I enjoyed finding this this. You've captured the dream like quality of the book. Its a favourite of mine (as you can tell) that I return to now and again.
The country Its not the most unpleasant dystopian world ever envisaged. But the steady decline of the will and optimism of the eponymous/anonymous country is frightening. Bit by bit the energy of the country saps away and it becomes ever more insular. As in a dream once lost no thing and no one can be found again.

I haven't read this particular book but many of his "New York" stories. And yes, they are also strange, he's really good with creating suspense about things that aren't actually exciting...
