I really like how the people in the videos just tell us what the books are about and not preach or force it upon us. oh and the "We're quite happy with the beast." at 11:30 was hilarious.
Revelation is predicting the fall of the Roman Empire so John had to write it "in code". If it were written plainly, and any Roman found the letter, everyone associated with it would be killed for conspiring to overthrow Rome. To Romans in 95 AD, when it was most likely written, Christians were Jews. Rome still had fresh memories of the Great Jewish Revolt just 30 years earlier. Rome knew that the Jews were serious.
The book of Revelation also has relevance to modern politics. George W Bush tried to get France to help with the invasion of Iraq by claiming that he was called by God to battle Gog and Magog and bring about the apocalypse to begin a New Age. The news story was just too crazy and didn't get much attention, but it most certainly happened. Just google 'chirac bush gog magog' and you'll find many news stories about it.
@Denver1928 That is a little misleading since the oldest existing manuscripts only date to the 4th or 5th century. In the 2nd century Irenaeus wrote that 666 is the correct number, not 616.
(666)Six wasn't always bad. ...And they say that the embryo is perfected exactly in the sixth month, that is, in one hundred and eighty days in addition to the two and a half, as Polybus the physician relates in his book On the Eighth Month, and Aristotle the philosopher in his book On Nature. Hence the Pythagoreans, as I think, reckon six the perfect number, from the creation of the world, according to the prophet... Clement of Alexandria, The Stromata, or Miscellanies, Book VI CHAPTER XVI
Behind him is a cross roads junction between routs 65 and 66. Its called Megido Junction one could call it a "hight of imperfection" in the Jewish tradition because of trafic congestion every morning and evening. The Massiah will arrive before the junction is improved.
That green hill is actually what is called a "TEL" which translates to "mound". These TEL are mounds of remains built up over hundreds of years by new settlements being built in older ones on the same site. Har Megido itself is near by.
There will be destruction and ruin if academics think they should stand in growing pasture to speak. Clearly a townie... pity, otherwise instructive video..
What about the theory that the book was inspired by the ingestion of magic mushrooms? They grow in abundance on the isle of Patmos where the book was written. And people who know say that Revelation sounds similar to being on mushrooms. You can interpret it to mean anything you like, but the likelihood is that it doesn't mean anything.
Revelation continues the Jewish tradition of writing archetypes (creature composites) that is fascinating such as the 4-face creature that is the living creatures of Earth; many people misunderstand it and fulfill the prophecy of Christ that they are unbelievers, therefore do not make a true judgment and only judge surface appearances (childish appearances). We are not reading mythology, we are reading the chosen language to describe our troubles, a fulfillment of the rest of the Bible.
oh the beast really did a wonderfull job creating the motor car, it kills 1 million people every year worldwide, and all the wars which are created from the so called fuel crisis, and you praise the beast with four wheels which got you to your destination, the blind still lead the blind.
@anthonythirteen Both numbers are given in early manuscripts of Revelation. It is notable that 616 corresponds to the Greek rendering of Nero Caesar (rather than the Hebrew rendering which adds up to 666).
@anthonythirteen Most likely the 616 was actually the scribal error since it was found in the minority. It's just come under the microscope again these days for no good reason.
@Denver1928 No, recent research at Oxford University of the earliest versions has found it to be 616. Just because a lot of later versions had 666, this doesn't make it correct. 666 looks better than 616.
@2camjohn I see this comes via Wikipedia. Tracking down the sources they do not go back before the late third century, which is not early, and can hardly be preferred to Irenaeus comments (about 100 years earlier) in this case. Just another case of the popular press running after a 'science and the bible' story.
@SeiferOptics Cheers, you're just the sort of person these videos are for.... We've done all the books of the Bible now but have some plans for more, so stay tuned.
@SeiferOptics I always get the impression that Revelation is the book of the Bible that even atheists enjoy. A rip-snorting tale of intrigue, demons, secret codes, all topped off with a big battle.
The story of Moses is good, but Hollywood missed a trick not doing Revelation. We have the CGI for it now too.
@entoris476 I don't know yet... There's plenty more I'd like to do but will have a chat with the theology people... They might be sick of me by now! :)

Isn't the number of the beast 616? The 666 idea actually being a mistake by a transcriber?

@anthonythirteen And where has this been published? The apparatus in the Nestle-Aland lists nothing before the 4th century.
HConstantine 4 months ago
@Denver1928 The oldest known manuscripts say 616 .
It depends how you look at it, but from a religious point of view the older writings are surely more 'true'.
2camjohn 1 year ago 2
@2camjohn I don't know where you got that. its only in late mss. Irenaeus does mention it quite early, but he already points out its a mistake.
HConstantine 4 months ago
@HConstantine Same place as the guy above. Oxford University.
They figured it out by studying previously illegible manuscripts using advanced imaging techniques.
