  • A pound for a brown

  • @pakleglia I realized that a couple days and was gonna post that, you beat me to it! heh.

  • Haven't seen that in awhile! Brought back good memories.

  • Frank arranging Adrian's props? I think that's what warrants the handshake. Still cracks me up.

  • i love how every1 is jammin out and zappa's just fuckin chillin

  • Oh My Gawwwd I luuuv it!

  • Frank zappa was incredible music, check out dweezil

  • who is the bass player

  • 3:01-3:05 Most godly transition ever

  • Awesome stuff, Frank could put a band together, those guys were great. Zappa turned rock fans onto Fusion Jazz.

  • bozzio, O'hearn, Mars Improv.

  • I would give anything to know what Frank is telling Adrian at 3:40.

  • @weinerbongo

Hey you still can try asking Adrian!

  • WOW!

  • does anyone know where i can get glasses like Tommy Mars?!! and Zappa easily blows away any progressive band ive ever seen

  • Fantastic. Mars is.......(words fail me)....

Bozzio's light work at 1:45 - he's really playing MUSIC not just drums and that sticks out. Deep understanding at such a young age.

That bass is ahead of its time. Might be more normal for current virtuosos now, but then? groundbreaker.

Think i'll just have to stamp my foot in envy like Rumplestiltkin until I split in two.

While listening to this, of course.

  • Oh yes, Terry's hi-hat gets him hot!

  • the red dressed guy was his bodyguard

  • FUNKY SYNTH SHOUT 4:16

  • damn good FUNKY SYNTH SHOUT 4:16

  • KICKASS FUNKY SYNTH SHOUT 4:16

  • i'd like Zappa as father...

  • i'd like Zappa as father...

  • Does anyone know the date of this performance?

  • One of the best loose jams I have ever seen...awesome stuff. Mars is great.

  • Is it just me or is it that everyone who has played with Frank Zappa gone off to be really successfull? Just throwin that out there.

  • Who is the red dressed person talking at around 1:50? Saw him in some videos with Zappa but don't know who he is.

  • @KenranThePanda That's John Smothers, Frank's personal bodyguard. He was immortalized as "Bald-Headed John, King of the Plookers" in "Dong Work For Yuda" on the Joe's Garage album. Practically everything that came out of his mouth was just ... bizarre or plain wrong. He was hysterically and unintentionally funny, and Frank incorporated several of John's weird one-liners in other songs as well.

  • @KenranThePanda that's JOHN SMOTHERS , mythical frank's body guard :-))

  • only frank could attract a musical nutter like tommy mars!!...what a fat jam..there was a bit reminded me of pound for a brown.fuckin madness

  • that's some funky bass playin. the fretboards a sidewalk and he's a walkin lol

  • é o Adrian Bellew na guitarra?

  • more genius of all time!

  • fuck off this is shite music the pianist cant even fucking sing

  • Why comment when you clearly know less than nothing about music...Buttplug!!!

  • @aindoe He CAN sing. You just saw it on the video.

  • do i have to respect and love that bullshit???

  • Adrian Belew at the 3:37 mark? Woo Hoo!

  • bozzio is awesome the way he power plays his cymbals.

my favourite live line up of zappa.

pure energy in the music, i love it.

  • @chong3r How about Chad Whackerman !

  • Where can this be found

  • @sabbath231 Baby Snakes DVD

  • La liberté associée au génie!

  • Only disappointing thing is that Zappa doesn't kick in

  • Why no credit mention of Patrick O'Hearn??

  • @timrob62 He's amazing!

  • this is good. period.and good is high in my opinion.

  • they are fucked up off of somethin and yeah good is high :D

  • WOW!!! How good is the part at 2:33 after Bozzio plays a roll then Mars quickly connects and plays that wicked run. Oh what musicianship. So zoned in.

  • @UnwrittenPaul

yeah, once he got over some initial shock at the awesomeness of the fill.

2nd time around (3:00) he was ready for him though :D

  • @UnwrittenPaul wow yeah, i've seen this video dozens of times and never noticed that! thanks!:)

  • @UnwrittenPaul That's part of how zappa took musicians and showcased them by allowing them to do "their thing".part of why he's a genius.Besides a great R&B guy,he was a musical genius of an arranger of sounds and themes, A cover tune melody patcher. And a great avent garde composer.

that wicked run was a major arpeggio with the 7th but no 6th.

  • @UnwrittenPaul

U must listen carefully Bitches Brew or In a silent Way Sessions by Miles Davis that is the masterpiece of musicianship :)

  • any body knows what this concert is called or if theres any more clips of it?

  • Baby Snakes DVD

  • this was the halloween show i believe 1977 or 1979

  • That's Adrian Belew in the yellow jumpsuit!

  • He dresses up as WWII stewardess later :-)

  • Baby Snakes 77 like, exactly

  • you can see zappa writing some lines and showing them to bozzio, amazing!

  • you know you people dont even realize that this piece was not planed this was composed right on stage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats probally why its called ''improvisation''?

  • frank zappa sucks.

  • you obviously are a non brained yet living being.

  • u fail 2 understand... I sense that this "constant" is more than a horizontal line the infinity of his music. It is almost an amorphous --middle...not here nor là --not "déplacer" in anysense really....and cannot be that "meaning" its existence by the désintã©integration of the world matã©riel around them, and there is déplace

  • Yet I sense that this "constant" is more than a horizontal line à the infinity. • Your mother sucks! Zappa was our Modern day mozart. Heard of mozart?

  • But let me guess... Joey Jordison rules, right?

Grow a chin and a brain.

  • joey has nothing of danny carey, but joey still has talent among the greats

  • Two words: Prove it.

  • Comment removed

  • Naw, you suck.

  • isnt this an clip of baby snakes?..

  • That rocked (and swung) what genius

  • ive been listening to zappa for years, and this video has sparked an interest in tommy mars for me.

anyone notice how bad the bass playing is on this ? but in its place, i mean what else is he going to do while being continually locked into one key, poor guy . im not disrespecting him, or it in anyway.

  • I totally disagree with the bass playing comment.

  • He does a pretty good job throughout the show.

  • I think it is because he's playing fretless so maybe it sounds out of tune at times, which I'm guessing is on purpose since you'd probably need good intonation to be in Zappa's band.

  • I didn't notice any bad bass playing. I did notice that it has that fretless sound. Other than that, notta.

  • fucking genius...............

  • is the synth that he is using at 4:16 just a Prophet V with a sequencer hooked up to it?

  • No, it's a Minimoog.

  • hace tiempo que no me topaba con esto, cada vez suena mejor?

    juntate con lobos...

  • great guy ~ even likes dogs ~

  • Why are there so many shirtless people in Zappa videos? Is his music that hard to play or do the Mothers just like stripping?

  • It's probably because it's 500 f-ing degrees onstage.

  • Patrick O´Hearn - The true king of the fretless bass.

  • So nice! When I watch it it's always several time in a raw!!!!

  • i <3 Tommy Mars

  • Great Googilly!

  • when swines flew? how can anyone bash this? mister jeff berlin, thomas jefferson that wall. oh, by the way, which one's zapp?

  • grandi :-) che bei tempi

  • who knows what kind of synth tommy is using starting about 4:16?

  • The LORD MINIMOOG HIMSELF

  • there's a Prohet V also

  • guy on piano - what a freak :)

    nice show!

  • Tommy Mars

  • A freak with absolute ear. Pay more respect. Like him, only Hermeto Paschoal.

  • WHERE HAVE I BEEN...

  • The braod at the biggining of this clip is aces. the interviewer must have asked her what she was doing at the concert and she retorts, "Are you kidding me, man? I LOVE Frank Zappa"

I never get tired of the assumption that chicks don't dig Zappa.

  • Only the best chicks dig Zappa!

    LOL :)

  • I jus love da way deez copenhagens talk. . . . . Animal got his style from Bozzio.!!

  • MAESTRO wn, si en el segundo en que lo enfoca la camara comienza a deslumbrar wn... GRANDE GURÚ WN (y eso que ni toca la guitarra aqui)

  • blazing solos! Tommy Mars is the champion of the world!

  • Not a big fan of Bozzio, but after watching this clip. He has my respect. Classic Zappa sound. Would be great to have George Duke play along side of the key player in this clip. Great musicians!

  • how can you not like Bozzio? have you ever seen him live? He is a percussion master

  • Not necessarily being a drum master seems you like the way he play or his style. But obviously Terry was a monster even in young age...

  • yeah...but he's hit a devastating plateau.

I'm bored of him now. I'll always love what he did with Frank, UK, MP and the Brecker Brothers, but in the last 10 years all that has changed is the size of his kit.

  • :D... true...

  • I think not, I think Bozzio plays "in the zone", i.e. on a higher level of perception - less thought and more instinct. And despite his mastery of his instrument, he keeps playing, always trying to better himself. Though for sure his improvements are less discernible now than the old days, it is natural that the higher levels of any art require progressively more time input as one goes through the ranks.

  • @eskimoposh I don't know if the plateau is "devastating" as much as it is nice. I think he deserves to finally decide "hey, this is what I like most" considering what he's done throughout his career.

  • @eskimoposh

    bah, total garbage

  • 1:34

  • forgot to mention Patrick O'Hearn's amazing bass playing! :D i love baby snakes!!!

  • How hard can your nipples get. After that, none more hard. Fanfuckingtastic. XXX

  • MOTHERFUCKERS!!! If that's what Zappa meant by the original Mothers band, imagine what he must've thought about these animals! These guys can PLAY, and Bozzio is a beast! In the best possible way!

  • the camra man at 1:06 has a joint in his mouth and he looks just like cheech.

  • I doubt very highly that frank would let pot on his stage. Drugs just weren't his thing. Still good to get stoned too though. =D

  • Frank did not smoke pot, but that doesn't say anything about his bandmates or tech crew. Plus, Frank abused caffeine and cigarettes regularly, and those are drugs, too, just not elicit drugs.

  • Frank did not let them smoke pot when they were with him. I'm not sure if that applies to tech crew but I somehow dont think he let them either. And he has a different opinion on coffee and cigarettes.

  • there is always return to forever .chick corea

  • Chick Corea can lick my left testicle, fucking cult pushing insult to music.

  • Could anyone imagine if someone decided in 2009 that they wanted to make a band like this, front all the cash them self for it, make all the lyrics/instrumental for it, set up all the touring sceduals, hire all the members, make them practice together day in and day out 10 hours a day and still want to perform, then through shear talent and a sound intelligent mind make it be successful...nope, we get bands like Nickleback and the Jonas brothers.A different time I guess.

  • I guess too... no problem having jonas brothers, but the problem is i can barely find super-groups of real musicians around...

  • Well, I saw Zappa Plays Zappa a week back, and they did a pretty good job of fitting the bill :p. I applaud Dweezil.

  • You have to understand that when god invented republicans, he gave up on everything else.

    -Frank

  • Other countries (Cuba - no flames please) support their artists. Bands like Irakere, Issac Delgado and his Orchestra, Los Van Van and musicians like Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Horacio El Negro Hernandez, Chucho Valdez, Arturo Sandoval, Jimmy Branly, Melon, Changuito and on and on are a product in great part of being extremely well supported and educated.

In essence you're paid to rehearse even if there are no gigs. You have to keep your skill up to make "A-Band" lever for more gigs and $'s.

    Embargo?

  • Eccelso.

  • soooooo awesome

  • tommy mars !!...i get a chance 2 play that cat every sunday

  • You gig w/ Tommy?

  • john smothers!

  • hahahha john snothers, never saw him talk before

  • i like that one tremendously! even the bass solo!

i continue to aspire to this level of musicianship... and it remains as unattainable as ever. thanks for sharing this.attainable as ever.

  • Was it Arthur Barrow on bass?

  • Patrick O'Hearn

  • Christ! Terry's drumming is to die for! Just fucking awesome!

  • 1:36

  • Is the Baby Snakes album this concert in a non-visual format?
