  • wow didnt kown there was a 2

  • I like this one over Super R-Type, due to this one being more colorful and crisp, as opposed to Super R-Type's more grittier look, not knocking Super R-Type, though.

  • @TheCastellan I'd say that Super R-Type is a lot more colorful that this and the music is better too. This does have some parts from the arcade that the SNES port lacks but I'll take it over this anyday.

  • @RyuHayabusa06 The SNES version has some horrible slowdown though which is why I prefer to play this version.

  • Almost like Super R-Type.

  • @TheCastellan Super R-Type is the SNES port of R-Type II.

  • @Gunmetalhed No it's not. Different levels.

  • @satansam Yeah some levels are different but the game is a modified version of R-Type II.

  • Katakis is better

  • wow i only played the Game Boy version when i was a kid, excellent graphics here.

  • @100Modem The Arcade Version looks even better!

  • brilliant conversion... im just amazed at the first level and how they got that parallax working without making the background a washed out 2 colour thing. Or worse a gradient bg. Great music too :)

  • Most tracks don't sound that great or even good. Haven't play the arcade game in ages, so I don't know if it's just this port or if the original sounded like these. But I'm guessing it's this ports rendition of those tracks.

  • I do not understand how people can say that R-Type 1 has the better music. R-Type 1 has an awesome *title* music, but the *ingame* music sucks compared to R-Type 2. I especially like the level 3 and 4 music.

  • If you run this in WinUAE set to NTSC, most of the slowdown is eliminated. However, the score is cut off on the bottom. I'm guessing the same thing would happen in a real NTSC Amiga, though I could be wrong.

  • ARC Developments? HMMmm they programmed the Spectrum/Amstrad versions of the 1st R-Type. I remember playing this and being appalled at the sluggishness and the insanely sadistic level of difficulty. The playability of the forerunner is absent from this sequel.

  • Pwok! Pwok! ..... Kwa-bla-bla!

  • I prefer R-Type III....

  • From what I've seen of this video this is a very faithful conversion of the arcade original. Unless there is a lag on the controls, I can't see how this could be considered poor in any way.

  • @SamusDrake This is certainly a decent conversion - i like how the music seems a bit "Heavier".

  • Can anybody help me? When i play this on my WinUAE emulator i have a vertical black bar in the parallax backgrounds. How can i get rid of this??

  • @SjpelleHelle

    buy a real Amiga.

  • @pumpum800 I actually sold it years ago, stupid mistake, but well, my emulator runs almost 100% now. I updated the emulator, and problem was solved. Also, playing amiga games with fully programable playstation controllers is not bad either.

  • Love the deep explosions on this. They really do give the game a different, more heavy feel.

  • i love the music of the level 2

  • rtype 1 on amiga was miles better especially the music n level design. this felt more like a copy paste of r-type 1. the levels looked similar tool.....

  • i prefer super r-type the music in this game even owns the arcade version ! and it has the better boss music!

  • @SusakeKes This or Super R-type ?

  • this game just kicks ass

  • dios, este fue uno de los juegazos que mas recuerdo y abre jugado de mi inmortal amiga500,graficos mas que correctos y musica increible, fue una magnifica conversion

  • maybe its me but i dont think that this is that bad but not as good as the first its far better than a master system game

  • this game musics and sound effects are painful.

i feel like i'm watching some bad sega master system game

  • so why are you looking? ignorant

  • I really love the music of the 3rd and 4th levels. Total kickass. First one is a little too annoying, second is cool, but 3rd and 4th are the best.

  • Virtually every review of this game commented on how the graphics had been improved over the first one. In my opinion, the first game's graphics were better. These looked too much like a cartoon. The little weapon pods looked like bobble-heads.

  • It's funny, I first played this only a little while ago on Amiga and thought "well, it's ok but it has a lot of niggly flaws"

Then I play the arcade original and find that all the problems with the Amiga version are there and actually worse :O

The music was even lower quality, the gameplay even more trial and error based, the double charge shot even more temperamental (It even resets itself!! so you actually have to memorize the exact spot you need to start charging way in advance)

  • Wasn't the Level III tune from this version of R-TYPE II reused in R-TYPE III: THE THIRD LIGHTNING?

  • Also, i love how rough and scratchy the boss theme in the amiga port sounds.

  • Makes it seem a bit more epic, actually.

  • Level 4 was embarassingly short

  • explosion at 1:19 - "bla BLAH BLAH"...

sheesh. that explosion, such a crap sound. one of the many things ruining the vibe of this game for me, something about it all just "felt" all wrong...like that loading screen picture of the craft, and the title screen picture - that doesn't look like a faithful enough representation of the ship for me, totally ruins the suspension of disbelief. : /

  • If you played the game in NTSC mode you avoided slowdowns.. very good conversion

  • The yellow R-9s didn't make it out at the end! nnnnnNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • Graphically, the Amiga version was said to be pixel-perfect, despite the reduction in on-screen colours. Soundwise, I preferred the Amiga version over the arcade original- proper PCM audio will always sound better than FM synthesis, especially when clean samples are used.

The game was sluggish in places (though nowhere near as bad as Super R-Type on the SNES) due to bad coding, which actually made it harder to play due to poor feedback from the controls when there was a lot of action on-screen.

  • The reality is the Amiga version of R-Type II is nowhere NEAR "pixel-perfect" compared to the arcade version. There's a significant difference in graphics between arcade and Amiga, and not *just* in amount of on-screen colors. It's the detail too.

The PS1 version of R-Type II found in the R-Types compilation, now THAT is nearly pixel-perfect, except for the screen resolution.

  • Apparently this was a very accurate port of the arcade machine except for being a bit on the sluggish side. Still rather good though...

  • I remember the sluggishness of this port. Quite frustrating.

  • Impressive. Well played.

  • Holy **** on the second boss! I never thought about getting over it and letting my Force hurt it. Excellent work! 5/5

  • I say this was a terrible port of the arcade R-Type II, just like the first R-Type on Amiga.

In both cases, Amiga could've done better. Just get R-Types for PS1, it's got perfect ports of both games.

  • You have to remember that the Amiga wasn't as powerful as a custom arcade machine...

  • Yeh and get a Dreamcast to play Sega Model II games. What a stupid comment saying the PS1 has perfect ports of a 68000 based 16bit arcade board

  • You can download the MAME emulator and play the arcade original (plus 1000's more arcade games) on your PC.

You will need the R-Type ROM which doesn't come with it because it's illegal, but there are plenty of sites out there with the ROM for download.

  • Why hasn't this video got more views? It seems R-Type needs more love...

  • i remember playing R-type (1) from somewhere... on a pc, but it definitly wasnt from an amiga package or anything, is there an internet copy or something?

  • Now that was a great port. Love the fluid animations, music and graphics. Too bad it has some severe slowdowns.
