If you like the style more of one musician then an other, it does not make the one better over the other. There is of course the timing and techniques, but every good musician has those skills down. Some find Flea the best bass player others Mark King or Marcus Miller, the fact is they are all awesome doing their 'own' thing. Non can be labeled as ;best'.

These days, we have so much social media, so many ways to advertise, that even the most mediocre guy can have someone write shitty tunes for him and as long as the makeup artists do their job, they can have the ladies (read teenyboppers) all over him. Any pop artist of the past could've been as popular as Justin Bieber if they had all the sites that he has. But they didn't, and so we've forgotten them.

It seems strange to me that the bassists on the street are more talented than the bassists who make loads of money.

red hot chili peppers has a great bassist but usually the bass is drowned out and forgotten about.

It'd depend on bassist role in band, not on skills that he have. By the way, listen to Cliff Burton or Lemmy from Motörhead. :)
