I like this one over Super R-Type, due to this one being more colorful and crisp, as opposed to Super R-Type's more grittier look, not knocking Super R-Type, though.
@TheCastellan I'd say that Super R-Type is a lot more colorful that this and the music is better too. This does have some parts from the arcade that the SNES port lacks but I'll take it over this anyday.
brilliant conversion... im just amazed at the first level and how they got that parallax working without making the background a washed out 2 colour thing. Or worse a gradient bg. Great music too :)
Most tracks don't sound that great or even good. Haven't play the arcade game in ages, so I don't know if it's just this port or if the original sounded like these. But I'm guessing it's this ports rendition of those tracks.
I do not understand how people can say that R-Type 1 has the better music. R-Type 1 has an awesome *title* music, but the *ingame* music sucks compared to R-Type 2. I especially like the level 3 and 4 music.
If you run this in WinUAE set to NTSC, most of the slowdown is eliminated. However, the score is cut off on the bottom. I'm guessing the same thing would happen in a real NTSC Amiga, though I could be wrong.
ARC Developments? HMMmm they programmed the Spectrum/Amstrad versions of the 1st R-Type. I remember playing this and being appalled at the sluggishness and the insanely sadistic level of difficulty. The playability of the forerunner is absent from this sequel.
From what I've seen of this video this is a very faithful conversion of the arcade original. Unless there is a lag on the controls, I can't see how this could be considered poor in any way.
@pumpum800 I actually sold it years ago, stupid mistake, but well, my emulator runs almost 100% now. I updated the emulator, and problem was solved. Also, playing amiga games with fully programable playstation controllers is not bad either.
rtype 1 on amiga was miles better especially the music n level design. this felt more like a copy paste of r-type 1. the levels looked similar tool.....
dios, este fue uno de los juegazos que mas recuerdo y abre jugado de mi inmortal amiga500,graficos mas que correctos y musica increible, fue una magnifica conversion
Virtually every review of this game commented on how the graphics had been improved over the first one. In my opinion, the first game's graphics were better. These looked too much like a cartoon. The little weapon pods looked like bobble-heads.
It's funny, I first played this only a little while ago on Amiga and thought "well, it's ok but it has a lot of niggly flaws"
Then I play the arcade original and find that all the problems with the Amiga version are there and actually worse :O
The music was even lower quality, the gameplay even more trial and error based, the double charge shot even more temperamental (It even resets itself!! so you actually have to memorize the exact spot you need to start charging way in advance)
sheesh. that explosion, such a crap sound. one of the many things ruining the vibe of this game for me, something about it all just "felt" all wrong...like that loading screen picture of the craft, and the title screen picture - that doesn't look like a faithful enough representation of the ship for me, totally ruins the suspension of disbelief. : /
Graphically, the Amiga version was said to be pixel-perfect, despite the reduction in on-screen colours. Soundwise, I preferred the Amiga version over the arcade original- proper PCM audio will always sound better than FM synthesis, especially when clean samples are used.
The game was sluggish in places (though nowhere near as bad as Super R-Type on the SNES) due to bad coding, which actually made it harder to play due to poor feedback from the controls when there was a lot of action on-screen.
The reality is the Amiga version of R-Type II is nowhere NEAR "pixel-perfect" compared to the arcade version. There's a significant difference in graphics between arcade and Amiga, and not *just* in amount of on-screen colors. It's the detail too.
The PS1 version of R-Type II found in the R-Types compilation, now THAT is nearly pixel-perfect, except for the screen resolution.
i remember playing R-type (1) from somewhere... on a pc, but it definitly wasnt from an amiga package or anything, is there an internet copy or something?

I say this was a terrible port of the arcade R-Type II, just like the first R-Type on Amiga.
In both cases, Amiga could've done better. Just get R-Types for PS1, it's got perfect ports of both games.
airraideagle 3 years ago 2
You have to remember that the Amiga wasn't as powerful as a custom arcade machine...
retronostalgic 3 years ago
Yeh and get a Dreamcast to play Sega Model II games. What a stupid comment saying the PS1 has perfect ports of a 68000 based 16bit arcade board
MadCommodore 2 years ago
You can download the MAME emulator and play the arcade original (plus 1000's more arcade games) on your PC.
You will need the R-Type ROM which doesn't come with it because it's illegal, but there are plenty of sites out there with the ROM for download.
