Ok, So Han and everyone on the Falcon have to deal with the blockade of Imperial ships surrounding Hoth but Luke doesn't? I thought the idea of the blockade was to keep any and all Rebel ships from getting off the planet.
@Mayeur000Donz True. CGI--like anything with computers---is very good at automated tasks. So now it is possible to quickly create anything in QUANTITY (instead of 1 or 2 aliens, the fx tech can now create thousands just with a few mouse clicks). But the QUALITY still requires the work and inspiration of a human being. But the best super computer cannot duplicate 100% the thousands of degrees of shade and coloring of "real" objects---thus it will always will look fake.
Anyone tell me if you know this. Does the music get composed AFTER the filming to match the film? Or is it composed BEFORE the filming and the video is edited to match it?
@MTWJ It's almost always composed after the first edit of the movie is ready, so that the composer can have a chance to see the movie and develop musical ideas appropriate for the story.
I remember reading that the very first StarWars movie back in 1977 was previewed (without music) by an audience of 20th Cent. Fox execs, and they HATED the film! According to Alan Ladd's wife, they saw it again after John Williams' music was added. And the difference was like day and night. It saved the film.
Imagine if Lucas had made this movie today with the freedom he has? There would have been 15 things going at once and about 50 million more asteroids.
Pause it right at 2:46. Keep pausing it and un pausing it quickly before 2:47 and you'll see a white tennis shoe fly right at the screen. Immediately before 2:47 it's on the bottom of the screen and can be seen perfectly. Beside it is also a potato.
It's strange that in the universe of Force-users, lightsabers and Death Stars my fav character is Han Solo. .. Excuse me.. he's got light speed?! Oh well.
In the asteroid scene, one of the asteroids is actually a shoe. The rumor is that George Lucas asked the SFX people to redo the scene so many times that they got annoyed and one of them threw in their shoe.
@jdkeen6172:46 white object on the left of the screen is a sneaker, potato is directly in front of it. It goes by fast - might be easier to do frame-by-frame on a DVD player.
I hate to be one of those typical guys that hates on the prequel trilogy but this asteroid scene is about a bajillion zillion times better than the one from episode 2. It just feels more alive and the other one is just sort of dull, although great visuals.
When the AFI awarded Han Solo with the Greatest Hero Of All Time status, I wondered why they didn't pick Luke Skywalker. When I saw this scene, everything made sense. Plus, this has to be the greatest movie chase scene of all time.
@DaedraAzura I've always been fond of the YT-2400. The Outrider has got nice curves. 0.75 hyperdrive ain't too shabby. But she ain't nearly as fast as Han's.
@DarthVader1Anakin Haha no it's actually really a shoe. One of the people at ILM was apperantly so fed up with George Lucas making them redo a lot of the special effects in that scene that he decided to use a shoe for one of the asteroids. You will see it when they fly towards the big asteroid and the Falcon makes a spin upside-down, it's the second asteroid that comes flying by the screen (the left asteroid). Warning though: once you've seen it you will never see an asteroid again but a shoe :D
we've got these great quad laser cannons we used in the previous movie... so lets all sit in the cockpit and be backseat drivers while a giant ship and a bunch of small ones try to blow us to smithereens :-/
What always confused me is how the hell did those two farther Star Destroyers close the distance with the one chasing Han so damn fast? In one shot, they're in the distance; five shots later all three are colliding.
not a lot of people notice it, but at 2:10 there is what is called the most gruesome death in the original trilogy. after the tie fighter is smashed, you can see the pilot flying out into space on fire
@treeisabuheh That's part of the asteroid that is a bit 'glitched' out by that times special effects. It's not the pilot. :) It wouldn't even make sense for the pilot to fly out like that after the TIE-fighter completely smashes against the asteroid in that way.
@Thebassjunk dude...it has arms, legs, and a head. that's the most realistic glitch since NAM! plus when is star wars about making sense? a pilot flies out of a ship in episode three
@treeisabuheh I'm sorry, you were right. I checked the DVD and there it's quite obvious that it was the pilot... here it just looks like some glitched fire lol. Anyway it still doesn't make a lot of sense when the TIE fighter is flying directly into the asteroid, opposite to RotS where the ship blows from enemy fire.
the prequels needed a Han Solo- somebody willing to put their life on the line WHEN THE GOING GOT TOUGH- without Jedi powers. Who rescued Luke in -50 temps? HAN SOLO- no Jedi powers- big balls of steel
@drksideofthewal No I don't think so. The commander said "Take evasive action" which means "Avoid". So I think they stumbled around due to the maneuver of steering downwards - which, if you know about inertia, I suppose, can get them off balance (like turning in a car, passengers get pushed to the side).
Co za asy! No but seriously, best music in any of the Star Wars films and one of my all-time favourite chase scenes. Especially for a film from 1980, this still looks and listens damn impressive even by todays standards.
@Doorhenge, It doesn't surprise me to hear that Lucas would say that about the original trilogy. It seems like he not only didn't contribute as much to the OT as he's given credit for, apparently he didnt' even *understand* them. (Midochlorians to explain the force, etc.) One of the things I love best about the originals is the gritty, "lived in" look of everything. That includes not having crazy color contrasts. Lucas' opinion sort of explains why the prequels look a bit like Lazytown.
The prequels action felt like just a lot of plastic noise thrown in the viewer's face. Here, the combination of actual film being used, actual models and craftsmanship (and an actual director and screenwriter to boot), it results in something that is not just special effects and noise. I mean, here we have an action scene of a spaceship being chased by other spaceships, but instead of "dumb," it feels timeless, romantic and soulful.
@stankbeeze TIE fighters suck. Compared to X-wings, TIE fighters are worse all around: Less guns, No defelctor shield generators, no hyperdrives - you would've thought that the empire would spend a bit more on it's most basic Naval asset!
@NaviLight Yes in this case I thought it was a proximity alarm, but it's used in the other films such as on Mustafar when Obi Wan and Anakin are fighting and the shields for the facility are lowered (or something)
@mishthefish76, exactly. Now compare it to the asteroid field chase in Attack of the Clones. Empires is romantic and epic. The scene from Clones looks like some cheap video game.
I'll give you two words that sum it up: HAN SOLO! Look at him taking control in the thick of overwhelming chaos, like a boss. Even while the commanders of Imperial Star Destroyers lose their cool, he has a plan. Watching him play fate like his mark - that's why it's awesome!
@LionAbove, not a single damn character in the prequel trilogy had memorable and likeable personalities like the original movies did. Not a damn one. I was going say that no one comes close to Han Solo, but that's a given. Hell, no one in the prequels comes close to that toad thing outside Jaba's Palace.
@WastedPo I'd almost entirely agree with you. I sat down and gave it careful consideration, Ewan McGregor tried as Obi-Wan, but ultimately he wasn't as good. Then I remembered Qui-Gon and Maul. Maul works entirely on the unquestioning henchman formula - the same way Boba Fett did - and Qui-Gon just because he's Liam Neeson. Have you ever seen him play a role badly? None beat Solo though. ;)
@mishthefish76 two reasons, with the star destroyers taking up most of the screen space, it metaphroically shows the vastness of the empire, secondly, the challenges that han and the fanily face from the tie fighters, a malfuncitoning hyper drive, and asteroids, continually raises the stakes and erases our expectations as audience members of the infalibility of futuristic space technology (we typically assume that tehcnology always works perfectly in space.

None beat Solo though. ;)

@mishthefish76 agree. For some reason those crappy little models look way cooler than Playstation graphics

The music from 2:05 onwards is just brilliance. It's the best in the series, and that's saying ALOT.
