  • So when do I add the bacon fat? Thanks for the video!

  • thanks for metric :)

  • @GoGoGoOOV No problem. We Canadians are metric but most of our recipes come from the US.

  • l' m going to try out your recipe, looks good. Are you a former MS in the Navy?

  • This was a really good recipe. I'll be trying this out soon! Also, do you have Norwegian relatives since you did the skål? Eller kanskje du snakker norsk?

    Greetings from Norway!

  • @slashdotism I'd love to hear how it turns out. Some people have reported they cook the potatos before adding to save cooking time.

No Norwegian relatives but I was raised in a neighbourhood with many nationalities. so I use; Salud, Sante, Spasibo, Kumpai, Cin Cin and my Irish heritage Slainte. The best part wasn't the toasts, it was all that wonderful food from around the world!

  • When I cook I cook for adleast 8 hungry people should I just double the ingrediants

  • Was that a "skål!" I heard?

  • @Jornev Yes!

  • I really liked your chowder receipe, we recently moved to Prince Edward island in Canada, and we have the ability to go clam digging for fresh clams, up to 300 a day per person..it is called a feed.. where do you get the clam juice, and can I boil some clams to get it homemade.. also, if I want to make a seafood chowder, what kind of juice do I use? awesome video....thanks

    Brigitte

  • @brieict1 Wow, I haven't had access to fresh clams in years! Substitute water if you are adding fresh clams as they will cook flour into the stock. Other options include clam nectar which you can buy or clamato juice which gives it a red almost Manhattan Chowder taste. However, from my brief visits to Prince Edward Island, the locals make a great chowder. Ask them to advise you on making it with fresh clams and then do a video of it and post it!

  • Simple and to the point, It's faster if you use cooked or steamed potatoes. At least thats what I do. But, overall I liked your recipe best.

  • @Whoalilmama21 Many people cook the potatoes first and it does save time. I just hate to lose the nutrients to the boiling water. That being said, easy is always good! Thanks for the suggestion.

  • @AlphaJasonoid I would think it would be blander without onions but one of the best things about cooking is changing a recipe to your own liking. Try it without onions and regular milk. Maybe add some Old Bay Seasoning or some sage to make up for the loss of onion flavour.

If you try a variation, I'd love to hear how it turns out.

  • Thanks for the easy to follow recipe! Does anyone know the music playing in the background from about 6:00?

  • @chisheen Thanks for commenting. I think the music is Music Box Dancer

  • can you use milk or cream instead of water?

  • @gracistabu It might be a little rich but give it a try!

  • @treasurer6 I made it and it was extremely delicious! :)

  • @gracistabu Did you try using milk or cream?

  • @treasurer6 I ended up using whole milk. I drink raw milk so the cream separates to the top so there was definitely plenty of cream in it.....I think I'm going to have to make this again soon talking about it is making me want some!

  • @gracistabu The whole raw milk sounds wonderful. I will have to try that. Thanks for suggesting it.

  • TALKING ABOUT WASTING YOUR POTATOES.... YOU WASTED A 1/5 OF YOUR CELERY WHEN YOU WERE CHOPPING

  • Yum Yum did I say Yum...smile... this looks so good..

  • @seanviv2 Thanks so much!

  • Har! Thanks.

  • Actually I don't want to be in MY family, that's why I'm trying the 'create your own' route. I love to cook, too, and love your videos. Keep up the good work.

  • Wonderful recipe, many thanks! (oh, and if you're looking for family to adopt I'm available!)

  • @Nisismom Thanks for the kind words but trust me, you don't want to be in my family.

  • hey buddy! my girlfriend and I are heading over to the grocery store right now so we can make your recipe! I'll let you know how it goes! can't wait

  • @RedUncle mmmm absolutely delicious!!

  • @RedUncle Glad it turned out!

  • mmmmmmmmmmmm h i wanttt!!!!! why ur wife is so shy?????? she has a beauty hair!! :D

  • @PrEttYbAbYmx Si, mi esposa es muy hermosa. Gracias. Pero, ella es timida.

  • i like to put a little frozen sweet corn into my clam chowder while it's cooking.

  • Thanks a lot for this wonderful quick easy recipe!!! By the way I also added a can of mushroom soup to this recipe, and I cut back on the flour I added to the onions and celery. It turned out simply wonderful thick, and creamy, with a great taste!! Best new england clam chowder yet!!

  • @cowboyncows1 I love it when people make recipes their own by changing the recipe to their tastes. Thanks for posting your version!

  • Great recipe, Thank You! Enjoying the soup right now. Delicious!

  • @kborysenko Thanks so much for letting us know.

  • Great recipe, Thank You! Enjoying the soup right now. Delicious!

  • can i add heavy cream/ all purpose cream and cream of mushroom..........??

  • @rjcristina1117 The best part of cooking is you can add whatever you like. Cream of any kind adds richness. As for cream of mushroom soup, it is thickened with flour as well and might be a little much but give it a try, it might be great.

If you do try any combination of above, I'd love to hear how it turns out.

  • omg awsome clam chowder and super easy to make !!!!!!!

  • @DirtyFrenchFrie12 Thanks for your kind words!

  • Thank you! I cannot wait to make this! I have one quick question...when you drained the bacon, you saved the grease but I did not see where you had added it. Is the grease added to the recipe? I hope so because it seems like it will be delicious!

I truly appreciate your sharing this.

  • @bhlynd In the old days, I would have added it with the flour but in an attempt to practice girth control, I leave it out now. The bacon has lots of flavour without the fat.

  • Great recipe. Though I think I'd like to add some mushrooms to it...either diced or halved

  • @TheSixthStation Great. I love it when people make recipes their own! Could you let me know how it turns out?

  • i made it for my family im 14 and my mom said i cant make a good diner so i made this and proved her wrong

  • @martinboy121995 Thanks so much for letting me know and keep on cooking!

  • That looks great and of course lots of Pepper!!! :) 2 thumbs up !!!

  • @tonytang2222 Thanks!

  • Wow, your not from New England are yah!!!!

  • @stangization Not unless they moved it to Canada. Although, I have always wanted to go to New England.

  • Very good video, and the soup looks delicious! You've inspired me to try to make a pot.

  • @Sublue A lot of credit has to go to Bill, he is the tech/camera expert.

If you do try it, we'd love to hear how it turns out.

  • well done

  • @SavagesInMyTown Thanks!

  • looks great .nice job on the video as well im gonna give it a go Thanks for sharing.

  • @GLOCKIOMM Thanks for commenting! Let me know how it turns out.

  • this looks delicious! i'm eating clam chowder right now although it's from a can and it doesn't really taste that good :( but this looks like it will be delicious!!! thanks for the video very well done!

  • @1kingconan Thanks for the kind comments!

  • hi umm about the bacon is it okay if use an other type of meat ex. chicken?

  • @inuyasha30 Yes but I would recommend smoked chicken or turkey to try and get some of the smokey flavour of bacon that is so critical to the taste of clam chowder. Another option would be to add textured vegetable protien bacon bits to taste to get some of the bacon flavour.

  • I can't have wine! I'm 11!

  • @jsz1998 You're right but try cooking anyway. Try drinking ginger ale while you're cooking. It's actually better!

  • im comin for dinner

  • @welderhondadrew I'll open the wine!

  • @SweetAvivianos Thanks for letting us know how it turned out!

  • Hi, what are the ingridients you mentioned after the evaporate milk when the video started? Sory I payed attention but I can't understand. Please. Thanks in advance!

  • @marialilis Italian seasoning blend, thyme, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.

    Enjoy!

  • Thank you for sharing this recipe! Me and my boyfriend really appreciate..between the both of us we almost devoured that soup! First time tried it, tasted great, for college students we didn't wan't to stick with the same top ramen, canned crap food. Already know how expensive clam chowder is even in small quantities in fast food or resuaturants. You made it fast, easy, affordable, and ultimately fun to learn!

  • @pinaypk Wow, I am blushing! You will learn that cooking can be easy and is almost always better than prepackaged canned food. If you are on a budget and are college students you should really get into stir frying. A wok is inexpensive. You can buy a few ounces of your favourite meat or fish, a few fresh vegetables (you can even buy mixed fresh vegetables in a bag) and a some stir fry sauce makes a great meal in under 5 minutes for very little money!

  • @treasurer6 :) we have been experimenting with alot of dishses like indianthai. and jorean cuisine, but one day i told him i felt like some good clam chowder! my dad is retired air force kind of jealous he didnt cook in the service so he could teach me a few pointers he doesnt cook at all, hes contentt with his tv dinners hahaa

  • Looks good! Just curious, about how many servings does this make?

  • @katsomsanith when my boyfriend and I made it we had about a good 6-8 bowls (fairly a good amount in bowl) I don't know if that helps :/

  • @katsomsanith I'd say about 4 large dinner servings or 6 smaller appetizer servings.

  • retired military cook myself but still cooking and everywhere i make this recipe it's a hit.

  • @aka5296 You should do some videos!

  • @aka5296 Have you thought about doing a video of some your favourite recipes? Trust me its fun!

  • I'm a student of Niagara College in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and I'm taking the culinary management - apprentice program. Clam Chowder is on my final next week and this is a great help, thanks!

  • @adamsonite Wow! I hope you take some of the skills you are learning and do some videos of your own. I'm sure they'd be a hit and they are fun to make.

  • My husband LOVED it!

  • @MyWorldPodcast Thanks! It is one of my favourite dishes.

  • this video kick ass

  • @latinoboy97383 I am blushing!

  • so glad you cut the onion right

  • are clam chowders like really tasty?

  • @tenten1353 One of my favourites!

  • @tenten1353 hell yea

  • This is great! Can I get a list of all the things you need please? Especially the sauce and spices PLEASE!

  • I think I might of left out the 1/2 cup flour.

  • Lets try this again 2 celery stalks 2 cups diced potatoes 1/2 cup diced onion 4 slices bacon 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup flour 2 cans baby or minced clams water 12 oz evaporated milk 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/2 teaspoon italian seasoning pepper to taste
  • i love the way you start out making your chowder....very important step!

  • Thanks!

  • love new england's chowder.i got tired of eating from the can i always wanted to make it from scratch thanks for the tip:)on sharing you video:)kool!!!

  • If you make it, I'd love to hear how it turns out.

  • okay:) hope i don't mess-up.thanks again for your reply:)have a nice day:)

  • @treasurer6 love it! Thank you for sharing your experience/knowledge

  • i love the simplicity of your presentation.

    good job!

and the studio audience are awesome!

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks

  • i completely ruined this recipe everything was fine all the way up until adding the Worcestershire sauce..the regulator on the cap was a bit large and i ended up with a few large glugs...next time i suppose ;)

  • mmm looks delicious

  • Awesome recipe! I luv the rockies.... I used to live in calgary. miss it.

u should put a wet towel under your cutting board so it doesn't slip.

  • I just tried it today and it's great! Simple and easy to follow. Thanks!

  • Great! Thanks for letting us know how it turned out!

  • Marks Work Warehouse indeed :) Nice recipe, cant wait to try it. I am gonna add about a tablespoon or so of Thai fish sauce..I think that may add some more character to the dish. I`ll let you know how it turns out..

  • Dave it's obvious you love food to, tasty tucker you make.

  • True, food is my biggest weakness.

  • Nice Recipe! Looks simple enough.

  • A couple of my friends say it is easier if you cook the potatoes before adding them, it takes a lot less simmering.

  • Don't forget the cornbread and the cranberry juice. Then you have yourself a real New England-style meal. = )

  • Sounds great!

  • Might I add, you chose the right beverage as well. Every meal has only one "right" beverage to go with it. Red wine goes with pasta or lasagna. White wine is for fish and grilled vegetables. Vodka shots go with borsch and most soups.

And for clam chowder, nothing beats a cold beer. :)

  • I'm Canadian, everything goes with beer!

  • You would indeed... she's "gettin' on" a bit these days but I still look forward to a batch every Fall or Winter when it's a bit colder. It makes a nice hearty meal.. again, thanks for the vid...

    Mark in Seattle..

  • MMM, sounds like I'd like your mother's cooking!

  • nice job... just like Ma used to male... especially with the bacon and celery...

  • MMM, sounds like I'd like your mother's cooking!

  • yummy..... hey you think i cant use this method with a bunch of clams i caught recently. me and my friends caught 25 and their all HUGE!!!!!! i was just seeing if i can use your method because im not using can clams with all that good juice. i only have the juice of whatevers inside the clams. their still alive right now haha.

  • Nice video..Just a couple of things, I wish you showed a close up of the finished soup. It looked great. Also you should make a video of a seafood chowder, that would be neat. This time show the finished product at the end :)

  • really good video!

btw, why all the metric conversions!?!?

  • lol, thats a lot work

  • Wow! I'd love to see Korea! I'd also like to hear how the Clam chowder turns out.

    Enjoy the wine!

  • Great video. I just moved to Korea, and come winter time I'm definitely making a pot of soup with your method. I will be sure to take your recommendation and begin with internal consumption of wine.

  • Wow! I'd love to see Korea! I'd also like to hear how the Clam chowder turns out.

    Enjoy the wine!

  • Bacon and butter are the ingredients that really separate good clam chowder from GREAT clam chowder. Excellent video and excellent recipe my friend. Your soup is definitely the real deal.

    Peace and prosperity. :)

  • Oh yeah and also copious quantities of wine taken internally is also a key ingredient!!! XD

  • If you can list the ingredients (and amount) and serving size in the description that'd be SUPERB. Thank you.

  • I'm starvin right now for some clam chowda!

  • Make some

  • either way it is a good recipe, ur awesome dood

  • nevermind as soon i pressed enter on the comment u told us to add the clams...my bad

  • Har! I've done worse.

  • Also when do u add the clams

  • is it ok if i dont use celery and onions...i dfont like them

  • I think it would be rather bland without them but the great part of cooking is experimentation!

  • This is the best tutorial and chowder I have ever seen. Thanks, the family ate it up!

  • I'm blushing!

  • can you use normal milk instead of the evaporated stuff?

  • Sure but it will be thinner.

  • do you eat this for breakfast ?

  • no, but go ahead if you'd like!

  • It made me LOL when your wife wouldnt look at the camera.. funny

  • She thinks we're nuts but sort of humours us!

  • Bravo!

  • Thanks,I should point out several people have said they prefer to add the potatoes cooked so it takes less time to cook.

  • nice mustache

  • My wife says I look like a dork without it.

  • i've never had a clam.. are they very fishy? i dont think i would like it if its real fishy..

  • Yes, clams have a definitive seafood taste. I wouldn't recommend this dish if you don't like seafood.

  • and now, through the magic that is TIVO, I am watching you guys on the big screen. Smile!

  • We're always smiling! It's good to hear from you again.

  • TIVO? I thought they had a cure for that now.

  • haha!

  • Awesome!! Your wife is so cute being shy of the camera...she reminds me of my aunt!..Can hardly wait for more videos! Yummmmy!! :-D

  • Thanks, I think she is kind of cute too! More recipes have been filmed and just have to be edited so stay tuned.

  • Ahhh, thanks Dave! I can't wait to make this. It looks amazing. Your videos get better and better all the time. I miss James Barber, and I would have to say that your cooking series has inspired me the way his did. That says alot. Thanks bud!

  • Thanks, I think she is kind of cute too! More recipes have been filmed and just have to be edited so stay tuned.

  • Sorry about the first response, I hit the wrong reply button. I think James Barber is spinning in his grave but thanks for the compliment!

  • No canned clams? And I thought England was civilized! The next best wouldn't be tuna, it would be fresh scallops. Put 1 1/2 cup small scallops in at the same time I put the scallops in and simmer them for 10 minutes instead of 5. If that isn't possible, do the same with cubed fresh salmon. If that isn't available use canned salmon. Canned tuna just doesn't have enough flavour for this seasoned a chowder.

  • OMG AWESOME!

  • Thanks!

  • Yay for another video!

  • And more coming soon. We shot a number of videos recently, and they simply await editing and posting. My favourite pending recipe is Asian Chili Chicken Wings, they are amazingly good. Stay tuned!

  • Har, Bill just likes the Asian Chili Chicken Wings because they are a little spicy. Although, I do admit they are very tasty.

  • Sounds lovely - I can't get tinned clams here - do you think tuna would be a substitute?

I'm also hoping you'll be uploading Christmas recipes soon ? XD
