@trueblu8 otocinclus affinis, oto cats for short, and that fish definitely dsnt clean fish poop lol, why would a bottom feeder eat poop when food is readily available that the other fish' miss?
That's a siamese algae eater, not an otocinclus, or as you say "oto cat." Those can get up to a foot long and will attach to your fish if food in the tank becomes scarce.
Hi Bettamaster, i am impressed with your discus quality within in a 10gallon tank. They stay happy and glowing! I just wonder beside purifying the water with filter, do you add any other treatment to the water? like discus colour enhancing additive or iodine etc?? Thank you =)
@SWAT9019 The black background aquarium paper goes a long way. Some of it is just the camera work in this video too, it's really not hidden all that well.
My heart breaks everytime I see this vid. It might be okay now, but i'd bet my life that promblems will arise in the future. I'm skeptical if you are even using RODI water, or atleast make a sump for them or better yet make that 10gal the sump...avid discus owner here.
some people here are going to bitch and complain, saying you "cruel" and "dont konw your stuff". as far as i can see, your fish are healthy. your are doing everything right. water is clean. your tank is small, so what. they fish are happy and colorful. the tank is a bit small in the long run,but if they can move around and are eating, i see no problem with it.
i just got my new 55 gallons with sands(black-white) for cichlid. i washed the sand like 5-6 times. i cut the power of filter and air pomp. i have 11 cichlid in 55 gallons. after 2-3 hours, its still cloudy. what is the best way to make the water clean? reply please
you dont have a otocinlous you have a flying fox is it was an otto cat it would be sucked on the of ur tank and its top fin would be father back and if it was young or probaly even older it wouldnt be that big
The description clearly states this is a temporary tank for new fish--a quarantine tank. It's probably too late, but please don't put discus in a 10 gallon as a permanent home. They get way too big, need way too high of water quality and need to school with others of their kind that you definitely couldn't fit in that small of a space.
@queenseleven1690 Yes! Angel fish and discus can live together peacefully. I too have a 10 gallon discus/angel tank. Its actually kind of similar to the bettamasters tank. Just click on my name and take a look...
@mattsoccer20 well his discus are very small babies, you will need atleast a fifty five for discus but most people go with a hundred gallon to stock the tank with more fish, so i wouldnt because a eight inch discus wont be happy in a ten
Not true. There is plenty of new data that supports this combination. Selective breeding and new advancements in the hobby have made this possible. You may have heard about the supposed 'incurable' parasite angel fish can spread to discus, but that is no longer a problem due to selective breeding. Use of RODI water and UV sterilizers also further reduce the risk.
i just got my new tank set up and i added 2 Angelfish one yellow and one black and yellow my new tank is a 25 gallon and i'm moving my crayfish in to the 10 gallon and getting another crayfish in with her
great job man, very good setup for a 10 gallon. Just to let you know, putting plants in the front like micro sword and anubias nana or "dwarf" anubias, help to keep it from looking bare. Major props on keeping fish like discus alive in a 10 gallon, i wanted them in my 55 im getting but decided to get agressive fish :D can't wait to watch em eat goldfish. how much total percentage water changes do you do a week? Im planning 2 20 % changes on my 55 a week. I try 5 20% on my 5.5. good job man.

It's a sign of stress/heightened sense of alertness. The stripes are more pronounced when there are people too close to the tank. When I'm further away, the stripes disappear.
@TheBettaMaster ok so theres not much i can do about the stripes? his the only discus i got in the tank with other fish aswell so that might be the other reason? thanks for your reply =)
hey there, very beautiful and clean tank =) i'd just like to ask you a question about your discus, i see that your discus have vertical stripes on them, is that a sign of stress or sickness? cause my discus have the same vertical stripes on them............ please get back to me asap
The water does not matter. the angel fish and diskus will each grow over4.5 inches! Right now it is fine but as they grow you will need to upgrade! sorry :(
Actually, It's all about the water. That is the most important aspect. Why do you think fish stores are able to keep many fish inside of a tank for display? Exactly, frequent water changes and the use of RODI water keep ammonia and nitrite/nitrate levels in check. As I have mentioned earlier, this is a temporary home only. My angelfish have already exceeded 5 inches, and my discus are getting close. Stay tuned!
Ya actually 10g per fish would suffice while they are still growing but ideally it would be 20g per discus. (Sorry I dont know about angels but i would think 10-15 per adult would be fine.
but i hope your planing on getting a much bigger tanks for those fish. most people would agree that a 20 gallon tank is to small for just ONE anglefish. please do the right thing and get those beautiful fish a bigger tank :)

is this tank and the tank logan's in a saltwater or freshwater tank because i was thinking of adding sand to my tank which is full of small goldfish. some of my goldfish died because of the gravel getting stuck in their bodies when they eat.
Wut is the best filtration for discus, i wana get some in my 30g but am not sure if i shud add another filter, i have a rena smart filter that is good up to about 50g HELP!!!!
I think your rena filter is sufficient, but you should take additional steps to keep the water quality good as well. Use of filtered water, siphoning wastes, and frequent water chemistry tests are always a plus.
Not true, but they say each discus shud have 10g, but petland is stupid, their advice usually misleads, i recomend big Al's or even petsmart in better
what food are you feeding them? i have 10 leopard snake skin but they are nowhere as nice as yours. they are till small so if I feed them the right food, then they can be nicer. thanks...
Hi man .. I have one tank with the size -> 95 cm * 45 cm * 50 cm and I wounder if it's okay with 2 discus in there?? I have same sand as u but in black and I have 3 angelfish in there :) .. I have many plants and roots :) .. I had 2 discus before but at that time I had malawi sand ... so they died :-(
How much volume does the tank hold? In general, you should have at least 5 gallons per discus (juvenile). It sounds like your tank should be big enough, but how big are your angelfish? If you want to keep them together, try to get discus that are larger then your angelfish... otherwise your discus may get picked on.
Not entirely true. There is now lots of information that supports the compatibility of the 2 fish. There are still those who feel angels and discus should not be kept together, but a lot of this is attributed to a outdated data about a refractory discus disease that is extremely rare and no longer an issue due to commercial breeding. You are welcome to believe what you want, but all of the hobbyists I've ever consulted with feel this combination is fine.
i have 2 angel fish in my 10 gallon tank, with tetra sperae, the problem is that the tetra nipped the angel's fins! :( , on of them almost lost all the top fin, it got realy ugly but i must continue to take care of the angels! it doesn't matter if theyr ugly, i have my hopes of the fins growing back! geting a 50 gallon tank this october 24 :D
hi im interested in getting discus i also have a ten gallon. But i will hopefully have a 55 by 2010 comes. If you could tell me how difficult they are to take care of that would be great, thanks.
It's not easy taking care of discus in a small tank, you would have to change the water pretty frequently and the slightest imbalance can be a big issue. This 10 gallon tank is only a temporary home until my aquascape is complete in my larger tank. However, if you really want to do it, it's not ultra hard either... just requires a bit more attention than normal.
when will your larger tank be done...like your videos a lot...logan rules!!! i want a crayfish too but my 10g is full of fish already and what system are you using for your larger tank since your placing live plants?
I'm not sure when it'll be done. It's taking me longer then I expected to get decent driftwood and rocks to decorate it. I have a few live plants in the tank right now, there are some aqua ferns next to the lava rock and in the left rear of the tank.
very beautiful discus! i dont care about the size of your tank.. i have 3 discus in my 20 gallon, but just actually updated to a 40 breeder... again gorgeous discus!
i finally got that marbled crayfish =D o and logan would be just fine in here because the discus will tend to scare it off with their sheer size and all and they tend to leave catfishes and suckerfishes alone for some odd reason =D
Cool. Finding a crayfish that will leave your fish alone is like striking gold. All the great cleaning action with no risk to your fish. Wish I could find something like that, Sam is the most passive crawfish I have. He'll leave the tetra and catfish alone, but will go after discus immediately. Go figure.
I'm not sure if it'll get use to you. From what I have read, the discus are most comfortable in schools of 6 fish. Do you plan on adding more to your tank eventually? My discus were frightened around me initially too, but they were use to me after a day's time. It might be a good idea to add some stresscoat to the tank.
I moved Logan to another tank (will post more footage eventually), and I gave my bettas to my parents. I've been breeding bettas for 20+ years and decided it was time to try something new, so here are the discus. I don't think it's too small either, Rocky Mountain Discus recommends 1 discus per 5 gallons of water.
Go buy Parasite Clear Tank Buddies. you can find them in Petco, use it for up to 4 to 6 weeks, to be sure you get rid of all the parasites. The best would be Metro-Pro, but it's a bit pricey.
Thanks. I feed them blood worms from time to time, but no beef hearts yet. I've read great things about beef hearts, but don't want to risk fouling the water in a tank this size. I also use Sera discus granules and Tetramin granules.
I feed mine frozen Blood Worms and Beef Hearts in the mornings then in the evening i give them Tetra ColorBits Tropical Granules. I've notice with the Colorbits when I don't have Charcoals in my filter the water in the tank will be sort of turn pink it's because of the Colorbits haha... I gotta put the Charcoals back in the filter.
i really don't understand how u can keep ur sand soo clean

I purchased them from a local pet store. They are usually pretty common and easy to find.

hey finally got a video on my tank =D its got angel fishys to =D ( but mine look a little better ;] )

i finally got that marbled crayfish =D o and logan would be just fine in here because the discus will tend to scare it off with their sheer size and all and they tend to leave catfishes and suckerfishes alone for some odd reason =D

Cool. Finding a crayfish that will leave your fish alone is like striking gold. All the great cleaning action with no risk to your fish. Wish I could find something like that, Sam is the most passive crawfish I have. He'll leave the tetra and catfish alone, but will go after discus immediately. Go figure.

Man that's nice. Your fishes look healthy and your water is so clear.

hey betta master
my discus are about half the size of yours and hes terrifued of me
whenever i get close to the tank he swims away
do you think hell get used to me
dadecountyalan 2 years ago
I'm not sure if it'll get use to you. From what I have read, the discus are most comfortable in schools of 6 fish. Do you plan on adding more to your tank eventually? My discus were frightened around me initially too, but they were use to me after a day's time. It might be a good idea to add some stresscoat to the tank.

i dont think its to small but what happened to your bettas i really liked and logan
f00tballkid84 2 years ago
I moved Logan to another tank (will post more footage eventually), and I gave my bettas to my parents. I've been breeding bettas for 20+ years and decided it was time to try something new, so here are the discus. I don't think it's too small either, Rocky Mountain Discus recommends 1 discus per 5 gallons of water.

Very nice. One of my Oscars died cause of an internal parasite :( and it seems like my red oscar has it 2, he lost his apetite abd bit swimming much
FJqattan 2 years ago
Sorry to hear. How were you able to determine that it was an internal parasite?
TheBettaMaster 2 years ago
White stringy poop, his body shape was changing, it looked really weird, lost his apetite and used to sit on the gravel and not move at all
FJqattan 2 years ago
Go buy Parasite Clear Tank Buddies. you can find them in Petco, use it for up to 4 to 6 weeks, to be sure you get rid of all the parasites. The best would be Metro-Pro, but it's a bit pricey.

Are you feeding them Beef Hearts and Bloodworm as well? Nice set up =o)
Pellegrino80 2 years ago
Thanks. I feed them blood worms from time to time, but no beef hearts yet. I've read great things about beef hearts, but don't want to risk fouling the water in a tank this size. I also use Sera discus granules and Tetramin granules.
TheBettaMaster 2 years ago
I feed mine frozen Blood Worms and Beef Hearts in the mornings then in the evening i give them Tetra ColorBits Tropical Granules. I've notice with the Colorbits when I don't have Charcoals in my filter the water in the tank will be sort of turn pink it's because of the Colorbits haha... I gotta put the Charcoals back in the filter.
