doesn't compare to the original, every american character is a hundredth of the British. They did it with IT CROWD as well, and i give the same review to them both: The English was better mainly because it was the original, but also because i feel the actors were better chosen in the English version.
I think the American version is better, but certainly not this peice of shit! Every fucking character other than Tyler is wrong, even the fucking premise. I watched the bbc version when I came out. Then this when it came out. Prefer the American version
This shouldn't even be called the US version of Life on Mars. This is an abomination. Life on Mars (The real Life on Mars made by the UK) was much better. Come up with your own ideas god damn American media.

@codename617 Definitely something unusual this preview. The lead is the same, but the supporting characters are all different. It is like they scrapped then re-filmed the first episode.
Just as the original UK version was a tribute to The Sweeney and Softly, Softly, I can see that this American version contains a lot of head nods to Kojak, Starsky and Hutch and the many other police series that were the staple of US TV in the 1970s.
So they took some good stuff from LoM and americanized it... to make it cool?... The uncool goofyness of the british was what made it so beautiful ... this is too hard and forced ;_;
The original is better and part of the fun was sussing the colloquial. It took me a while but I did find out what "hoops" were. It seems a lot of people ate out of cans in 1973 England. Not really but it adds to the perceived depravation of a time 35 years ago.
I'm glad I never watched this trailer before seeing the show, or might have missed out on a fantastic series. I started watching it (on netflix) because of Jason O'Mara. I'm so glad I did. Never seen the UK version, would like to though. And, America does make excellent tv. Dexter, Nip/Tuck, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, ect...I could go on and on. Peace, people. Peace.
@Xuchiejlala Actually makes more sense than most remakes. 70's in US were much different than 70's in the UK so it's harder for the audience to connect.
Damn, can't we all get along? Everyone acts like it's a giant game and your side is better than my side or whatever. That sounds so childish. I love Europeans, I mean, a lot of our ancestors in the US came from Europe. Europe has some of the most beautiful places on Earth with some of the richest histories of civilization. Let's try and get along from now on.
I really didn't like the UK version but then again British tv irritates me. I'm glad they replaced Colm Meaney (sp?) with Harvey Keitel and whoever that chick was with Gretchen Moll for Gene and Annie. I agree, had I seen this I wouldn't have watched the finished product.
Are Americans allergic to British TV or something? Why do they need to make shit remakes of everything? Besides the Mancs accents make it better anyway it just sounds cheesy with an American accent.
@WinnietheGlue Actually, as a German I found it quite difficult to gasp the dialogue in Life on Mars precisely because of the Manchester accent. Especially Annie was almost impossible to understand. Ashes to ashes was way better in that respect. Still, the American remake does sound somewhat silly indeed.
OH. DEAR. LORD. Why can't American's get their own ideas? Stop stealing out TV shows and using American actors instead! Every one of these 'American Versions' are just tragic.
@notaclerk1 Unlike Self-righteous asshole Americans of course. We dont have to convince people we are the greatest people in the world, we already know it and dont need to advertise the fact.

WTF this is not the real american version that i am watching over here in Sweden on saturdays at 6 pm :0 is this an early trailer for an american version that dident work, so the one iam watching is the new american version that worked better?:s
I was bored as hell last night, browsing Netflix, saw Life on Mars US version, watched 6 straight episodes and it was freaking great, this Brit shit can go GFYM.
D: US's Sam Tyler isn't a hottie at all! John Simm is... :yummy:. And that Gene Hunt isn't appealing at all. Why can't the Americans just keep the original version?? If they can't understand British (hihi) they could use subtitles.
wait this isnt even the same series. Watch the american one this is a pile of shit. Costumes and even actors are different. Harvey fucking kaitel is in the real one what is this?
This series is actually very good, Im sure no where near as good as the source material but yes it does use all legit soundtracks they dont skrimp on anything the budget is pretty decent the acting is good and so is the writing. You people should watch it first instead of judging by this alone.
i think i have worked it out why the americans who have come out with some excellent TV shows e.g.two and a half men house and Family Guy have done this they do it constantly like the ring was originally japanese let the right one in was swedish then with red dawarf and hundreds of other things it is because the majority of the american public are so deformed with interbreeding [fucking there relatives] that they cannot physically or mentally understand anything from outside the USA
wow i managed to watch this series even though im british and jesus fucking christ you changed two things one the year second the ending it was like watching the original except with shit acting and the english Gene Hunt is much more badass and funny even come of the cases and jokes were the same like the diet coke line and many others were all copie and pasted from the first better original version i think it is good that they aborted this monstrosity before it got a second series
I grew up in L.A. in the 1970s I wish they would have made this version. The NYC one stinks on ice. Hard to beat the BBC original but L.A. '72 could have been cool like the Rockford Files.
Makes me proud to be Irish (we get the BBC classic as opposed to this rubbish but hey there's always BBC America, I watched Dictor Who on it when I was in the States) ASHES TO ASHES is British and if America had concluded Mars more apporpriatly (i.e copy the British ending instead of everything but the ending) then maybe, just maybe they could of profitted more so
@ironjoker101 yep totally agree with you there... I'm saying no more in the matter except why try and fix something for the American audience that didn't need fixing in the first place... All I'm saying... Plus Philip Glenister is FAR better looking than ANY of them... Sorry but he is!
The Americans should have got Tarentino to produce& direct Life on Mars or the original director of the UK series. The show should have felt like a humorous version of The French Connection&Gene Hunt should have been a cross between Popeye Doyle,Dirty Harry&Robert Di Nero cop characters,to get the nearest to Philips portrayal of Hunt.To all the Brits who say that Life on Mars can't be American:It can be,but it wasn't made as well as it could have been. Also there's not as much friction between th
I HATE THIS!!! i absolutely, irrevocably, want to KILL this show!
The British version is the ONLY version, and ONLY Philip Glenister can play Gene Hunt. I hate the American's for this, it takes away EVERYTHING good they've EVER done. It's just money making off a fantastic, witty, hilarious, sexy BRITISH drama/ cop show. The Americans have THEIR shows, and the Brits own their shows. Should stay that way!!!
ruined one of the best british series of recent years. Are the US so stuck for ideas that they're now just stealing all our tv? I dont understand why we have to put up with so much bollocks from America, yet anytime the UK makes anything remotely good, the US feel the need to remake it, instead of just broadcasting it in its original form..... MAKES ME SO ANGRY.
this is nothing like the show, it has different actors and everything. Ao all you brits out there saying this is a bad tv show off of this video have it all wrong because this show is awesome and nothing like this video.
@mcivor24 I have SEEN this show, (American and British version) and i LOVE the British one. I'm not even English for God's sake and i can tell that it's a million times better. They used the EXACT same storyline with terrible casting and COMPLETELY missed the point of all Genes one-liners.
More to the point... Have YOU seen the British version, because they aren't completely different shows, they are exactly the same, except for one major difference. Quality.
I'm sorry, I really do try to give US remakes of British shows a chance, despite the fact that I hate that they remake them at all, but really?!? I mean, actually really????
Having watched not only the pilot, but the full on car crash which was LoM USA, as a stand alone series, it was OK I suppose, nothing fantastic, but watchable. However to compare it to UK LoM is the same as comparing a lovely chocolate cake, covered in sprinkles and candles on the top to a piece of shit, with some more shit piled on the top.
The series started very well. You could see all the echoes of the UK series and the acting was excellent. It was also nice, being a Brit, to see 1973 US reflected in the series. However, as the series went on it moved further away from the premise - it always did rely more heavily on the supernatural than the original but this was ok... in the beginning. The last few episodes were so wacky they made little sense, but then they knew they were not being renewed and had to tie it all together.
so shit that guy cant act and what is wrong with the English original why cant Americans cant watch that I mean I no its a bit complicated for a lot of them but you no some must get it
what a load of shit americans are shit at comendy they always copy every think and fail what a bag of shit whoever made this has a room in hell waiting for them
Somebody sue these bastards for a crime against television.
I mean, really, WTF is this? Do we really need to take everything cool and original out of a show to make it "American"? Is there no originality left in the country? And you are NOT about to try and convince me that THAT is supposed to be the Gene Genie.
On behalf of America (at least the part that knows not to mess with quality) I'm so sorry.
Its not so strange the US remakes Brit shows. A lot of Americans wont understand the originals. I myself dont watch a lot of US shows for the same reason. Being a Brit, I much prefer to watch TV made by my own country with accents and culture I understand.
its not that america always ruins shows, its just completely different audience, The english are different, even their comedy is different. Besides remakes always suck, because get used to the version they saw first anything else just wouldnt fit.
that...looks...SHIT. Complete ruin of the British series. Does it even use the song Life on Mars by David Bowie, essentially the theme? Judging by this cluster fuck of awfulness, I can only imagine that the American adaptation of Skins will be dreadful. (Unfortunately i will probably still watch it).
@1000hoursmore woah is it just me, or is this not even the right thing, i just watch the whole season on dvd like 2 days ago, in one day, and this isnt right, the characters are different, gene hunt isnt the same. this is not the right one.
@1000hoursmore this was just the pilot..but the show did have great moments...like the bbc series..actually the soundtrack kicked even more ass in the us version.....and yes they had the david bowie version
@1000hoursmore Well I've watched the US version first, now I'm at the second season of the UK one. The UK version is of course way superior, but the US version is not bad in itself (if you don't compare it to the other one). It DOES have the Life on Mars song by David Bowie, and, well, all in all it's just easyer to understand, for me at least. BTW if I remember correctly this is not footage from the real LoM US version, many of the actors were replaced.
I just bought the UK version and I LOVE IT! I never saw the American version but my friend liked it until they cancelled it. She was excited to learn that I have the UK version AND I just bought Ashes to Ashes... John Simm and Philip Glenister rock their roles! Awesome actors.
@XxgamethingxX I've only watched 2 episodes of A2A so far. I was already sad to hear what happened to Sam 7 years after he went back. I refuse to watch any Youtube spoiler videos until I'm done with A2A. I will let you know what I think when I'm done. I loved Life on Mars though! It was awesome! I had to change my computer's dvd drive because A2A only came in Region 2. Works beautifully though...:)
@Mogoamerica Yeah, It was sad Sam died. I also like the way the first shot of Gene Hunt because it portrays him as a kind of heroic person, but in Life on Mars he is just a fat old Crook
@XxgamethingxX Gene is hilarious though in his role even though he is crooked... his lines and insults are epic...lol and I love the "WTF" looks that Sam gives him.
As an American myself, I have to say that this is a rubbish remake. Yanks should be able to enjoy an English drama, ya know? I'm ashamed of my countrymen and women sometimes.
The original was brill and that's the end of the story, ye great soft sissy girly nancy French bender Man United supporting puffs!
I graduated from the police academy in 1973. Experienced it first hand and identified with Sam as he wrestled with his future knowledge in '73, where working conditions and pay sucked, you did it because you loved the job. I enjoyed the show for taking me back and reliving the stone age. If it wasn't for the US version, I'd never know that it was first done in the UK and that their show, of course was better. I did love the UK ending as Sam got the one he wanted.
so did noody notice that this is nothing like the american version, this trailer doesnt seem anything like th actual show

wait this isnt even the same series. Watch the american one this is a pile of shit. Costumes and even actors are different. Harvey fucking kaitel is in the real one what is this?
TheRockitLawnChair 9 months ago
This series is actually very good, Im sure no where near as good as the source material but yes it does use all legit soundtracks they dont skrimp on anything the budget is pretty decent the acting is good and so is the writing. You people should watch it first instead of judging by this alone.
TheRockitLawnChair 9 months ago
i think i have worked it out why the americans who have come out with some excellent TV shows e.g.two and a half men house and Family Guy have done this they do it constantly like the ring was originally japanese let the right one in was swedish then with red dawarf and hundreds of other things it is because the majority of the american public are so deformed with interbreeding [fucking there relatives] that they cannot physically or mentally understand anything from outside the USA
ukEpikGamerz 9 months ago 4
wow i managed to watch this series even though im british and jesus fucking christ you changed two things one the year second the ending it was like watching the original except with shit acting and the english Gene Hunt is much more badass and funny even come of the cases and jokes were the same like the diet coke line and many others were all copie and pasted from the first better original version i think it is good that they aborted this monstrosity before it got a second series

I grew up in L.A. in the 1970s I wish they would have made this version. The NYC one stinks on ice. Hard to beat the BBC original but L.A. '72 could have been cool like the Rockford Files.

This show may have been saved if they had kept Colm Meaney and Rachelle Lefevre in it. But, as it is, we'll never know now.
And this Jason O'Mara has absolutely NONE of John Simm's charisma and sex-appeal. Nuff said.

Quality.
SmileysAllRound 10 months ago
I'm sorry, I really do try to give US remakes of British shows a chance, despite the fact that I hate that they remake them at all, but really?!? I mean, actually really????

Having watched not only the pilot, but the full on car crash which was LoM USA, as a stand alone series, it was OK I suppose, nothing fantastic, but watchable. However to compare it to UK LoM is the same as comparing a lovely chocolate cake, covered in sprinkles and candles on the top to a piece of shit, with some more shit piled on the top.
EEWW2006 1 year ago 19
The series started very well. You could see all the echoes of the UK series and the acting was excellent. It was also nice, being a Brit, to see 1973 US reflected in the series. However, as the series went on it moved further away from the premise - it always did rely more heavily on the supernatural than the original but this was ok... in the beginning. The last few episodes were so wacky they made little sense, but then they knew they were not being renewed and had to tie it all together.

Being a Brit, I much prefer to watch TV made by my own country with accents and culture I understand.

that...looks...SHIT. Complete ruin of the British series. Does it even use the song Life on Mars by David Bowie, essentially the theme? Judging by this cluster fuck of awfulness, I can only imagine that the American adaptation of Skins will be dreadful. (Unfortunately i will probably still watch it).

@1000hoursmore Im surprised the FCC will even allow Skins, as its about the evil plant of the devil ;)

@1000hoursmore woah is it just me, or is this not even the right thing, i just watch the whole season on dvd like 2 days ago, in one day, and this isnt right, the characters are different, gene hunt isnt the same. this is not the right one.
miatch82 1 year ago
@1000hoursmore this was just the pilot..but the show did have great moments...like the bbc series..actually the soundtrack kicked even more ass in the us version.....and yes they had the david bowie version

@1000hoursmore So you have watched the US Life on Mars? If not, why the uneducated vitriol?

@1000hoursmore The Skins adaptation is actually Canadian. Nice job on your research there.
nexthoudini 7 months ago

Mogoamerica 1 year ago
@Mogoamerica Yeah, It was sad Sam died. I also like the way the first shot of Gene Hunt because it portrays him as a kind of heroic person, but in Life on Mars he is just a fat old Crook
XxgamethingxX 1 year ago
@XxgamethingxX Gene is hilarious though in his role even though he is crooked... his lines and insults are epic...lol and I love the "WTF" looks that Sam gives him.

As an American myself, I have to say that this is a rubbish remake. Yanks should be able to enjoy an English drama, ya know? I'm ashamed of my countrymen and women sometimes.
