  • What a performance! He has great voice. Like Domingo. But Domingo is the best. He realy is the king of opera! But even Gigli is very good. Bravo Gigli.

  • Ive never heard a better version ... simplicity and sincerity .....no .....trying to wow the listiners ...the crack hiss just makes it better if anyone thinks someone does it better ....let me know .......

  • Breathtaking!

  • Grande entre los Grandes.....

  • Simply beautiful. whatelse can one say ? he doesn't even need technique as his voice is making statement that simpler the better like minimalism.

  • Glorious singing, but does he have to breath right in the middle of the line? he does it three or four times and it just sounds wrong...

  • Gigli has a great voice. But he sings in his native italian!

    Close to cheating for me....

Singing in french is much more difficult. For me this performance is not good at all, just strange and awkward.

  • I don't think the same. I believe that sing this aria, in pianisimo, in italian, is as dificult as in french.

If you don't think that, try to do it and sing it as well as gigli did it. Good luck!

Mucha suerte!

  • Beautiful, just beautiful ...

I have a version of the part, but this is very good quality. thnx for posting it!

  • Simplemente Maravilloso

  • Coralrabida, you seem to have found the best rendition of this great aria. Gigli makes it sound so easy to deliver, and that is how it should be. Someone with a graver voice should not attempt it, lest he ruins the piano qualities.

  • This is a great version, far better than most on Youtube.

  • There is only one Gigli. That sweet voice can belong to no other human being. Sublime, thank you so much.

  • Beautiful. Such a tender rendition

Grazie mille per questo video meraviglioso ( thank you very much for this beautiful video ).

  • Only Gigli and Schipa......wonderful recording.

  • Thank you very much, coralrabida. Best regards, t.

  • thank you SOOO much!

  • A very very beautiful rendition

    great respects, love and adoration

I like whistling this ( my favorite song ever)

    when I'm in the mood

and put as much emotion and feeling into this beautiful song as I can

and then Ave Maria (Schubert) :-)

  • Having listened to every version presented here on youube I would have to say for MY own tastes that this tender , softer version captures the "spirit " of the piece . Lovely .

    Thanks for posting .

  • Kerrassaan upeaa! Mitä kauniimpaa enää maailmassa on?

  • insuperabile in quest'aria ... Gigli IMMENSO ...

  • Very touching, with a vulnerable quality.

    Beautiful singing for beautiful music.

  • Grandissimo Gigli.

  • potresti dirmi dove trovarla ??' grazie mille

  • brobeer ook eens. costa minola

  • leoncavallo composed i pagliacci and you just officialllllly got ownd.

  • I apologize.

I was confused, and your reply gave me the right answer.

    Thanks,

  • Thank you for your correction, and I agree with your opinion, yes!

  • exquisite, I don't care what anyone calls his "method of production"

  • beautiful! :) 5*****

  • The angles Gigli comes from and the unusual phrasing are stunning, and so original. Great aria, great singer.

  • mitico Carlos!!!! MEtti sempre dell'ottima musica ;-)

  • Stupendo, veramente bellissimo.

  • Marvellous!!!Thanks for uploading.

  • This is the ultimate interpretation of this aria. No-one ever came near to it - no-one!

  • This is classic Gigli and probably the best rendition of this aria

  • beautiful, love it! Thank you my teacher for sharing. Such a gentle floating mezza voice and the control, amazing. You get carried away with the messa di voce 1:34-40 and again 3:10-17. I appreciate these older recordings much more than the style of today. In my opinion NO comparison. Correct me if I am wrong. Fantastico!

  • On the contrary, my Brookie, you are SO right to refer to the sacred monsters of the past rather than to our current yelling baritenors. None of them can hold a candle to Gigli, Lauri Volpi and later on Tagliavini, for the mastering of the "falsetone" or mixed chest/head voice which gives to Beniamino this heavenly ethereal sound, and whose secret they seem to have bring with them in the grave :( Even the great Björling and Kraus do a wrong aesthetic choice singing the aria in full chest.

  • Where as I agree with you about Lauri Volpi and Gigli as masters in their domains of excellence. I still enjoy(second to this) Kraus' version of this song. I feel it was His(Kraus) best recording, and it forced him to a level of excellence. This is a masterpiece of a song, from multiple angles.

  • I enjoy Kraus' version too, but as you said well, "second to this one" ! ;-)

  • I enjoy this one for the voice and approach but the Kraus one is a bit more balanced and,of course, it's live.

    But I adore Rosa.

  • Gigli's sweety flasettone makes me melt. I like Kraus' version too, though too much "in muscles" in my standards. As for Rosa, as my name says, I'm simply in love with her ! IoI

  • I see your point.I think I'm liking the video as opposed to the voice. While I said I enjoy this one,it's more like I can't believe

his tone. Rosa was my grandmother's favorite and I am in possession of correspondence between them. Your knowledge of technique is impressive. With the

"mixed head/chest" comment you make me wonder;did Corelli ever sing this? That was his technique too, right?

  • How lucky you are ! I would cherish such a belonging as the most priceless treasure ! :) As for Corelli, no, he used a full chest piano/pianissimo sound tremendously sustained. Tagliavini and Lauri Volpi had this sweety falsettone too.

  • Sometimes, he was fading a diminuendo into falsetto but his technique is so perfect that you cannot hear the passagio and his pianissimi are so full that it is hard to say wether they are in chest or head.

  • My ears tell me that about Corelli, but in Opera News years ago I read that about his technique. After I wrote you I went and looked and couldn't find him singing this aria. His technique was different somehow, though, wasn't it.

  • This aria is too light for him. He could have sung it of course but he would have seemed and elephant in a porcelain store IoI. No, WE are right : he mainly uses full chest mezza voce - sometimes switching to head voice at the end of the smorzando - but not this constant Gigli-like falsettone all the way through. Léopold Simoneau is a great Nadir too ! Have already heard him ?

  • You had answered my question before I wrote again but I didn't see it. Sorry. It must be obvious to you that I'm not well-versed in these matters. Thank you for your help.

I went and looked for Franco singing this aria and couldn't find it. After a few seconds of hearing him sing another,I'm GLAD he didn't sing this one. I might still have the article I mentioned and I will see what it said. Isn't this U-tube thing great for us?

  • I'm glad too he never gave a try ! His Roméo is terrible, so his Nadir ?! IoI I've checked Simoneau, he has several videos but not in Nadir. Indeed, YT is a gold mine for us ! Greetings, Didier

  • I agree with you.

  • Gigli is the only one along with the lighter and idiomatic Simoneau and Vanzo, to give fully justice to the lyricism of this aria, with his miraculous sweet, creamy and morbida mezza voce, with irresistible smorzandi on the 2 high Bf. The others, who sing this aria in full chest, mistake Nadir for Manrico and are monochromatic and with no dynamics. Brava, maestro Gigli !

  • I think that another picture must be put there. The present one is from Paglicci, is it not?

  • Absolute perfection. Makes me cry every time.

  • during the warr, as a soldier on first lines , I used to listen his voice in short meace moments. You have feel that You cant go to hell, and that paradise is garanted.

    vanja, croatia

  • keleminovec - I was so moved to read your comment and glad that you survived the first lines during war. This song is heavenly and convinces me again and again that some music is truly transcendental.

I have to cry whenever I hear it. Be blessed and many thanks - your words reminded me that we are all connected and that paradise is granted.

  • No one could sing like the great Gigli who had absolute control of his voice. This is known as Chiaroscuro, a lost art. His teacher was the renowned Enrico Rosati who taught James Melton, and Mario Lanza among others

  • he uses head voice and very well mixed voice...but i think here its not falsetto.

    great singing

It is NOT "falsetto". It's the very difficult "mixed sound", where we have a perfect combination of chest and head voices.

  • Beautiful but it's not fair to the other tenors: it's a whole step down (in G minor instead of A minor)!

  • So... beautiful... his voice was really still quite fresh here. And he displays all that breathtaking piano-in-altissimo that we all love.

  • SUPERB!! I have never heard this better sung.

  • Bravo! Bravíssimo!

  • A really velvet voice. His technique is unique. I think that Gigli is the king of lyric tenors.

  • Divino!

  • Grande Gigli!

  • makes me cry... so beautiful!

  • Superbe! mais un peu sucré...

  • One of the greatest performances of the twentieth century! Bravo! TY.

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music,

I love Gigli, his voice is timeless.

  • AWesome! Bravo! TY.

  • gigli is unique, he seems to be singin with a fake voice, but it's obvious he sings with real voice, bravo!!!! all is perfectly received as clear as water.

  • That's mezza voce - rings right out to the back of the house. Gigli was the master.

  • divino Gigli stupendo il pezzo.

  • bravi gigli...

  • NO lyric tenor of the young ones today are even close to his beauty of voice it does not exist today at all and if so they wreck it with lousy magnified recordings, progress sometimes stinks, Bravo Gigli.

  • 1925?! Awsome! Thanks for uploading!

  • Gorgeous. It really suits Gigli's mellifluous tone.

  • this is my favourite version so far!

i like how he sings the highest note a little on the flat side.

does anyone have the libretto in Italian? i can only find the original in French...

  • Che bellissima voce e bella canzone! Bravo Gigli.

  • A me personalmente piace comunque molto.

  • I will not live long enough to hear this sung so beautifully.

  • Thanks ! Its great version.

  • thanks!

  • Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!!!

  • Thank you! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!!

  • no one seems to mention nikolai gedda! his version is beautiful too, check it out.

  • Extraordinaire, quelle technique, un contrôle parfait. Mon Nadir préféré est Gedda.

  • Great singing and we also see how orchestras used to accompony singers not vice versa:-)

  • Gedda also had a great performance of this aria, but couldn't find it in utube :(

  • One of several glorious performances recorded. How can one say that Gigli,Kraus,or Bjorling is by far the best. They are all sensational!
