It is in fact a big surprise. She had a lucky draw, only playing one seeded player (Marion Bartoli) in the draws. All the higher seeds were knocked out in earlier rounds. Her quarterfinal match looked less than impressive. I was very surprised to see her reach the semis.

Even with 1.6 billion people, most of them don't care about tennis in the first place. They like Yao Ming and Yang Wei. So most of their athletes with the perfect structure for tennis are playing basketball or doing gymnastics.

I have to call you're wrong on this. Last time I read the news they're saying tennis courts are being built everywhere in major Chinese cities and chinese are also hiring top tennis coaches from Europe and other countries that have tennis traditions. so yeah, we just have to wait and see. I'd say give'em 5 years from now and we'll be seeing more Chinese players on tour.
