pedal this way, the real test is which fits in better with a full band playing. as i say, i prefer the gem but i think it has too much lows for a band situation and the satch would be better, especially if you have another rythm player in the band
username125418 1 year ago
@username125418 I was thinking the same thing.
TheOzzk 1 year ago
i would prefer the vox. Sounds like it has a better clarity to me :)

Not to be a PIA but, have you considered doing a Class 5 demo? If you have done so, my apology.
Sorry to switch gears like this!
Rock On!
zuperbal 1 year ago
I prefer the Satchurator since it's usable with the tone centered, allowing for adjustment for thick or thin sounding guitars. I do like the other pedal, but I don't believe that tone would ever cut through a mix.
ArielsSmartyPants 1 year ago
there is a mod for the vai pedal so both can be on at same time ans all i can say is wow but even un modded both pedals are very cool i would say sat if you like razor edge stuff and vai for the rhythm
dixiedevil1369 1 year ago
does anyone else think that in a way the pedals would be voiced to the players guitars? Vais is like a typical Ibanez RG, so the pedal needs that bit more thickness and beef, Satrianis is a bit of a different Ibanez, with the wood and shape, having played the Satriani it does have a bit more beef like a les paul. Opinions?
p.s. the Vox is my fave, but being played on a les paul style guitar you can see why.
MitchRench 1 year ago
Tone is such an individual thing. Personally I would go with the VOX satchurator as i could do more with it. The Gemini was a bit fuller/richer. to be honest i would not say no to either of them.

the gemini sounds so much fuller... this even gives me gas for a gemini pedal :o
the satchurator with the more even feels a bit harsh to my hears... while the gemini sounds more clear with better defenition.
Gemini ftw ^^
CarlosCepinha 1 year ago
I have used both and think they are both a huge step down from a Keeley modded DS-1

I prefer the gemeni, It's much thicker and has a nicer meatier tone.

I like the gemini...If you don't eat your meat you can't have any pudding!

i liked the jemini slightly more. The satchurator sounded a little too much like a common distortion pedal. The jemini overdrive channel sounded awesome.
rampage222555 1 year ago
the tone circuit on the satchurator is a parametric eq which mostly sounds pretty crap

distorcion on jemini seems more an overdrive

the whole idea of the jemini is to use the overdrive on an already driven amp for extra sustain, whereas the distortion is intended to be used with amps clean channel.
maybe the vox is intended to add dirt to an already beefy sounding amp
jhep1 1 year ago
i liked both pedals but i liked the satchurator a little bit more xD
TheTrickTac 1 year ago
As guitarists I love Satch & Vai equally. Been listening to both of them for over 20 years. As far as the pedals, the Jemini has superior tone hands down. Thanks for the side by side TTK. I've been tossing around the idea of getting the Jemini for awhile now. :)
