I just had one question! I have a very old glider which was covered using a sort of silky fabric, and i can't find how to apply it to the wing for repairs. Great video by the way!
The covering is called monokote or ultra kote which is lighter. The iron is what his using to stick and shrink it tight. you can use a sock to cover the iron so it will not burn the covering or stick to it. practice on scrap then you will get a feel for how much heat to use.
WOW, that is skill. I have used Ultrcote covering as well as monokote. I like the ultracote because it is really easy to work with. I found that the monokote was hard to get to shrink using heat. the ultracote was really easy to get rid of rinkles. My question is....first, what is the name of this covering material. Second, does this stuff shrink rather easily like ultracote, or is more on the side of monokote?
@modeltrain9500 hey, u sound like u know tonnes about building stuff. can u help me plz? i am about 2 buy a rc cessna 182 skylane and it is a balsa plane. the stuff this guy used in the vid what is it calles and what is the other tool he is holding? is it easy to build a wing for a plane?
would be an informative video if you slowed it to normal speed and got rid of the gay ass music and explained what the guy was doing......so sick of music videos on youtube.
@ultralajt but we would like to hear you tell us all about the features and properties of this Oracover, and explain how you are connecting it to the frame
@Ignantredneck : You have a choice. Don't watch the video. I'm sick of people like you that complain. If you don't know how to cover a wing after this video, find another hobby.
I have a question that needs to be answerd IMEDIATELEY!! (it's kind of urgent...) I have seen a few videos on how to cover a wing now, and I have always seen ppl use this special iron. But i don't have one and I am dying to know if I can just use a normal iron instead?!
THANKYOU!! Now all my questions have been answerd and I finally have the go-ahead to begin building my rc plane! I've been planing this for a month now, with this being the last unanswerd question I had.
I've even drawn my own plans and everything but I had no idea exactly what materials I would use, because of this...
Btw. that brings me to another question. If I were to build everything out of balsa, including the fuselage, would I have to cover the fuselage the same way as I cover the wing?
can anyone tell me please how to put on the film on a plane wing, as i have a cut it the orignal cover and have 2 rolls of film but dont know what to do, Do you have to iron it on??
how do you hide the seems when using to pieces of covering of the same color? example: going from the top of the wing to the bottom around the leading edge?
Always cover the bottom of the wing first. Bring the covering to the front of the leading edge, then cover the top and tuck the front of the covering about 1-2 inches under the leading edge so the wind won't blow your covering open. This is how I do it on 35%-40% airplanes
normally we only get pictures in forums but thanks youtube we´re able to do videos about almost everything and upload them to share with those who are interested.
covering straight forward wings is actually the easy part. when you have compound surfaces that you absolutely don't want creases showing, like a p-51 forward the canopy, practice practice, practice. and a lot of head scratching patients to master it.
Daktana69, that is actuially the purpose of my video :)... to save money and avoid frustrations.
Yes, it could be done allso in one color and one double size piece of covering foil. But, when work with one piece, you should be more careful, not to get many wrinkles on second side.
It is heating iron specially designed for modellers. It is easier to use that ordinarry household iron, because of its size, shape, handle designa nd better regulation of temperature.
...You can use heat gun for covering large sandwich wings (Balsa/styrofoam/balsa) in such way, that you heat the covering and pres it down to balsa using soft fabric patch or fabric gloves.
But I recommend iron more than heat gun, as with iron, you have more controll aver the temperature (energy transfered to the covering.
But the most important of all is : "Practice, practice...."
The tool is "Heat sealing tool" and it is like a small electric iron adopted for heat shrinking the monocote, oracover and similar brands of heat shrinking coverings for rc models.

It is Oralight from Germany. It stik and shrink well and it is very light because of very thin coat of color...hence transparent look.

Normal speed is way over 10 minutes, and youtube accept only 10 min long videos.
If you feel that music is annoying (Mission impossible), you can always turn audio off.

Thankyou very much for this, you have just saved me some money.
If you was going to just do yellow, would you still double up on the covering, like the red, or you just did that for a 2 tone color ?

I won't need a heat gun, or are heat guns for larger surfaces???
jcabb1 4 years ago
You can remove some wrinkles using heat gun, but you can overstreech the film fast and tension will twist or deform the balsa construction.

Great video - easy to follow and there's new things I learn each time I watch it.
I noticed this time, when you trim the excess red film, you hold the angle of the razor away from the yellow and then seal it down. Very useful!
I hope my covering job turns out as good as that... Well done!
