  • haha the man performing nonsense is so weird!

  • I'm jealous of this man. I wish I could pay my bills by goofing around with silly stuff nobody needs.

  • @MomoTheBellyDancer Welcome to planet earth, where most of the jobs are completely irrelevant to our survival.

  • That staring robot at the end is so cute, I want one :D

  • 6:45 and on...that man is my new hero :D

  • Oooh! I want that last robot as a robot pet!!! Who wouldn't love a 1 eye snake that just goes: "huh!?" and stares at you like if you did something wrong. lol

  • Interesting form of art! And funny too!

  • i wanna see jack black do the poem thing

  • shut up

  • Pretty hilarious.

  • Heck, there isn't an art category for Youtube eitiher (which I find annoying because I upload a lot of videos about the arts).

  • Me too

  • hahaha

  • I just have a bad feeling about people, who call themselves artists... "I am an artist"... always reminds me of wannabe aritists who have nothing to express.

On the other hand I beleive, that almost every engineer is an artist in some way.

But I don't see what this guy has to express... And for me that is something art is: expressing something in a "differnet way"...

But life is not just black and white... :)

  • i'm of the camp that thinks art is simply what people make of it, so i think if it's viewed as some evasive mystic thing, then it will sound pretentious when someone declares himself an artist. i don't think it's mystic. i think it's good or bad, and to say you're an artist is just a way to describe what you do. in terms of what Levin expresses, I see it as a curiosity about the world and about ourselves.

  • I'm of no camp :)

I just think that there is a line ( it can be a subject ti debate where it is) between engineering and art... In my opinion this guy is on the engineer side :)

  • it's also yellow and brown

  • does anyone know if he uses Max or what>/?

  • I hope this guy is on our side...

  • jajaja, thats what I was thinking too

  • 6:47+ Where can I watch the other twenty eight minutes? Never mind, instead I'll watch: "The emporer has no clothes."

  • I LOVE IT!

  • the guy is clearly an engineer,...

kind of stupid calling himself an artist...

he creates some instruments...does not express anything

  • since when is art associated with cheesy emotionalism?

  • since forever

  • IDEAS!?

  • does he use max or what?

  • Probably Max/Jitter. Maybe PD.

  • I think it's interesting that the curvature at 4:20 - the one that looks like a flower - is associated with the letters B, L and M.

Cos in my native language, flower is called "Blume". It's teh perfect word for it!

  • Fantastic ideas. I would love to have that "Double Taking " Eye at my front door. Would be great to add an assortment of monosyllabic sound effects to it, like "uhhhhhh? ".

  • i'd love to project that eye recording thing on somebody's wall

  • Its literally verbal diarrhea at 5:30

  • thanks TED

  • Agh, that robotic eye is all kinds of creepy.

This sort of thing would be great for iPhone apps.

  • Interesting, but this didn't blow me away.

  • acts and looks a little like tony stark

  • "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

    -Pablo Picasso.

  • Solution: embrace children's desire explore and discover and don't set limits on their experiments. Exploration and discovery are the gateways to an artistic mind.

  • As long as we don't forget to augment such limitless experimentation with skills, methods, and thorough education of history.

Ignorance of and hostility towards art tends to stem from a lack of education rather than an abundance of it.

  • Funny. I find that postmodern Fine Artists are some of the most hostile people I meet. =)

  • (I'm afraid that wasn't terribly charitable of me. As a designer, I tend to be on the receiving end of a lot of prejudice from Fine Artists.)

  • Perfectly understandable. Being school for a long time doesn't necessarily mean that one has had an education.

If there's one thing that Post Modern artists can all agree upon, its that we can't agree upon anything. Its given me my fair share of frustration as well.

  • fuggin' awsome!!! I want a double-take robot that will observe me!!

  • Where can I buy one of those eye boxes!?

  • Wonderful.

  • man i freaking love science

  • The taker of doubles is adorable :)

  • So sound and shape are related in language? English or all languages? I would like to see the research on that.

  • pause at 6:31 and count how much black people you see

i counted 2 and how come there aren't there more than i expected

  • there were more but they all came late ;)

  • I always quit listening whenever someone says "empowered".

  • go to a doctor then

  • you're probably not the sort we'd like to empower anyway, with that attitude

  • The big eye was a big finish :o)

I found he killed a little bit of applause by setting up the wrong expectation in the audience. For instance, the 30 minutes of nonsense was probably assumed to be English non-sequitur. Nobody could relate to the achievement since they can't relate to the sounds, and thus can't weigh what they know against what the software produced. Again with the eye tracking, he made it sound like we were going to see something else and the eyes were the quick intro to it.

  • Well the whole point of the nonsense talk was that it really was nonsense. No one would be familiar with its sounds. Altho I noticed the subtitles used the german alphabet.

  • OMG!! All this is amazing!!! Big time thumbs up!!!

  • I want his program and some acid :: drool ::

  • very original !!!

  • Robots w/ GUNZ

  • Amazing mind.

  • this reminded me of some Ken Perlin stuff

  • i want one :P

  • it would be easy to program reactions by the art to the observer based on the observers opinion given by the eyes or words regarding the art piece.

    "this painting is shit"

    "excuse me?" ha ha,

  • Yea, when that Jaap guy is doing his thing, there are several times where the jibberish appears on screen before he says any of it. Not exactly real-time recognition. More like a well rehearsed sham.

And the rest isn't all that impressive considering my webcam is near enough in technology to replicate the tracking features demonstrated in this video.

  • Spanish subtitles pleaseeeeeeeee!!!! It's so interesant !

  • NEW FAVORITE ARTIST!

  • hmm, some weird word-salad and a KI... ^^

  • I'd be interested in seeing some controlled experiments performed with these machines. Are people less likely to steal in their presence? More likely to tell the truth? Easier to intimidate?

  • That's a GREAT idea! If I were you I'd approach him about that study.

  • I take it you're referring to that 'snout' device. I don't think you can use technology like that to intimidate or reduce stealing. The result you'll get with stuff like this is exactly what you see here. People will more than likely just stand around and be goofy with the contraption. Interactivity does that. Its fascinating how interactive technology does that. Put people in the presence of something like that and it will automatically illicit a playful response!

  • The lack of an art category doesn't mean that the iPhone store is lacking art programs it's the failure of hard defined categories. If the apps were arranged by tags then the "art" tag would certainly be front and center.

    Tag clouds rule, hierarchies drool.

  • How do you spell the name of the sonata? I'd be interested in hearing more.

  • I am fully prepared for (-) feedback.

The mosre i view TED the less entertaining is the 'entertainment'. It seems that the concept of what is art is constantly being pushed beyond outre into the realm of wasteful rape of limited mind-space.

It is true that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', but is it possible that the beauty becomes more beautiful when many see this beauty?

    So

    Much

    Noise

    So

    Little

    Talent

  • It does seem that the previous TED talks were much more enlightening. But did you expect them all to be excellent?

By my count there are only 8 - 10 really great TED talks.

  • i share your idea ... nothing really special. g.levin is just a person doing anything and gaining maximum reputation. his 'art' represents too obvious things.

seen the idea of observing machines at least 15years ago.

  • hm, minus 2 thumbs... there must be a network doing this...

  • I agree with you entirely; egalitarinasm has absolutely no place in art.

If it is true to say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is at east equally true to say that comprehension (or want of it) is in the brain of the beholder.

Unapologetic elitism is a good thing.

  • * at least

  • that was pretty cool...

  • This was fun :))

  • XD I want to meet the double taker, that thing looks amazing.

  • great concepts here but very shallow incorporation and execution.

  • hope you can show us sometime how good is your work, worth TED's time?

  • I did not bash the work I think its a great start but at the same time its just a start there is no next step or polish when it comes to this stuff anyone can take pictures of eyes or make shapes make noise these things are not new. It would have been interesting to see something truly more amazing then subtitles in real time or an eye that can blink with you. But that is just my opinion. As well I am not contesting to be on TED talks where as this guy had to of at some point to be there.

  • So although my art work might not be amazing I am also not striving to be on ted talks.

  • Totally agree.

And by the way, in my humble opinion, it was neither art nor science. Anyone who claims otherwise, hasn't actually experienced art nor science.

  • That is fucking amazing.

  • I feel the same Paul, too bad they mix it up with Gordon Brown, Al Gore, Michael Shermer and such..

  • What's wrong with Shermer, may I ask?

  • the speech part reminds me of the caterpillar in alice in wonderland... very entertaining!

  • It is SO WONDERFUL to log onto my youtube account and find something that leaves me informed, surprised, enriched and nourished. Thank you, TEDtalks, for offering users an alternative to endless eyeshadow tutorials and kittens falling off of skateboards.

  • @paulmercy get fucked

  • The visible spoken language is a phenomenon that will introduce "telepathic" ability. It isn't about hearing my thoughts, but "seeing" what I mean. Technology and art would be the first to actualize this dream.

  • 12:30 having that in a public bathroom is soo creepy!

  • Wholey Crap! That eye art is really freaky!

  • Brilliant!

  • LOLEYES

  • I WANT ONE!!

  • I have seen sounds but that was drug induced

  • That poem was written by the same person who mounted a urinal on a wall and called it art.

  • Dadaism

  • No, Dadaism was the movement. The person was Marcel Duchamp. Really weird dude.

  • There's a company called Monster Media that does window and wall ads based on somewhat similar techniques. (google their name, yt anti link crap prevents link to their page)

  • I love this kind of stuff. I hope we'll see more body-electronics interaction in the future, à la DDR.

  • Art and science come together to fuck with humans.

  • Wow!

  • The "snout" was quite amusing.

  • wokachica wokachica wokachica wokachica

  • Wow... so interesting! I like this kind of stuff... :D

  • lmao

  • I loved last one!

  • What about demoscene?

  • That's cool

  • interesting! :)

  • Anyone have a link to the Ur Sonata being performed in the video?

  • do you know the implications of being first to comment on a video?

it means I have just become a man, an iconic symbol which represent the most pathetic of the losers who attempt to defeat their petty insecurities, not by arguing, insulting, or bragging, but by proclaiming how I waste all day on the internet waiting for a new link to pop up so that I can claim its virginity

(if the whole 'first' phenomena doesn't give you an idea of the mindless competition in our society, idk what will)

  • just saying...

  • If only all the other "first" could learn from you :)

  • yeah, to some people it's like being the first man on the moon or as you said "the first to claim it's virginity", i agree

  • I think perhaps for many 'firsters' it's just a joke that they know pisses some people off. Most of us casual viewers have no feelings about firsters one way or the other. But for those who are annoyed by someone typing 'first', they give a reason for firsters to keep typing 'first'.

  • Yeah, I agree.

The people who it truly unnerves and bothers are the propagators of the mindless competition. They are relatively content, but as soon as someone else shows off something and rubs it in their face ("first"), they instantly feel jealousy and resentment. They are the one living in mindless competition, they will be fine but as soon as they see someone else has something they don't have, they begin to harbor anger and envy, until they can rub something in others faces, too.

  • Competition without challenge is meaningless. Firsters are an interesting, but meaningless phenomenon that I will tell my grandkids about

  • Competition without a self-reliant goal is meaningless.

If you want to compete to get something for yourself, that's great.

If you want to compete to get something so others think of you differently, then you are weak.

  • I agree, it seems somewhat shallow to compete for glory alone, but social acceptance is a big part of who we are. The is an innate drive to have someone on top. If theres an opening people try to fill the Alpha-gap.

Finding happiness in the modern world requires these things to be set aside. Especially on the internet, insulting people, or trying to express dominance is so meaningless.

We should co-author a book called "firsting"

  • I <3 firsters, and envy their skill/luck/excess of time.

  • although I'm not a firster myself, due to lack of traits previously mentioned.

  • very interesting

  • Fascinating!
