Ci sono 13 persone a chi consiglio di consultare un''otorinolaringoiatria. MDM può essere contestabile su alcuni registri, ma su questo, era il più grande in assoluto!
That center of his voice, so wide and resonant, almost like a baritone, with that smooth passagio, and then with those fantastic high notes, this combination has been unique. Many tried to imitate him, but he was force of nature, difficult to emulate.
Correli's high notes were out of this world, but his center didn't have the solid sound of Del Monaco.
What I would give to hear any of those monsters now days on the stage!!
@pepeelsordo You got that right! I watched Correli walk across the stage of the Old Met holding his high C and up the stairs to ring the gong on Turnadot! Awesome! And Tebaldi and Del Monaco Chenier left me like a wet rag in the seat! McCracken's Otello left me in tears, and I caught a Aida with Vickers and Nillson once. Yes, those were the days! AND THEY DIDN'T USE MICROPHONES! They can monster me any time they want!
I think it's probably recorded live but he's lip syncing. The Pianists hands are moving in time with the recording but his mouth isn't. MDM didn't open his mouth in that exaggerated way either when he sang live...
Why does everyone think that Del Monaco is Lip Syncing? He Has a very professional technique which might make him look that way; or maybe the lag between the music and the video. But I assure you 100% that he is singing!
he was in the1st opera i saw. i was 17 in the early 50th at the Shrine in LA,when the San Fran. opera company would come down for a few weeks. I still remember that great voice after all these yrs.
@citrussorbet thats amazing!!!!! im 17 & i want to go to an opera so badly but they are so expensive, and i dont want to waste my money on "small" singers. I rather use that money to pay for my singing lessons. i want to hear singers like Del Monaco, Callas, Tebaldi... someone who knows how to sing the classical bel canto way, and who isnt scared to sing "BIG"!!
Yes, I was blessed to have seen the great man "live" - with Warren in Otello & Pagliacci, in Samson et Dalila, concerts. Oh, to have been so fortunate as to live in the next apartment while he was rehearsing!!!!
What crap we now have as Chenier - Alvarez? Licitra? All very poor jokes & a disgrace to the role!!!
OMG he is great! This is something we have a very short supply of today a rea; voice. Corelli fans are welcome to his singing but I prefer the sound of Del Monaco and Tucker as Chenier.
Here is an example of my favorite Dramatic tenor, yes he sings with no bad habits and IMO as Chenier he is greater then the great Spinto of Corelli. He is wonderful here and I heard him at La Scala sing Otello in 1959. In our time he was the Otello! This is a real Dramatic tenor and until his car accident he was the greatest dramatic of his time. Bravo! sounds great even with only Piano.

I'm gonna have 2disagree w/U Oneguin65:( He IS lip-synching. I don't know Y(?) The strange thing is, the piano is definitely "live." I've got every "live" performance of Del Monaco's & I can tell if he's really singing or not. There's a big difference in facial expression when U R actually singing. Here's a giveaway: Each time he sings an "A" vowel his mouth position is too open like he's saying/singing "AH!" What's wrong w/this? Well, his technique(Melocchi)U really say "AW." Can't w/2openMOUTH
Even if you are correct, the fact still remains that what you are hearing is from a home rehearsal that he decided to record at his leisure. You will not find this version in ANY available live or studio recordings...it is definitely special. Heck, he could have recorded it in the morning and lip-synched to it in the afternoon.
When you sing in a small room like this with that small piano, naturally one does not need to break the legs,so the facial expression will not be the same as when you are really singing.
Del Monaco is amazing to listen to. If there was ever a singer to emulate for trying to access 100% of your voice, this is the one. Yeah, you don't want to be 100% all the time, but his approach is dead on for it when you do.
can you imagine what it must have been like on the ears being in a small room with la mario? how'd ya like to coach with his accompanist after this. he wouldn't be able to tell if you were screaming "si vendetta" from rigoletto or "at the fulton market now he yells fish" from my sister eileen. but what a way to go deaf :--)
Fascinating clip of Mad Mario again. I have to agree that I don't understand his facial expression either in relation to his text, neither can I say that I find his singing beautifull. Still he is a phenomenon.
Each time I hear this man I simply marvel , not only at his truly exceptional voice, but also at his facial and bodily actions. Wonderful all round and blessed with extremely handsome features.
