all this stuff is entirely bull shit the codec packs or whatever...
follow these easy steps, all this stuff is dumb
1) go on start menu
2) Search "run"
3) and type in "msdt.exe -id WindowsMediaPlayerConfigurationDiagnostic" no bracets this will reset all your settings and fix all issues you have with windows media player
4) apply fix and close troubleshooter

@sexyboyscouser It could be that it is broken. Or maybe, if the desktop/laptop made contact with any type of heavy movement. It could be so that the cable to your drive is loose. Check it. If you can insert a CD and can play it. It's probably a Windows Media Error.
