I had served in the US Marines back in the 1970s, so many moons ago. Remember seeing the movie at one of the on-post theaters overseas then & thought it classic. The movie does not show WWII (or any war) as glorification. I like this scene cause it's so emotional & touching, esp. when David Warner says that 'there are better people than me'. And of course both James Mason & James Coburn played sterling parts. I think that this movie should be shown on cable TV as it'd make people aware of war.
Since my first viewing of the film many moons ago, I've always managed to remember these particular words from one of Mason's lines in this scene: "In the new Germany, if such a thing is allowed to exist...". James nailed the Colonel Brandt character like no one else could, and his great work in Peckinpah's only war movie helps keep it from becoming a lost masterpiece of World War II cinema.
Kiesel obviously did a good job in the 'new germany' after the war. They're in a fucking site better condition than Britain now!
