I remember a quote from Matt, the drummer from the arctic monkeys from a while ago when he said "I thought I was alright on the drums... Then I saw qotsa and realized I had to hit the drum 100 times harder. Pretty funny
this interviewer is a fucking dumb ass, i dont remember anyone asking faggy grohl if there was rivalry between him and ( god ) gene trautmann, or fredo. people just pay too much attention to the fact grohl was in nirvana. i mean wow that doesnt make him a god, hes just a good drummer. anyway, joey is a far better drummer.
Is this really a bad interview? Why do you people keep saying this? This is all anybody ever talks about with Queens, Grohl vs Castillo, kudos to this guy for actually asking it.
lol dave filled in to record an album and to tour lightly while josh went out and found a replacement being joey, who is of phenomenal talent. dave went back to foo fighters, and now josh is back playing with dave in them crooked vultures...what rivalry?
Fun Fact: When Danzig's original drummer Chuck Biscuits left the band, Danzig wanted Dave Grohl. That didn't happen but Danzig found Joey Castillo. Years later, Joey went on to play for QOTSA after Grohl left.
I should imagine there's no rivalry between them at all, it's just the fans like to make a ruck. Both seem like down to Earth, nice blokes, so why should there be anything? Grohl has his own thing, Castillo his.
Personally I much prefer Joey on the drums, and struggle to understand this "Dave Grohl legend" sychophancy which flies around. Good drummer, but not even close to being the best of his generation.
"You can't be in the Queens and try to be somebody else." That shit is true, everybody who's been in QOTSA has brought their own piece to it. Grohl is a legend and possibly my favorite drummer, but he had too much shit on his own plate to be in two bands. So they brought in someone different yet equally badass. Joey's the shit.
I agree with your main point, but I'd be careful saying Joey is as badass as Dave. Dave Grohl is one of the best drummers that has ever lived, period. Joey Castillo is good. But lets not kid ourselves, he's not nearly the drummer Dave is.
But to be clear: I am not saying that Joey sucks. I am not saying they should bring back Dave.
Alfredo was all rides but I think thats how they wanted it at the beginning so ya didnt have to think too much. But Joey is a beast on the drums, those muscles...my god...technically he's great and he can play so fast its kinda odd. Its been a while since I've seen a drummer add so much energy to a band.
You know.. Both drummers are bad ass. I mean, Dave's a legend... But Joey is a beast! Watch live performances on both drummers and you can tell that they both are very different and very talented.
I guess what I have to say is is that there isn't a rivalry.. Just a lot of people who wanna distinguish which drummer is better.. And really, in truth.. Both drummers are awesome.
I think they each fit a different style of Queens songs. Dave seems to fit in better for songs like Avon, or No One Knows, while Joey is the kind of guy I'd want behind the set for songs like Better Living or Song For the Dead. But it honestly doesn't matter, they both work perfectly with the band.
@offdutyjie Also, they both idolise john bonham (the heavy hitting led zeppelin drummer). You can certainly here a little bit of his influence on them both, they hit hard, fast and fucking excellently.
@offdutyjie dave grohl seems way more crisp in the way he plays. joey seems way more raw and the way he plays is like straight agro energy. I like joeys style better but everyone to their own.
i've never heard joey talk so much. what a great interview. the interviewer manages to ask potentially awkward questions but still keep the mood comfortable.
Yea. Even if the Dave Grohl question is B.S even to him, I believe you gotta have the balls to ask him what people are saying in the "community" or other wise. Thats part of the job. You cant be afraid to TALK.

Grohl is a better drummer but QOTSA is gotten better with out him so it's close.

there is no rivalry. dave grohl is on another planet. that planet's name is "better".
Sudhish86 6 months ago
@Sudhish86 I would rename that planet "technically better"
Chazgd 6 months ago
@Chazgd, no. overall. Joey can be more funky, but his prowess is limited to basic tempos. after a certain point he loses control and goes way off...
