  • It certainly has elements of Tai Mantis. I like to see those techniques put to improve to make a new style. Thinking outside the forms is how evolution occurs. Thanks Sifu Harvey... this video will go to my library to help me as I develop my own forms...keep at it. :)

  • You don't feel is realtion whit the ground, and thus power, i don't know if that's what's supposed to happen in this form but I dislike, altough I can see how exausting it must be

  • Don't forget that the other purpose of forms is also to train the mind, some would argue that if you do not use the full range of emotion and psychology of a real fight when you practice a form you are shorting yourself because you're not developing those aspects.

  • this guy was shredding, the amount of moves packed into this one minute clip is insane. Anyone who does this kind of work will attest to just how exhausting it is.

    Its good for show, but test it on some pro boxer or even kickboxer, it would be failure for sure.

  • Then again, this is a set of movements that you have to do in order. The guy would be much better naturally - You can't judge a martial artist by the forms they do... usually.

  • @foldedcrane who would fight a pro boxer? I would,, and I think most kung fu practioners would fight a pro boxer if in jail or their lives are threatened.

  • you do know that someone doesnt actually need power behind any strikes (not that there is no power in the strikes) in order to hurt someone, right? if you wish further explanation, look at tai chi and qi gong, if u still dispute it i dont recommend trying to pick a fight with someone that can use energy.

  • @DaTaBASE017 the test would probably a feint and then attack a vital organ.. i don't know if sport fighters train iron crotch or are trained in responding to fast eye gouges and throws/breaks. Then again the test would be in response to his agression in self defense only.

  • The idea of forms is not so you can run around and beat people up but so you can practice your movements. You've said it yourself in an round-about way in saying you'd rather train on a punching bag, but there in lays the problem, forms where made so you could practice without a punching bag or really anything but yourself. Don't be silly and think someone is going to jump into a fight and go through there form and hope to win, that is clearly not the point of one.

  • Form teaches Strikes, evading & develops breath or wind....better than Bag work....

  • Its all about basic structure. Kinda like a foundation. No foundation no castle. ask any boxer if using hitting mitts is essential. They'll tell you yes. why? Because it teaches their BODY where to strike so they dont have to think as much. Same things with forms. Your body learns the moves.

  • Exactly. It builds your muscles exactly how they need to be it creates new neuron pathways in your brain. after enough correct form training the movements becone natural and sometimes even reflexive.

  • Our SiFu called out to the Lion Dance Drums to "Pump Him Up" because after a long day of demonstrations, Rich was performing the most cardiovascular straining sets of our system. When practiced slowly and diligently, The 12 Principle Praying Mantis Boxing set, or Evasive Fist, has a beautiful flow of breathe control. When moved at full speed, it is like running through a battle field! Any slip up of the balance or arm form is strictly exhaustion

  • You don't use forms in a combat. Forms are 'made up' combats. In a combat you have to adapt every single move to the current situation .....

  • Looks like an advanced form with lots of transitional stances rather than solid ones requiring more endurance. Looks good to me.

  • @chupachups12 why do you all see faults? I like the other side and your feedback but really,, its like you just watched bruce lee and said hey he wiped his brow of sweat that looked weak and his guard was open.

  • I love the footwork, and the offence seems like it could make a defender epileptic. But what's with the guard? Looks very open and weak. Is the thought to not even have to parry?

  • @Aparkour Look up ninjutsu, I believe and open guard is to bait? I could be wrong I am only an amateur. If all you tube viewers looked at new knowldge with an open mind first with no opinion. Then they viewed it to learn and still quiet there ego.. then maybe go out and train a form or with a master then I wish you would come on here and place an opinion and I do hope to see your opinions in 3 years if you are not dead from not training like your life is on the line,

  • One more comment, this on the technical side. Try to video from the sun side, that is, with the sun at your back, lighting your subject, so you don't get a silhouette which will take much of the sharp detail of techniques away.

  • I just started learning this style not too long ago, but I've never seen this form or anything close to it I can remember. What was it's purpose? To what end was the form created to do?

  • heh, I just finished reading the other comments. Never mind.

    A few other comments. From the 20 sec mark though the 30 sec mark, the intial lose of balance results in a flux in your power. Practice makes perfect, and concentrate more on the actual technique, make it perfect, and then power, and speed will come naturally.

    Try not to force it.

  • Cool form. A few critiques from a former tournament judge:

    1. Use hip movement and Chi expression through vocalizations to accentuate power in the strikes.

    2. Make sure to extend your kicks all the way, and lock your back leg out on your hill climbing stances. This also makes you look more solid and powerful while maintaining fluidity in your form.

    All in all I think you did really well on the form.

  • but some schools teach that a locked joint is a dead joint. and possibly dangerous for the practitioner if done with too much force.

  • Sisook, my apologies. Sifu Harvey yesterday told me to remove all Tai Mantis references in the Golden Harmony forms, which I just did.

  • I just checked it with my Sifu. It is not a traditional Tai mantis form, my bad. Sifu Harvey actually created this form as part of our Golden Harmony curriculum. It is based on Tai Mantis, nonetheless. Thanks for asking, now I know as well.

  • Good points. The Evasive Fist is indeed a long form and if you can do the entire form with stamina you will surely be exhausted so it does have a conditioning nature (I actually haven't learned this form yet myself). I should state that Rich who's doing the form is one of our more senior students and thus had to do a few forms more during the demo which caused him to be tired before even starting on this one.

    This guy should should slow down when doing a demo , more so to be posted to the public.

    re: 1.being fast and missing the target is a waste 2. Falling or losing balance during or after a strike wasted power 3. as someone else stated getting winded so early you lose foucus and power...you've lost the fight!

    I have never seen this form in the Tai Mantis system

  • I agree with ShaolinZen. If you want to do lightning fast attacks like Jet Li, fine, but that's combat. A form is a demonstration so take it easy. Concentrate on accuracy, then power, and then speed. I have an instructor who my master usually has demonstrate Black Tiger form. He does it pretty fast, but we can all hear the air ripping around his kicks and the stamp he makes at the last technique. Speed is essential for combat. Finesse is essential for forms. Both are essential for good Kung Fu.
