I am a Helicopter Flight Instructor-Instrument certified to instruct in the R44, so I thought people would want to hear my opinion. There is an elastic clause in the FAA regulations that prohibit "reckless or dangerous" operation of aircraft so as to "endanger the life or property of another. Having passengers on board makes the regulation apply. Turned the tail into the golf-cart, and landed the opposite direction as he took off. And that wasn't a particularly good full-down. In bad taste.
Shut up. I have flown with this pilot many times and today was one of them. He is an amazing pilot and he knows what he is doing. Alot of people are up hear talking shit about the man but have never been 100 yards from a helicopter. If you don't like his style of flying, shut the hell up and move on.
Mighty brave when you know you can roll that throttle back on....I am sure this tail number will make an NTSB accident report one day. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that this guy doesn't hold a CFI certificate.
As the old saying goes, "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." That's what comes to mind when I see pilots pull dangerous stunts like that.
No doubt, that was fun! It all worked, THAT TIME, and probably more times, and could actually and possibly continue so long as nothing goes wrong during the low altitude spectacle, ... but ... whenever anything unexpected/unpredicted DOES happen, (even like a bird strike) the response and recovery options are few and brief. This demonstrates the difference between aircraft / pilot ability as compared to pilot safety judgment.
Many comments from people who never flew helicopter. I think you can do that with military helicopter and be safe but doing this with R44 is suicide ( sooner or later) the R44 is very gentle helicopter and the engine is not so powerfull ..
Likely a military or ex military pilot. Not particularly difficult or especially dangerous maneuvers. Civil pilots are taught to fly as safe as possible and their skills reflect that. Military pilots are taught to fly to the edge, but not beyond, the aircraft's envelope, and their skills reflect that.
this guy had to have flown in veitnam war. He flys like my uncle does. Some damn fine pilots from the 60's and 70's. Great Video. Thanks for sharing it.
I have flown R22, R44, Bell 206B, 206L, and 407 and we never do emergency procedures with passengers. Also guys like this are the ones that start to feel real confident in the helicopter and start to get complacent. When you start showing off like this is when you need to reevaluate your flying behavior. If you want to do this at an airfield SOLO then so be it.
@dannylightning: for anyone thinking this is a safe maneuver, take it from a licensed helicopter pilot, that while it looks cool, with passengers on board, this never should have been attempted. we do have to pracitce autos a lot, but this was not a standard auto, this is called a 0speed auto, 0 speed autos are not taught to most people with a private license. and however sadly, most pilots will not do 50 autos, as you can only cram about 7 into an hour at around or over 400 an hour.

and I wouldn't be too worried about his passengers. 44's are built for crashing.

This is an example of a complacent pilot. In case of an engine failure he would be killed !

"Great pilot Skills" - utter rubbish. Its the worst display of airmanship. PIC should have his licence removed.
What a complete LOSER.

Idiot. Saw a guy do a similar thing with a student at Bournemouth in UK in early 90's in a R22. Pilot/Instructor had 10k+ hours.
He killed himself and another student a week later doing the very same thing.
