@topperdepop hello, I was wondering the same thing really and I did a little research. cheftalk.com/t/10660/viennese-tortes
"Gerstner Torte"? I think if you follow this link you might get a little further. As I did figure that maybe Stephen would sample a dish a patisserie would maybe like to plug. "Geh-Schpair" / "Gairsht-nehr" torte?
Not so sure if it is the Café Gerstner in Vienna he's sitting in, but wikipedia could verify.
@xxxamydollxxx Those wars were about land and resources. If you lived in a big, rich nation--including colonies, there were more opportunities to escape poverty and to escape the terror of being in a weak country swallowed by a stronger one, which made it all about the next generations. That's also why people fled, legally and illigally, to richer nations, risking all. And why there were revolutions. Hope springs eternal for the downtrodden and dispossessed.
All those people at the tram station around him and they just didn't know what a genius was standing beside them. Why couldn't i have been standing there?? :-(
I love the kindness in his voice when he talks about wanting to speak to his great-great-grandfather. His compassion and love and humanity is boundless.
What an interesting history we have in the body of evidence in Fry's ancestors---that they were in "work houses" and jails (including as children), suggesting the vast and brutal public and social "disciplinary mechanisms" used to control the poor back then, up through the days of Dickens: plus epidemic diseases.
I love this but there's something fake about the series. They have obviously done the research before involving the celebrity in question. This is clear from how the producers reject some people on the grounds that the history in their genealogy is uninteresting or has already been covered by a previous edition:- they already know. They give the false impression that in this case Stephen Fry did all the research himself, with a camera crew following, within a week or two.
@queenastilon Yeah you're right, it seems a bit artificial in that sense. The whole time I was wondering "wait, he really went himself to the Vienna War Archives or TPRB just gave him the certificate about his grandfather"? Obviously it's the latter. But oh well it's still fascinating. And let's be honest some historical backgrounds are definitely more interesting (or more "exotic") than others for viewers.
@ikutsu2001 Austrians speak German. They do have a special accent, but he doesn't speak it. But his German is pretty good for a native English speaking person!
Does anyone know what the music played when he gets to Vienna is?

When he said 24th/23rd of September, I nearly died, because the 23rd is my birthday.
Had a bit of a Fryphile moment.

A good episode as they usually are, but there are a couple of sentences from the voiceover that could have been put across better.
"Stephen doesn't remember his grandmother, Rosa. She died before he was born".

I kind of agree on the slight "fakeness" but it's necessary to do all the research ahead of time, saves time and money.
