Wayne took a major dive, he was frustrated for the way the Islanders played against him, he got hit, and he never liked being hit. I would have loved to see him play in the 70's LOL!
@skyroe2 I always thought so too, really, I always liked Battlin' Billy/Smitty partly 'cause I thought he was tough - he & Dryden were my favorite goalies - so, seriously, why didn't he drop his gloves and put his hands up this time - to avoid a penalty? They had it won so who would have given a shit? That's the only part I don't get here....I'd be willing to bet that if he had, Gretzky would have skated away. (although, Semenko probably would have come running !) Just strikes me odd.
@craigandjolene smitty my idol growing up. if u look he really didnt fight in postseason cause he knew hurt team he was just so focused on winning that why he greatest playoff goalie ever
@skyroe2 ...Probably Smitty being smart, yeah...him or Roy would be the 2 greatest playoff money goalies ever, either could be #1 or 2, and although Dryden would be close, look at the team he had in front of him....can't forget Bernie Parent, either.
@skyroe2 Well, consider how much the game overall has since evolved,, too, and yes you're right, the goalies are better - as are the shooters, forwards and defensemen - their composite sticks vs. the wood sticks Dryden and Smitty had to face were comparably hard for that time, too - they'd have to be at least 50% faster and more agile - the game is incredibly fast now compared to back then, too, so... so are the goalies.
@tommyhendo Yep, LOL, the entire Islanders team pwned all the Oilers, it's true, it's DAMN true; the Isles dominated like no-one's business in those days...different story a year later, though...
Edmonton got lucky, wimpy division playoffs and the Islanders got old, its to bad as Islanders where the last true Dynasty in hockey history, do your math!
@leverwork1 Oh, I know the math and I know the Isles were the last dynasty, but like you said yourself: they were just a little too old , and so - a year later, it was over.
@craigandjolene I didn't actually buy it, I read about 20 pages of it in a book store when it first came out. Besides gretz, I saw his comments on scraps with Tim Hunter, Playfair and later on how he was treated like shit by John Brophy in Toronto. I do own a copy of the Islanders book "countdown to a dynasty" which covers their glory years.
@lakeerie90s Interesting....The Isles were a force back then! I was joking ,, just ribbing ya about Semenko's book, though....no way that thing sold any more than 2 copies, maybe 3 if he had any siblings....who could even read!

Yeah, Gretz dove....but he stood right in front of Billy and challenged him...why didn't Smith drop his gloves ( or Gretz, for that matter? )
Shows me neither man really had as much balls as they claimed to have had.
