@KenranThePanda That's John Smothers, Frank's personal bodyguard. He was immortalized as "Bald-Headed John, King of the Plookers" in "Dong Work For Yuda" on the Joe's Garage album. Practically everything that came out of his mouth was just ... bizarre or plain wrong. He was hysterically and unintentionally funny, and Frank incorporated several of John's weird one-liners in other songs as well.
WOW!!! How good is the part at 2:33 after Bozzio plays a roll then Mars quickly connects and plays that wicked run. Oh what musicianship. So zoned in.
@UnwrittenPaul That's part of how zappa took musicians and showcased them by allowing them to do "their thing".part of why he's a genius.Besides a great R&B guy,he was a musical genius of an arranger of sounds and themes, A cover tune melody patcher. And a great avent garde composer.
that wicked run was a major arpeggio with the 7th but no 6th.
ive been listening to zappa for years, and this video has sparked an interest in tommy mars for me.
anyone notice how bad the bass playing is on this ? but in its place, i mean what else is he going to do while being continually locked into one key, poor guy . im not disrespecting him, or it in anyway.
I think it is because he's playing fretless so maybe it sounds out of tune at times, which I'm guessing is on purpose since you'd probably need good intonation to be in Zappa's band.
The braod at the biggining of this clip is aces. the interviewer must have asked her what she was doing at the concert and she retorts, "Are you kidding me, man? I LOVE Frank Zappa"
I never get tired of the assumption that chicks don't dig Zappa.
Not a big fan of Bozzio, but after watching this clip. He has my respect. Classic Zappa sound. Would be great to have George Duke play along side of the key player in this clip. Great musicians!
I'm bored of him now. I'll always love what he did with Frank, UK, MP and the Brecker Brothers, but in the last 10 years all that has changed is the size of his kit.
I think not, I think Bozzio plays "in the zone", i.e. on a higher level of perception - less thought and more instinct. And despite his mastery of his instrument, he keeps playing, always trying to better himself. Though for sure his improvements are less discernible now than the old days, it is natural that the higher levels of any art require progressively more time input as one goes through the ranks.
@eskimoposh I don't know if the plateau is "devastating" as much as it is nice. I think he deserves to finally decide "hey, this is what I like most" considering what he's done throughout his career.
MOTHERFUCKERS!!! If that's what Zappa meant by the original Mothers band, imagine what he must've thought about these animals! These guys can PLAY, and Bozzio is a beast! In the best possible way!
Frank did not smoke pot, but that doesn't say anything about his bandmates or tech crew. Plus, Frank abused caffeine and cigarettes regularly, and those are drugs, too, just not elicit drugs.
Frank did not let them smoke pot when they were with him. I'm not sure if that applies to tech crew but I somehow dont think he let them either. And he has a different opinion on coffee and cigarettes.
Could anyone imagine if someone decided in 2009 that they wanted to make a band like this, front all the cash them self for it, make all the lyrics/instrumental for it, set up all the touring sceduals, hire all the members, make them practice together day in and day out 10 hours a day and still want to perform, then through shear talent and a sound intelligent mind make it be successful...nope, we get bands like Nickleback and the Jonas brothers.A different time I guess.
Other countries (Cuba - no flames please) support their artists. Bands like Irakere, Issac Delgado and his Orchestra, Los Van Van and musicians like Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Horacio El Negro Hernandez, Chucho Valdez, Arturo Sandoval, Jimmy Branly, Melon, Changuito and on and on are a product in great part of being extremely well supported and educated.
In essence you're paid to rehearse even if there are no gigs. You have to keep your skill up to make "A-Band" lever for more gigs and $'s.

Fantastic. Mars is.......(words fail me)....
Bozzio's light work at 1:45 - he's really playing MUSIC not just drums and that sticks out. Deep understanding at such a young age.
That bass is ahead of its time. Might be more normal for current virtuosos now, but then? groundbreaker.
Think i'll just have to stamp my foot in envy like Rumplestiltkin until I split in two.
While listening to this, of course.
