Wrestlemania 2 build up was great for me because I wanted to T and Roddy because I liked roddy much more then I ever did Hogan and those great interviews. "Hes the only guy I know who wears more chains then his ancestors man". Just great stuff. The match sucked but the build was wonderful.
I think they should have a great build-up between C.M. i didn't like the 2/21/11 undertaker build up. why not have the lights go out and him tombstone miz or cena. maybe even the rock. at least its different and know one would have suffered the crushing disapointment of no sting debut. triple h vs taker will not live up to the michaels match.OOOHHH i just thought about the stoyline for that. HHH fights to avenge shawn's loss. naaa hes to selfish to keep shawn in the spotlight
After ELIMINATION CHAMBER,when LAWLER & MORRISON face-off 4 the WWE TITLE...That will prolly be THE BEST BUILD-UP EVER...It'll be a bunch of they protect 1 another from frequent attacks from MIZ,RILEY &even COLE (among others/other things) to make sure that NEITHER gets hurt & they have the "Old Lion"/"Young Lion" match 4 the ages that'll either surprisingly/not-surprisingly (depends on ur view) be a MOTY candidate 4 BOTH PWI &/or WRESTLING ROUNDTABLE's 2011 YEAR IN REVIEW ...imho,of course...

Probably still to this day, the most shocking heel turn in sports entertainment and one has to remember something too, this was 1996. There were no where near the amount of internet pro wrestling dirt sheets that there is now in 2010. And everyone didn't have access to the internet like one sees now. There were no Zune HD's iPod Touches, iPhones, Blackberrys, and Android Phones where people could hear about possible heel turns, plus at this point Hogan had been a hero for 12 years.
id LOVE 2 see...if morrison EVER goes 2 either tna &/or roh...them build-up a morrison-v-hardy-v-rvd-v-kaz-v-aj king of the mountain/ultimate x 4 the tna world-&/or x title(s)...&/or maybe morrison-v-tyler black 4 the roh title...that/those would be VERY AWESOME...if done well,of course...
This wasn't exactly a buildup, but I don't think we ever got a payoff to the brief Lesnar/Benoit feud in late '03 on Smackdown. The feud they had was being built up, then they had one match on SD and the feud was then cut off when Benoit won the Rumble and was drafted to Raw
@johnnyrainbow50 Goldberg vs Lesnar went down as one of the shittiest matches of all time (and the almost official worst in Wrestlemania history) which is made all the more painful cause the the build up was INFINITELY better in every way. I only got 2 PPV's to see live and one of them was Wrestlemania XX and I remember that was the match I wanted to see the most XD hindsight 20/20 (heh, an accidental pun)
My fav build up= Austin vs Rock at WrestleMania 17.
Worst Build Up= Bret Hart arrival to WCW... it should have been better: Triple Threat-- Hogan vs Sting vs Bret at Starrcade, with Bret winning the title on a Sharpshooter to Hogan?? Maybe WCW would have had a couple of more years on the air if that would have happened.
Although it's a bit obscure, one of my favorite video packages to build up a match would have to be for Raven's first title shot at Jarrett back in 2003. It progressively built up until the very end with increasingly dramatic music and faster cuts until it would end with " X Weeks Away", "Next Wednesday" and finally "Tonight!" I couldn't wait to see that match.
Too bad Raven didn't win the belt for another couple years...
there hasnt been a big blow off feud in yrs.the closest thing wud be jericho-michaels last yr,which had a lot of drama behind it,but even that doesnt come close to lets stay sting against nwo or hogan vs rock.sad really, with the talent they have, you wud think they can have great buildup after buildup.
I loved the build up for Tripple H vs. Cactus Jack at the Royal Rumble 2000.. and the promo's were fantastic just hearing Mick talking about how he's wrestled on tacs and barbed wire.. It was great!
the worst build up was probably mark henry and batista...they kept on getting injured...than when it fianlly happend..a year after...they had the match.FOR FREE ON SMACKDOWN!!! WTF lol
i still NEVER got the melina involvement w/ flair-v-foley...maybe 2 exploit micks itty-bitty admitted crush on her...&/or that rics a horny old man w/ a latina fetish!?!?!?
Aye, Lesnar vs Goldberg match had so much potential, that it should be more impactfull than an atomic drop. Both of them were so powerfull (lifting, throwing and manhandling Big Show) and at the same time they were very agile and skilled, a shame that it turned into pile of crap with 15 minutes of staring on each other.
i think that lately... on fnsd... theyre building-up BOTH 'taker/y2jerk-off...&/or 'taker/mcmahon (AGAIN)...4 'mania...&/or the rumble...w/ vkm bullying long & scott armstrong in2 siding w/ him & cm punk...u know either long &/or scott armstrong ratting-vince-out E-F'N'-VENTUALLY!!!!!!
one of my personal favorite build ups was the WM 6 collision between hogan and Ultimate warrior. Two Great fan favorites with respect for eachother in one huge match at a great wrestlemainia... the fans were happy with any outcome becouse both of these guys were great... it was a win win situation for the WWF
when i was younger i was pumped for Macho Man vs Ric Flair from WM 8.. Flair saying Liz was with him before how he had "Photos" haha made me wonder lolol. Also Warrior and Undertaker from 1991. Warrior being traped in the coffin then Jake the snake guiding him to the dark side only to turn on him. It had me going . My fav would be Bret and Owen for WM 10. Undertake vs Kane at wm 20 wasnt to bad either. the hype was there atleast
ecw tommy dreamer and the sandman .when dreamer's cane knocks the ciagrette out of sandmans hand and goes into his eye and blinds him...stunning visual and it played into human fears and then revealing he was not so bad and canning dreamer a month later
Didn't HBK tag with god one match, shame he didn't throw HBK through the barber shop window. God turning heel, it would have been bigger than Hogans turn heh.
I guess his finish would be condemning people to hell. Reversal = repenting. Man I better knock this on the head before some religious fanatics read this and come after me making it look like murder suicide. There's a "HE" gag in there but I'll let it be lol
Ok I have a question for you guys at the roundtable. Why do you not like Invasion? Invasion's buildups were great. I love the build to angle vs Austin at Unforgiven and the triple threat at No Mercy were awesome. And the build for the 5-5 match at invasion was unbelievable awesome.
austin vs angle was more about the wwf then the invasion.. eventho it was sorta billed like that (with austin being the so called leader of the alliance)
@TheWrestlingLantern lol i was talking about that yestarday people hate on tna for dumb storyline thats one of the worst things ive ever ever ever seen
I don't know it is hard to say the best and worst, since it is all so "cookie cutter" now, they have guys cut promos on each other for 4 weeks and then a match at the PPV. Yeah too bad they didn't do more with DDP, but he was painted in WCW colors with bright shiny teeth and yes Kimberly beat the pants off of Sara in a hottness contest, Kim was the boobie pop out girl in 40yr Virgin after all!
if you're talking just about buildup, how about undertaker vs undertaker from summerslam 1994? the match sucked so bad though, that its hard to make a case.
Best build up ever...Sting -vs- Hogan back in the nWo days. Sting didn't wrestle for a year...hell he didn't even talk for a year and we all watched every week.
An underrated buildup was Ultimate Warrior vs Ravishing Rick Rude, for the heavyweight title, including Rude working out, and appearing on the Arsenio Hall Show, youtube Rude Arsenio...
bret vs owen especially their sumerslam 94 match had good build up...sting vs flair GAB '90, rock vs hhh backlash 2000, shawn michaels bs hhh summerslam 2002 was good if only out of curiosity to see if shawn could still hang.
the worst build up was just recent, randy orton and HHH for wrestlemania 25, god awful, it's the reason why i don't watch much wrestling anymore, here's why, it made the mcmahons baby faces (NEVER HAPPENS), HHH invades a home (<:0?), and the match at wrestlemania sucked, case and point why today wrestling sux
Being a huge taker fan, the build up of Mankind vs taker summerslam 96 was my favorite. I loved how it seemed that finally taker has an enemy that actually has his number but only because he was a maniacal pain loving lunatic. I was very interested in how anyone could beat the deadman that almost destroyed Hulkamania.
Flair vs nWo was a great build-up. It almost went a year before because Bischoff had suspended Flair. Then things are settled and Flair comes back. There is the Horsemen reunion in Greensville with an emotional returnn. Bischoff comes up and there's real heat. So then there's a Flair-Erik feud that starts but then into a Horsemen-nWo feud and finally a Flair-Hogan feud. The whole feud is the nWo torturing Flair, basically. Good pay off though, with Flair winning the title and a double turn.
As a person that has worked with snakes before, I still dont know how they had the cobra bite Savage. and The Mega Powers Explode SNME scene, was some of the best acting that Hogan and Savage did better than any crappy movies they made LOL I wish I can find it on Youtube
One of the best build ups to me was the end of Wrestlemania X when Owen Hart stared at the ring as his brother celebrated and he had this great psycho look on his face of "What about me?" Even though they wrestled already, you wanted to see if Owen could step his game up even more and take the WWF title from Bret. His cage promo from superstars was great too. Taz vs Sabu is sadly a reminder of what is lost in modern wrestling. A long buildup and big pay off. Not a 2 month storyline and blowoff.
You know a feud that had great buildup but a terrible match was obviously triple h/orton at wrestlemania 25. One of my favorites that people won't mention was the New Breed/Originals feud going into WM23. Michaels/Cena that year with the two of them being faces had excellent buildup as well.
Did you actually watch the match at Backlash? Goldberg crushed The Rock after 3 spears and a jackhammer slam! He went on to destroy the mid-card roster and even gained pin falls over main event superstars including Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and held the World Heavyweight Championship for three solid months. My only real complaint about Goldberg is his match against Brock Lesnar at WM XX, the crowd murdered that match and despite Goldberg's win, it did suck.
yes he would have u guy. wrestlilng is fake and scripted.Whether or not edge attacked cena RVD would have become champ unless the writers and board decided otherwise
Goldberg being physically dominated by Scott Steiner and passing out, getting pinned by Bret Hart after spearing Hart's armour, getting his ass handed to him by Hart, Jeff Jarrett, and the NWO, being too stupid to remember where the arena is located, getting tazored by Scott Hall, being mercilessly and completely beaten down by the NWO during the Fingerpoke of Doom storyline, and jobbing to Booker T makes Goldberg lose credibility after being attacked by The Rock and given a wig by Goldust?
what about dusty rhodes coming back 2 help his son dustin and he went looking for the nasty boys in a bar 4 a wargmes build up. i know eric loved the kevin sullivan adding a new member 2 his dungeon of doom every week ,the alliance to end hulkamaina. rvd pinning triple h and stone cold at separate times and dropping the bong...i mean ball wit rvd.lol
LOL @ Katie Vick. That was the funniest thing ever! And I think the issue with this year's Orton/HHH feud is that it had a great, dramatic buildup and then a very anti climatic ending:/ Anything dealing w/ Goldberg in the WWE sucked. Period. He got burried. I never liked Goldberg but even I can admit he got owned.
Well, to be fair, this is about build-ups to a specific match, not necessarily feuds. Though, there was that build-up to the first Austin-McMahon match on Raw is War back in 98. But I think these guys are referring to PPVs, at least, that's what I gathered from it. Though, I agree in that I enjoyed both of the storylines you mentioned.
Steamboat and Savage not only had an all-time classic match at WM 3, but they also had one of the best build-ups of all time....Randy attacking Steamboat with the bell horrified me as a kid...I thought Steamboat would never come back....and when Ricky returned several months later, i knew he was gonna kill Savage!
@wresmetnew Yes, but it did have a pay off in terms of that was the story-line that really put Kurt Angle over so the fans would believe him becoming the WWE Champion.
rock v austin wm 17 was great, the biggest wrestling stars of all time, great build up great story and u didnt really know who was going to win, also bret hart v austin wm 13 the build up and match was brilliant again u didnt really know who was going to win.for the worst build up goldberg v hhh. steiner v hhh.
Great show guys and a good topic best build up probably been said before Razor Ramon vs Goldust you think Scott Hall would kill Goldust another I'm sure been said Sting vs Hogan what made it better was the fact people thought Sting was going to the nWo with a fake Sting which but Sting didn't wrestle or even speak which I think made that a better feud. Pillman vs Austin another had great build up too bad by that time Pillman was too injuried.
Kane vs. Taker at Wrestlemania 14 was a good build up. With the whole "I'll never fight my brother" bit. And then teasing that Kane and Taker were united.
Anything involving training (i.e Rock/Lesnar & HBK/Bret Hart WM Iron Man match) are my favorites. HHH fucking Katie Vick was HILARIOUS 2 me. Especially later in the night when Lawler compared necrophilia with Hulkamania!!! I was ROTFLMAO!!!! The rest of the build-up was horrible but I loved that particular RAW.
my volume must suck cuz iv turned this right up full and can barely hear you guys. NWO buildup 1996 was my favourite. austin vs rock for backlash 1999 was excellent as well, better than for WMXV, with the whole smoking skull belt thing
Ok, I know it comes across that I'm an HBK mark, but i gotta say.
HBK V Bret Hart SS97 (Montreal Screwjob). That build up was awesome. It was 18months in the making, and then through in the "Shoot" Videos with Bret callin' Shawn a chickenshit, and a phony.
now a great build up was for rock/austin 2 for WM 17 the promos and then add in the theme by limp bizkit(my way) and it came off great another great build up was sting vs hogan. i still remember when j.j. dillion just asking sting what he wants and sting just pointed his bat at the fan's sign that said sting wants hogan. it was great granted the match didn't live up to the build up
now a bad build up is actually for the original ecw one night stand ppv. granted the ppv was great it got like 3 damn segments. just that alone showed how much vince really gave a damn about that ppv. if vince would get his head out his ass and as he says "do what's best for the fans" he would put his ego aside for certain things and this would've been one of them
I have to say one of the worst build ups was Batista vs. John Cena. Two of the biggest faces in the business today and they didn't even give us any time to get excited about it. I think the build up to their match was what, three weeks or something? For something so epic, they should if stretched it out for a while to build some tension and made it something more memorable.
A good one for me was the build up to the HBK-Hogan feud. I was getting tired of Hogan, HBK, and whoever else Hogan would tag with doing a pose down after every match. So, when HBK Superkicked Hogan I was shocked. The HBK impression of Hogan on Larry King Live was great. Also, when HBK was in Montreal playing Brett's music and coming out to it and playing a fast one on the crowd was genius.
For a bad build-up... Matt Hardy/Lita/Edge feud. that shit was terrible. it's kind of ironic and sad where they use the affair as an excuse to bring back Matt Hardy, when there could have been a better way to bring him back.
I actually liked the build up to that feud. It actually made the feud seem like it was a shoot to me. The only bad thing about the feud was their match at SummerSlam that ended because Matt lost too much blood.
they mentioned the batista turn and what i like about that was after every match at the end 0f 04 and 05 leading up to WM, batista would hold HHH's arm up holding the title and then stare at it and then have mini stare off with hhh so it was like he was starting to get that feeling he wanted the title
i liked raven brainwashing the sandmans son & wife, the raw after the royal rumble 2004 when benoit showed up to challenge for the big gold belt & macho man revealed kimberly was ddps wife.i hated hogan no selling the powerbomb from vader, vickie loving big show =X & if it counts rosie vs trump xD
Lol, no more reminders of Katie Vick..you hit bullseye when you talk of the highs and lows of HHH/Orton and Rock/Goldberg. the breaking&entering was lame & predictable. the recap of the feud since 04 on Raw was ok tho. Goldberg's 1st appearance on Raw & spearing Rock still gets a pop from me. WWE cant pay to get a reaction like that today..Batista/HHH is even better if you notice that they really havent built any elite stars since Cena & Batista. others since have not made it past "really good"
does anyone remember the Steve Blackman - Val Venis fued where Venis replaced Blackman's bag of weapons with a big of vibrators? Absoulely terrible. I also remember the "Mysterious Benefactor" angle in WWF that Bischoff attempted to ruin on Nitro the same night of the revealing.
Best buildup for me had to be the debut of Kane - from Paul Bearer saying he knew a terrible secret to the Undertaker reluctantly obeying him right through to the HITC match vs HBK when Kane debuted and cost Taker the match - all of that built up to the match at WM14 which was ace!
Worst buildup was probably when Biss Boss Man stole Big Show's father, in a coffin, during his funeral...and Big Show body-boarded the coffin right out of the funeral...epic fail..!
I know it wasn't the last match of the night(or matches I guess counting Raven/Funk as separate), but I think it was promoted as s double main event - might be wrong - but either way it was on the poster, heh, so much like Rock/Hogan at WM18 I consider that the real main event even if technically I'm wrong. Point being it was the focused match of the show
Good ones, Hogan versus Warrior in WWE. Do I even have to mention why? It's Captain America versus The Hulk (irony, I know.) Andre versus Hogan WM III. Bret Hart, Steve Austin how Austin would just taunt Bret. Goldberg's just character build up in WCW until he finally won the WCW Title. Same thing with Steve Austin in WWE in late 97 until he finally won the WWE Title in '98.
Nice Jay Briscoe, he seems like a cool guy. Worst build-ups, anything involving the mcmahon's. I think the build-up for jericho vs shawn michaels was pretty good, but you probably hated it. What about the build-up for andre and hulk. Kane and HHH, lol katie vick, that was hilarious. Oh wait triple h has had pretty much bad build-up to do any rivalry he's had. What about captain america? lol what a crappy build-up oh wait it can't be hogan. wow daizee haze, the show is becoming more legitamate.
best buildups...Bret and Austin, SS. Hogan and Giant, WM3. Teker and Kane, first match. Austin/Michaels with Tyson at WM, Matt Hardy and Edge after Matt's return after Lita/Edge whore thing...These are some.
I just wanted to add something to the Austin/Scott Hall thing. WWE really did think we were stupid because the next week on RAW, a week after they smashed his LEFt knee with the cinderblock, he comes out to wrestle walking like he usually does and his RIGHT KNEE was all wrapped up in some cast. Great job at continuity, WWE.
bret challenged austin in 96. not the other way around. bret want to face the best wrestler in the wwf(not hbk who was champ). in say this, he elevated austin and dissed hbk at the same time. but that build up was simply insane.
"Add an S to hitman and you know how feel about him!"
It definitely was not the other way around, I remember a RAW being hyped as Bret via satellite responds to Austin's challenges before he actually returned to TV on a RAW and said he was staying with the WWF & will fight Austin at Survivor Series. Austin challenging Bret was the whole idea! heh Though he definitely did do the "elevate Austin, diss HBK" stuff, heh ;)
I'm a subscriber, watching wrestling for over 20 years, have some ideas I'd like to share with yall. My AIM is xerotrek328, hopefully one of u will IM me cause I'd rather not post ideas where anyone can take em, I'd prefer YOU guys use them.

Eddie and Rey from 2005 just gave me such a headache for so many reasons. I don't even want to go into it.
Al Wilson/Torrie Wilson/Dawn Marie feud was terrible and didn't really go anywhere besides down the toilet.
I liked HHH and Cactus Jack from the 2000 Royal Rumble.
And the HHH and Scott Steiner for the 03 Royal Rumble was not only a lame buildup but it was also the old Triple H monster heel routine.
SuperRichardNixon 9 months ago
Agreed with the Eddie-Rey buildup, but at least their matches ended up being very good.

Gustavo11pr 2 years ago
Didn't Bret have a no compete clause for a certain amount of days
Besides Hogan vs Sting had been built for a year

Aye, Lesnar vs Goldberg match had so much potential, that it should be more impactfull than an atomic drop. Both of them were so powerfull (lifting, throwing and manhandling Big Show) and at the same time they were very agile and skilled, a shame that it turned into pile of crap with 15 minutes of staring on each other.

one of my personal favorite build ups was the WM 6 collision between hogan and Ultimate warrior. Two Great fan favorites with respect for eachother in one huge match at a great wrestlemainia... the fans were happy with any outcome becouse both of these guys were great... it was a win win situation for the WWF
lakeviewman6 2 years ago
when i was younger i was pumped for Macho Man vs Ric Flair from WM 8..

GWRevolution2008 2 years ago
One of the best build ups to me was the end of Wrestlemania X when Owen Hart stared at the ring as his brother celebrated and he had this great psycho look on his face of "What about me?" Even though they wrestled already, you wanted to see if Owen could step his game up even more and take the WWF title from Bret. His cage promo from superstars was great too. Taz vs Sabu is sadly a reminder of what is lost in modern wrestling. A long buildup and big pay off. Not a 2 month storyline and blowoff.
songoku350 2 years ago 2
You know a feud that had great buildup but a terrible match was obviously triple h/orton at wrestlemania 25. One of my favorites that people won't mention was the New Breed/Originals feud going into WM23. Michaels/Cena that year with the two of them being faces had excellent buildup as well.
Cobytiger 2 years ago
Did you actually watch the match at Backlash? Goldberg crushed The Rock after 3 spears and a jackhammer slam! He went on to destroy the mid-card roster and even gained pin falls over main event superstars including Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and held the World Heavyweight Championship for three solid months. My only real complaint about Goldberg is his match against Brock Lesnar at WM XX, the crowd murdered that match and despite Goldberg's win, it did suck.
Zepp900 2 years ago
Three months is solid to you? I wonder what you call Cena's year long reign then? Godly?
KurtdScared 2 years ago
Godly? No, I call it unnecessarily long.

LOL @ Katie Vick. That was the funniest thing ever! And I think the issue with this year's Orton/HHH feud is that it had a great, dramatic buildup and then a very anti climatic ending:/ Anything dealing w/ Goldberg in the WWE sucked. Period. He got burried. I never liked Goldberg but even I can admit he got owned.

Pillman vs Austin another had great build up too bad by that time Pillman was too injuried.

now a great build up was for rock/austin 2 for WM 17 the promos and then add in the theme by limp bizkit(my way) and it came off great another great build up was sting vs hogan. i still remember when j.j. dillion just asking sting what he wants and sting just pointed his bat at the fan's sign that said sting wants hogan. it was great granted the match didn't live up to the build up
SSGOKU44 2 years ago
now a bad build up is actually for the original ecw one night stand ppv. granted the ppv was great it got like 3 damn segments. just that alone showed how much vince really gave a damn about that ppv. if vince would get his head out his ass and as he says "do what's best for the fans" he would put his ego aside for certain things and this would've been one of them
SSGOKU44 2 years ago
I have to say one of the worst build ups was Batista vs. John Cena. Two of the biggest faces in the business today and they didn't even give us any time to get excited about it. I think the build up to their match was what, three weeks or something? For something so epic, they should if stretched it out for a while to build some tension and made it something more memorable.
dashkatae 2 years ago 3
A good one for me was the build up to the HBK-Hogan feud. I was getting tired of Hogan, HBK, and whoever else Hogan would tag with doing a pose down after every match. So, when HBK Superkicked Hogan I was shocked. The HBK impression of Hogan on Larry King Live was great. Also, when HBK was in Montreal playing Brett's music and coming out to it and playing a fast one on the crowd was genius.
